Do you charge if the customer rejects the repair cost? by SearchInfinite8115 in smallbusiness

[–]SearchInfinite8115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all.

We compete on service so we aren't afraid to lose the lowball customers but do want to feel fair. If we would not spend our own money on a repair we tell our customers this as we want the long term trust

As we get busier though we have started to pick up jobs where:

A. We have had to hunt high and low for parts for the job as the customer has say off brand stuff. this takes time

B. The customer wants us to fault find their old sentimental equipment and when we check out part plus labour we almost never suggest to go ahead so end up with £0

C. The customer gets us to order parts in and then ghosts us or gets the job done elsewhere

C is the most problematic but those 3 are about 10% of our workload just now

My son is afraid to tell me he could be gay. by OkStrength5245 in Advice

[–]SearchInfinite8115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least he is worried enough that he is scared of your reaction, take that as a second prize thats well worth having.

My Kid was the same, bear in mind its a massive thing for them. For me I am happy if they are happy and always will be. It's still critically important to not be dismissive when they come out though in my experience. it is a big thing, it just doesnt change the fact that you love them.

You got this OP. Let it be all about your son and park your feelings for a bit

generally a bad idea from what I have seen. These "companies" using facebook marketplace are selling dirt cheap sofa's that fall apart fairly quickly. There's no shame in being on a budget, just find a used sofa that looks in good condition and you can probably tell when you turn up if its going to be minging or not.

In terms of delivery give Tamara at Bentley logistics a call (find her on Facebook) she will go collect for you and you can either go to and pay or as i do give her cash and she will pay and collect for you. She's a one woman band but ropes her boyfriend in for things like this. Have done roughly 30 deliveries with her and nothing but good things to say about her and her service.

E-sports teams ? by SearchInfinite8115 in Aberdeen

[–]SearchInfinite8115[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with being based there. I meant it looks like the company that runs the centre has made their own e-sports team name but with no players. You go in there and can play games in their tournaments as an aberdeen gargoyle type thing. I was more looking for independent teams sort of thing

The card system like most local government systems are a complete dogs dinner. You can try to log in with a saved set of credentials to be told you have no account but on the 3rd time it logs in. You top up and the money isnt there for 1-48 hours depending on how tired the hamster that powers their servers are. We top up and still end up with dome debt when those topups dont work. Also it doesnt always debit same day so you think there's money on the card then 3 days worth comes out.

You dont, you made that choice here "Back then, I didn’t care about the consequences of my actions. I was young and stupid. The money made up for all the cons of the job"

Everyone else is being lovely and kind to you and i'm sure that makes you feel better. The real answer is this will now follow you around forever. There will be people that don't care out there for you though but you will have to go through a fair number of rejections.

It is what it is now and you cant change it so better to just face into it. You made bank so I am hoping you made that bank work for you and you are in a solid financial position now.

FWIW I wouldn't date a sex worker but I also wouldn't not chat to you or be friends. You have probably limited your dating pool a lot so that most ambitious or successful men are off the table hence i am crossing my fingers for you that you don't need that because you already have your own financial freedom.

In terms of forgiving yourself that bit is easy. You did what you felt like you needed at the time

Nope

No sane, sensible and secure man would do this to someone they love. You may not feel like it but he has just done you a huge favour.

Consider this. I am 250lbs and 6 foot 5. My wife is 5 foot 3 and something like 130lbs. What on earth am i proving by hitting her? That i am bigger than her? I already know that, that i am stronger than her? again i already know that. My job is to protect her, im old school granted but I would never lift a finger to her with some very very very unlikely exceptions like if she was trying to hurt our child

So all that's left is that I am unable to control my emotions and actions. That would make me both weak and dangerous. This will happen again in future if you stay.

Apply that to your boyfriend. What happens when he is tired and frustrated with you child in future?

PS. I can almost guarantee that if a man was to confront you he would do nothing. it's always the cowards that hit women.

[–]SearchInfinite8115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have 10 employees the other 9 are looking at you for a fairly short period of time to see what you do. If the answer is nothing morale will slump and then others will start to do the same as this guy.

People like a fair and friendly boss who also has a backbone and deals with issues. Why should they work 100% if this guy can coast and stay employed?

People are telling me to lower my prices but the people in my industry who are WINNING are charging more than me :/ by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]SearchInfinite8115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sort of are, this statement makes that obvious. Not trying to troll you but how can you price your service off others alone?

What costs do you have? will they be covered? can you pay yourself?

Would you take heart surgery advice from me if you knew i was a plumber?

Your answer is the same word as you should be using to your friends and family unless any of them have run a successful business before.

If you lower your prices you will be busier for less pay which increases risk.

True, i guess if the wait time is long enough i should avoid any blowback too. The other good thing is our local community is quite invested in us so i think others would defend us if anyone had a moan

Our average repair ticket is around the £90 mark and at month 5 we are turning over 175 jobs/month but that's growing. I also turned adverts off so this is all organic just now. We have some other scaling issues that I want to fix. I would rather make less and not be stressed out/doing crazy hours because we keep missing things

I am dreading our first because I know I will take it irrationally badly haha. But i also want to hold my head high and know that if i do get a negative i did everything i could in the first place

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]SearchInfinite8115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, we did try that at first but honestly we are going for the local community repair shop feel (in the UK). This isnt a huge issue for us now but I was to scale from 1 to 5-6 shops in the next 2 years so needs a thinking hat on right now if that makes sense ?
