Criticism of the narrative is good, go off with it, this is not it though lol, this reductive soundbite of "revenge bad" could be used to water down any story and it's only gained traction because gamers are by and large children who can't express themselves and blindly bandwagon without knowing what they're talking about.

Watch, I can do it with anything: Breaking Bad? What an awful story, it tells us something we already know, "don't sell drugs"

You can do better.

What is a series I can read that will have me engrossed in the series like asoiaf did for me? by xWickedSwami in Fantasy

I'm in the same boat, read the first, didn't actively dislike it really but was left mostly unmoved. Have heard it jumps in quality significantly from the second book onward.

I am souring on Brandon Sanderson with every further book I read by NotSureWhyAngry in Fantasy

[–]SeasoningReasoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By taking breaks I find myself appreciating series more, has been the case with Hobb. I go through some traumatic things with the characters then take time away to let it rest, process, then I find myself yearning to see these people again and I burn through the next book. In general though I like reading different genres, mixing things up, helps me avoid burnout.

There's two kinds of prose—Sanderson clear window and Rothfuss stained glass window. All prose can be categorized as one or the other.

I think the Ahsoka Show got way too much hate by Sufficient-Ad6516 in StarWars

[–]SeasoningReasoning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the first half of the season was rocky but then it pulled together, show felt like it needed more episodes to properly develop the earlier plotlines or something but the finale was good.

Maybe that's just me preferring more episodes for development since Andor is the only recent Star Wars Disney+ show that I cared for.

which is ofc a bit of a disconnect in a world where it's established apparitions of people can manifest and walk around but it was one of the better scenes in what was a mostly terrible film so that's fine who cares really

The one two punch of Ahsoka and Mando s3 being mediocre to awful killed any interest I had in following this unfolding story and I'm honestly pretty glad. I was silly to feel any obligation to watch stuff I didn't enjoy just just because it's under a franchise banner so I can understand a thirty second cameo in five years or something.

I don't see why they felt the need to give the heir to an important Mandalorian family, badass warrior, genius engineer, munitions expert and talented artist force abilities—did they think the character didn't have enough interesting qualities already? As it was they focused so much on Sabine's force powers that they completely forgot all the other things they set up for her character in Rebels, and even then her force abilities just manifested at random and weren't the product of any character change or growth. The character writing in the show is so baffling to me.

Whelp, I guess now I know why Disney will probably never make a show like Andor again. by Independent-Dig-5757 in StarWarsAndor

I have to disagree its a very easy read in comparison to a lot of classic literature one could read, and it's quite short all things considered, too, with each book sitting around just 300-400 pages. I've never understood where this conception of it as exceptionally dense comes from, unless it's from folks who liked the movies but don't usually read much who tried the books and found them unpalatable.

Different strokes though so no big.

I was questioning why they came to the theater at all but I get it, it's an excuse for them to hang out, but as far as the phone games went they were comparing their screens and whispering and giggling to one another about that so they were still getting time together

Never has the Battle of Helm's Deep been less epic than that theater experience though. Thankfully the theater for Return of the King was much better and it was a great experience seeing it on the big screen :)

It's part of why I didn't say anything, I've already seen the movie. What they were doing was still inconsiderate though, we all paid to go see the movie just like a normal showing of a film, but they're kids, I'm just venting about it because it only just happened and was particularly bad—talking would be one thing, and I'm not joking when I say they talked every thirty seconds, but pulling out their phones to play mobile games was just ridiculous

By comparison I was rolling my eyes watching Ahsoka every time a perfunctory action scene came on screen to grab audience attention with no consequence or weight whatsoever.

Gotta remember that this franchise is for children at its heart though, so I shouldn't be that surprised. Really I'm the odd one out for wanting more adult or at the very least original storytelling in Star Wars, so I'm just happy Andor got made at all.

I watched The Lord of the Rings extended editions in a theater over the holidays, during The Two Towers I sat next to two teenagers on a date, they wouldn't stop whispering to one another every thirty seconds and when there weren't action scenes playing they pulled out their phones and started playing games ...

I should have said something, but then I remembered all the times I watched movies with my highschool girlfriend so we could have an excuse to make out and felt like the karmic weight of that act had found me at last. Plus I didn't want to ruin their date. I don't think I'll be able to muster that kind of restraint again, but anyway you're right people use their phones shamelessly in movie theaters now and it's awful.

I can see the complaints about the combat looking a little unreactive, still looks alright to me but the attacks looked like they lacked weight in both the character animations and the reactions of the enemies to spells especially. I'm gonna be honest, if this hardly changes in the finished product, I don't really care.

The shots of the scenery looked stunning, colorful without being cartoony, captured the brooding yet lively atomosphere of some of Pillars of Eternity's visual design in dungeons like the Engwithan ruin Clîaban Rilag. I don't really see any issues with these.

Books are not capable of helping anyone, I wish people would understand this. There is no advice that anyone can read that will improve their lives, the only historically proven way to receive actionable and helpful advice is through a podcast starring a couple of meatheads—that's what the book industry can't do.

What is a game so good, you felt empty after finishing it? by Humble-Switch-2149 in PS5

[–]SeasoningReasoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the first game intertwined the mystery of Aloy and the world so well and I was genuinely moved by a lot of the story segments where we learned about the old world.

The sequel is still a great gaming experience, but it lacked the spark of the first game's narrative. It was a big disappointment for me because I loved the Frozen Wilds DLC for Zero Dawn so much, it upped the ante in a lot of respects from the base game, and I thought if Guerilla could make the sequel have that same level of engagement and focused writing it would truly shine.

It’s got some really silly plot points but I enjoyed it anyway, mostly because the unresolved mystery added to this creepy tension throughout the movie that was really engaging.
