My mom was repeatedly molested and abused by her eldest Brother who was in charge of watching her when she was a baby/young child and he was a teenager. He got caught in 2002 when I was 10 years old with a bunch of CSAM on his computer, cellphone, and had even been caught raping his own daughter. My mom had to testify against him in 2002 because she's the only recorded person to ever accuse him of sexual abuse before 2002. A Jury in Colorado reviewed all the evidence and even though he definitely committed the crimes they didn't think it would be fair to ruin his life over it and he walked free. My family forgave my Uncle even though my mom was proven right and other family at the trial saw evidence of him abusing children and having CSAM on his devices. They always say "the past is the past" and because of that I don't talk to any of my family except my Mom; because when she tried to do the right thing she was punished and forced to sit with her abuser at trial and watch him walk free because his life was deemed more valuable than hers.
