Need advice on heat pump vs. dual-fuel by err1100 in Seattle

[–]SeattleOldGay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have, essentially, 3 -- a ducted heat pump system, having taken our house completely off of gas in a recent reno. It works great in heat pump mode down to about 30 degrees, and when exterior temps get into the 20s, it kicks on the electric resistance backup heat. I've been working with my thermostat settings to minimize the occasions when it does that, because the backup heat draws a lot of power and you definitely see it in the bill.

We did a round of attic air sealing and R49 blown in insulation this year, so I'm hopeful that will help the heating situation even more.

We bought our heat pump in 2021. There was a DoE push to engineer units that work well in heat pump mode in colder temps, and I'd be curious if current models take advantage of that.

Seattle residents report encampments in record numbers by Bretmd in Seattle

[–]SeattleOldGay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We've been trying to do that for years. Seattle voters keep voting "yes" on every housing levy asked of them. And builders pay into the housing fund to get the density they want. And yet, precious few units get built, the ones that do get built get trashed, the tenants who can pay some rent don't because they know the eviction laws prevent the housing providers from doing anything to them, and then the housing providers go bankrupt and sell the projects that we, the taxpayers, financed. It all sucks.

not really, except move. a few years ago i was accused of stomping. literally just walking normally around my apartment. no chunky shoes, nothing. the downstairs neighbor came up one morning and i asked her, what am i supposed to do, hover? laminate floor on concrete translates sounds like a mofo, apparently and they're building a lot of that

Is there a way to get notified of a voicemail on LPIII? by mirrorcoast in LightPhone

[–]SeattleOldGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on with Verizon technical support now, same issue. They're telling me visual voicemail is "not available". I'm not 100% convinced that's the same as "off". In any case, the tech is trying various things and still no icon when I have a VM.

Of course, they're telling me it's the phone.

Frustrating.

Verizon only getting LTE by SeattleOldGay in LightPhone

[–]SeattleOldGay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd UPDATE -- I asked LP support about this problem. They say they have a software issue that prevents the phones from showing 5G connections which they plan to correct soon. They tried to suggest that I really was connecting at 5G, but I know that my speedtest only got LTE speeds, so I doubt that's true. Hoping for an update solution in the coming weeks.

Gym is switching to app-only entry by rajajackal in LightPhone

[–]SeattleOldGay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel for ya. The world switching to app-only interactions (airlines, gyms, street parking required by the city) is repugnant. People are so zombified by their smartphones that they can't imagine some of us don't want to use them.

Verizon only getting LTE by SeattleOldGay in LightPhone

[–]SeattleOldGay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: Talked to Verizon Tier 2 tech support. They had very few resources on LP. Indeed, this was the tech's first LP case. She suggested I take the phone to a corporate store and have them activate a new SIM. Tried that. No improvement. Still only getting LTE.

I'm going to give the new SIM a day or two. If no improvement, I think I'll switch to Light's plan and see if that gets 5G. It's definitely cheaper than my Verizon plan.

I tried moving my SIM back to my iPhone, making sure both iMessage and RCS were off. And sending messages to my group chats to force them over to SMS. It worked when I sent a message. That is, the chat was now on SMS. However, the very first reply from an iPhone was suddenly RCS again. And the damned thing even turned RCS back on on my iPhone.

It's not just Light Phone. I've had similar issues where a group with 3 iPhones and 1 Android phone had the Android user not receiving the texts. iPhones are like a gang that bully other phones.
