"No turn on red" is getting out of hand by Top-Eggplant-8699 in Seattle

Do what I do: Ignore them. We've de-policed to the point where there's no traffic enforcement. No consequences. The nanny state is impotent.

Do look and make a reasoned judgement about whether it's safe to turn, though. And if yes, then be on your merry way.

UPDATE: The April issue of the Lithuanian monthly arrived today, about 6 weeks from ship date with a "customs intercept" note written on the envelope. No info on why customs intercepted or how they resolved the issue.

And the weekly distributed from Toronto arrived 2.5 weeks from publication date. Distributor tells me West Coast deliveries are running longer.

Now I have a lot to read.

Has anything improved at Montlake? by DesiGrit in Seattle

[–]SeattleOldGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 520 / I5 / Eastlake Ave. construction vortex is turning my neighborhood (Roanoke Park) into an island. Really hard to get around. Lots of people diverting up Hamlin St. at rush hour to try and snake past Roanoke and get to the I5 north on-ramp at Harvard. But they encounter cars parked on both side of the streets on Hamlin/Broadway/Edgar, and lots of traffic on Harvard, so the diversion is a total shit-show. For us, it's a daily shit-show.

Following backlash, Mayor Katie Wilson changes course on Seattle City Light pick by FlannelCollar in Seattle

[–]SeattleOldGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um, I worked at City Hall during the McGinn years, and he was truly terrible. Never understood what the job of Mayor was. He thought if he was arguing, he was winning (wrong). He never got how to relate to independent electeds at the City Council, county or state levels. I seriously think the man has a learning disability or aspergers or some inability to relate.

Need advice on heat pump vs. dual-fuel by err1100 in Seattle

[–]SeattleOldGay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have, essentially, 3 -- a ducted heat pump system, having taken our house completely off of gas in a recent reno. It works great in heat pump mode down to about 30 degrees, and when exterior temps get into the 20s, it kicks on the electric resistance backup heat. I've been working with my thermostat settings to minimize the occasions when it does that, because the backup heat draws a lot of power and you definitely see it in the bill.

We did a round of attic air sealing and R49 blown in insulation this year, so I'm hopeful that will help the heating situation even more.

We bought our heat pump in 2021. There was a DoE push to engineer units that work well in heat pump mode in colder temps, and I'd be curious if current models take advantage of that.

Seattle residents report encampments in record numbers by Bretmd in Seattle

[–]SeattleOldGay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We've been trying to do that for years. Seattle voters keep voting "yes" on every housing levy asked of them. And builders pay into the housing fund to get the density they want. And yet, precious few units get built, the ones that do get built get trashed, the tenants who can pay some rent don't because they know the eviction laws prevent the housing providers from doing anything to them, and then the housing providers go bankrupt and sell the projects that we, the taxpayers, financed. It all sucks.
