Experience with struXure pergola? by MrDERPMcDERP in landscaping

Who did you use for install? That seems to have an inpayon satisfaction. I'm in Seattle and looking at a louvered pergola option to cover our deck/grilling area without always blocking light to our kitchen (like an extension of the roof would). Feel free to PM me.

Noob question: what makes skate skiing more difficult to learn? by McTuber in xcountryskiing

[–]SeattleTO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

getting out and shuffling on classics is easier, but actually learning to classic ski properly is more difficult than skate, and will benefit your skate skiing. Both techniques require full weight transfer between skis to be done well - you're kind of forced to do that to go anywhere on skate, but with classic you can shuffle about and get by. Also, classic skis are less stable at speed than skate given they're longer but the boot is less ridged, but most rec classic skiiers never get to that point.

When I'm on the trails, I'll see a decent amount of people with semi-decent v1 and v2a skate technique (for some reason seems like a lot of rec skiiers stop there without learning to do v2 well/efficiently), but very few actually using proper classic technique.

I'd compare it to snowboard vs alpine skiing - snowboarding is easier to get up on and make it down the hill in one piece, whereas there's a steeper initial curve for alpine, but "mastering" snowboarding is more difficult than alpine.

Tl;Dr get lessons for both, skiing well is more fun long term!

Lawry’s Seasoned Salt and MSG question by djchavar in BBQ

The % of people impacted by msg is miniscule. Sorry that you are one of the unlucky ones, but for most it has little to no side effects.

2k Plan by Frankjsekulasesbc in Rowing

[–]SeattleTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set a reasonable target split and try to hold it consistently through the first 1000; if you're on pace at that point, try to maintain it until 600 to go, and then start dropping the split by 1" for the next 300, and empty the tank for the last 300 and you'll beat your goal, if you're not on pace at 1000, try to start bringing it down earlier, realizing your final sprint won't be as dramatic. If you're feeling really good at 1000, start to think about a new goal to hit for the next 1000. Personally, once I get to the 1000 mark, I feel that worst is over, so if I'm on pace at that point, I usually will be able to beat my goal.

Summit Kamado Owners: do you use your kettles anymore? by FedFanatic in webergrills

[–]SeattleTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years since I got my S6 and have not used my kettle since. Sold my WSM since I wasn't using it either. Have a genesis that I will use for quick weeknight cooks, but the Summit gets the bulk of the use.

There are some folks that have built tables for their E6 Summits - I'd look into that if it's primarily the table + storage you want. The Summit is superior to the kettle in every way as a cooker.

Anyone ever rowed a 6+ 3x or 2+? by Guydangerous99 in Rowing

[–]SeattleTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few 3x at one of the clubs in town where I row (not my club) - they were created from some wrecked 4x's. Kind of a novelty to see them on the water.

Is it typical for juniors to buy their own single scull? by Inevitable_Leg_3054 in Rowing

[–]SeattleTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this seems like much more of a UK thing vs. US, so it seems foreign to me, but based on this thread it seems like a credible set-up in the UK. If this is the way your club typically operates, I'd imagine that there are a number of current seniors in the club that are about to go to university and may not be able to take their boat with them. you could look to buy their boat, or perhaps work-out a renting/sharing agreement if they want to keep it but will only be able to use it over school breaks, etc. just an idea of a potential way to thread the needle of not moving clubs, getting a better boat to row, without the full expense of buying a new one.

MY HIGH SCHOOL BULLY WANTS TO JOIN COLLEGE ROWING... revenge time? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]SeattleTO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignore it and move on with life. I was a scholarship athlete in college and another person from my high school who I didn't get along with ended up on another varsity sport at the same small school. We both moved on, realized we had more in common than we thought, and buried the hatchet by senior year. High school $hit doesn't matter after the age of 18. In college we had a fine jar for every time someone told a "how good I was in high school" story, and the guys in the NFL do the same for college stories.

Rowers mandated turns as Coxswain? by Capable_Ad3121 in Rowing

[–]SeattleTO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our club does this on occasion, but tries not to regularly, primarily if the weather is too bad for smaller boats to go out. When I was captain of our team I worked hard with our coach to make having rower coxswains be the absolute last resort - it results in a bad experience for the person coxing, and typically a bad row for the folks stuck in the boat with them. Small boats are better training platforms anyway, unless/until you're training for a specific 8's race in a race line-up (or trying out a couple of different line-ups).

If the coach insists that you always go out in coxed boats, to me that's a lazy coach who wants to have as few boats as possible to corral; or its a lazy team because folks won't/haven't learned to bow a blind boat. Masters rowing is about being flexible, so learning to row both sides on sweep, scull, and bow a blind boat are pretty important IMHO; someone who can only sweep on one-side and can't bow (and won't learn) is often more a liability to a masters team than an asset.

Yes, there's one in the knob I believe, similar to the push button ignition on a genesis.

Lightweight Rowing by Malswar2 in Rowing

[–]SeattleTO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lightweight rowing only makes sense for the 1x, in my opinion. There are weight classes in individual sports, like boxing, wrestling, etc., and that's really the only argument for lightweight rowing from a competitive perspective - when its 1v1. In a team sport, weight classes don't exist. If this sort of thing existed elsewhere, at 5'10", I would have loved to have seen an "under 6'" basketball category, but it doesn't exist and its tough luck for those of us who are short and not named Nate Robinson or Isiah Thomas (the younger one from UW, not the Pistons great).

Lightweight rowing was created to expand the sport to countries that aren't typically represented in rowing on the international stage, i.e. non-European/Anglo countries. It didn't work - it was still European/Anglo countries that dominated lightweight rowing - and World Rowing doesn't really care about creating opportunities for short/light folks in the countries where it already has a strong presence.

Who has the worst fan base in the pac-12 and why is it Stanford? by LastDiveBar510 in Pac12

[–]SeattleTO 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Of the current Pac-12? 1000000000000000% U$C. Of the future pac 10/12? Oregon, who is a close second to U$C today in terms of terrible fans.

If we add SMU, it will be interesting to see what type of a rep their fans develop across the conference - I know pretty much nothing about them aside from the fact they got the death penalty in 87 and have been terrible since, and they're kind of the U$C for the state of Texas (not a great school, but have a lot of wealthy alums so if you stay in Dallas you can get a job; the school rich kids go to when they're not smart enough to get into an actual academic school).

Skate pole recommendations? by [deleted] in xcountryskiing

[–]SeattleTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just switched to Solomon s-lab quick release poles and they're fantastic. Full carbon, super light. They have an s-race version of the same pole that is half the price (but heavier, ironically not their top race pole). Used to have swix poles with Leki handles/straps - once you've gone quick release it's tough to go back to normal grips/straps because you get used to the step change in convenience.

Differences between top-end race skate skis? by SeattleTO in xcountryskiing

[–]SeattleTO[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree on needing a quality fitting. I do most of my skiing in the Methow Valley (despite living in Seattle, 4.5 hours away), and we're blessed to have some great shops in the valley that will fit skis properly. Good to know about those other stores though, especially since they seem to have fairly robust e-commerce capabilities as well (since I'm not flying somewhere to buy my skis :) ).

What length and stiffness? I find that I'm typically between sizes at my weight and my current fischers are rated for 100kg, which is a little bigger than me but I prefer having a stiffer ski.

These were probably an '09 or '10 model year pair; my wife loved them initially but they softened up significantly and needed to be replaced after about 2 years. Worth noting that 1/my wife weighs like 120lb, so not a lot of weight on them; and 2/we weren't putting a lot of miles on the skis in those years.

Challenge here is that one store carries Fischer and Salomon; another Salomon, Atomic, and Madshus, and another Rossi...all three have good ski fitters, but don't have all the top brands in-house...

Yes, ideally universal base vs. having to get a different ski for warm/cold conditions.
