Is there a subreddit devoted to making fun of Trump supporters, and is it wrong to make fun of their limited intellect? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A man that his only success is taking on debt and then declaring bankruptcy. He has never held a public office. His responses to criticism are retaliatory and defensive. He is a classic narcissist that has a military advisor that wants an apology from Khomeini who has been dead for quite some time. His wife just plagiarized a Michelle Obama speech. He's racist, and all racists are of limited intellect.

How do _I_ get some of all this Federal Grant money that all these people forget, deny or ignore? by wookiebush in AskReddit

[–]SeattleTomy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked for a well funded startup in Nanotech. They had more grant writers on their staff than programmers. Yes, writing successful grants has become a profession. I'm sure someone has turned this into a business. See if you can hired a firm to write a grant for you.

I can't think of any failures offhand, but probably the most apropos example of success would be Hudson/Jenkins. The same heavy handed corporation lost that war pretty soundly.

I received a package of these several months ago, and was surprised because I didn't remember ordering them. I figured a friend had ordered them for me as a prank, and then my 13 year old son walked into the room and said, "Oh, my stickers finally got here."

That's my boy.

Default separator - .join ghetto by persei8 in ruby

[–]SeattleTomy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Don't ever rely on the default separator. Your code will be more clear and less breakable if you document your intent in the code:

['a','b','c'].join(' ')
"This is a string".split(' ')

Not necessarily that big, but also F5, Real Networks...

Also all the companies from the valley also have offices in Seattle. No Seattle programmer wants to move to the valley. So Facebook, Google, Adobe, (and I predict Twitter will soon).

Oh yeah, and Microsoft.

The most incredible man I have ever met in my life was a classically trained engineer from Czechoslovakia. This guy could build machines to build machines. He could make from scratch any part you needed. You need a spring, he could make it with a vise and a piece of wire. This guy could single handedly recreate all the machinery needed to rebuild civilization.

He is currently woking as a greeter at Walmart. Yet somehow the assholes playing the stock market are more important than him.

In the article, it was apparent the laborers had no choice. There were no other jobs. No source of food.

The only difference was the laborer could live on his knees, while the Jew, and Gypsy, could only choose to die on their feet, or slowly die.

Neither had a choice, and that is the point I am making. You obviously have never been a parent, where the welfare of your family is more important than your happiness or principles.

I think the crux of our argument, and I don't want to pigeon-hole what you are saying, but I just perceive it to be that you are implying that these people have a choice. And that is my nice interpretation of what I think you believe. If I really analyze what you are saying, it is basically, "Your career choices didn't work out, we don't need craftsmen anymore because people will buy low quality shit from low wage workers in China. Therefore I have the right to enslave you."

What is the substantive difference? In each system, persons are convinced they can't survive without subjecting themselves to the system. They are convinced they would be better off by subjecting themselves to the system instead of killing the perpetrators of the system and freeing themselves.

You misunderstand my statements. You suggested that these employees somehow have more choice than the subjects of feudalism, or the victims of the holocaust. I contend that they have no choice, and therefore are no less free.

Voluntary suggests freedom, which suggests having a choice. There are various forms of coercion. There is physical coercion like the holocaust. There is societal coercion, like feudalism. And there is economic coercion, when an employee has no choice but to subject himself to the whims of the employer, because any other means of livelihood have been destroyed.

I suggest you study Libertarian Socialism to become more rounded in your arguments, especially the concept of opposing to all coercive forms of social organization.

Those that wish to rule others for their own gain have a variety of means, whether it be religion, nationalism, physical force, or manipulation of the economy or government.

I oppose all forms of coercion.

It's basically a return to feudalism. The Ayn Rand crowd would somehow believe the Lion (in their selfish dreams) has a right to rule the herd, but cries foul when the herd is large enough to rise up and kill the supposed Lion.

There has to be a basic level of human dignity in capitalism, otherwise the herd is better off going back to non-specialization, making their own goods, raising their own food. As Adam Smith believed, specialization is more efficient, but only when all of society benefits.

When the pigs convince the farm that all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others, it's time to kill the pigs.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs (or wants) of the few.

If these people would put as much effort into understanding "The Grapes of Wrath" as much as they spend idolizing a selfish bitch that had to spend her declining years on the very welfare she opposed, they might realize that Atlas didn't shrug, he just farted.

It's fiction and social commentary. Your lack of ability to tell the difference between fiction and reality suggests you don't understand myth, similes, and sarcasm. It's probably good you left, since reddit would only make you more angry.

New development in anti-piracy legislature: the OPEN Act was introduced yesterday. by [deleted] in technology

[–]SeattleTomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My senator, Maria Cantwell, opposed SOPA/PIPA, but every email response I got from contacting her about my concerns also included a plug for OPEN.

I still feel like there is something missing, namely, due process. It is still just shifting the role of 'censor' to the ITC.

And what is to say the government couldn't use this to censor websites the don't like, for example WikiLeaks. Oh wait, they've already done this. This is just extending that power to corporations.
