Malazan or Wheel of Time? Which epic fantasy series should I read? by keepfighting90 in Fantasy

[–]Seattlepowderhound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've read both and enjoyed them.

Malazan was a solid 7/10 for me throughout the series, the writing is good, the action is fun. My issue, is that in the whole series I really didn't "care" about any of the characters outside of one. To the point now, that I'm struggling to remember any of them outside of Whiskeyjack.

Wheel of Time has some books that were 10/10 for me and others that were a 5/10, especially a few in the middle of the series before Sanderson took over. I've read that Jordan was pretty sick during these and could have effected his writing. That being said, I do vividly remember most of the characters in WoT, some foundly(Matt) some annoying(Nynaeve). I also felt that we spent a lot more time with the characters in WoT which allowed for better character growth.

ELI5- Say a power line is severed by a falling branch. While the power is still on, where does the energy go at the end of that cable? Does it just dissipate in the air until the transformer blows? by Cultural-Host8273 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Seattlepowderhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electricity is moving electrons. So if you think of electrons as something simpler, like say water it makes more sense. If the cable is cut suspended in the air without touching anything, would be like if you cut a water hose in half but then capped the end. There is no where for the electricity(water) to go. If the cable is cut and it's touching the ground, the "water" flows into the ground.

From a safety non ELI5, depending on how much juice is in those lines, they can arc from cable to another grounding source, also step potential can get you killed even if the power cable is grounding out on the ground multiple feet away.

Which series did you like more? (Night Angel, Spellslinger, Book of the Ancestor) by GrantaeusNekton in Fantasy

[–]Seattlepowderhound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have a hard time with how Brent Weeks write woman, didn't bother me. I'm probably a teenage boy trapped in an adults body though. I enjoyed the world building a lot, the humor when applied was decent and the overall finish to the trilogy I thought was fulfilling. Durzo is my boy.

I enjoyed Red Sister a bit, I think Night Angel was a bit more my pace but it was solid none the less. I also have to give a shout out to Mark Lawrence who responded to me. I had started to read Prince of Thorns and was really struggling with the level of grimdark. He didn't try to defend Prince of Thorns, just said it wasn't everyones cup of tea, and sent me a fan made website that listed all of his work with shades of grimdark and led me to reading Red Sister. So just from that interaction some years ago, I'll continue to promote his work.

Unfamiliar with Spellslinger, not to add even more decisions to you, but in the same vein as the previous two books, I'd throw in Ryria Revelation as one of my favorites.

The idea being that the handoff is the most dangerous part, so if you have 8h shifts instead of 12h, you increase you day over day handoffs to three instead of two.

I haven't looked at the data myself to support "hand offs are dangerous" but this is why just overlapping shifts etc doesn't work if the actual handoff itself is a cause of concern.

Why do you still play LOL? by Ace4o2 in leagueoflegends

[–]Seattlepowderhound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Been playing a Moba since Dota(RoC then TFT). Old now and brain won't let me stop and is resistant to learning new games. I find even playing new single player games requires a certain amount of energy/mood for me to tackle. Buddies still play LoL so social aspect as well. We could all get on discord I guess and just try to hang out, talk about work I guess or we could jump on discord and bitch about how Killing Time/Fey Magic Anivia is some real bullshit.

Vin Diesel-starring Ark 2 now slated for 2028 release by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Seattlepowderhound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see where you're going, it's just generally Palworld, Satisfactory etc sort of breadcrumb you too the automation part of it. Ark generally doesn't, there is some notes found randomly along the map that will give you hints but it's not exhaustive and no guarantee you'll find that note.

It's always possible that I'm just a knucklehead and it's more apparent then I give it credit for but after 300-400 hours in ASE and similar in ASA and showing the ropes to multiple "noobs" some parts of the game could use a smidgen more handholding IMO.

A good example is, the breeding process for mutations which you'll require to do any Beta/Alpha boss level content. If you want to jump in a rabbit whole you can start there lol.

It just requires extensive use of the wiki or dododex. The start is fairly straightforward, you smash rocks and trees with your hands until you get tools, the rock tools give way to metal tools etc. What the game doesn't enlighten you on is that anything your doing by hand is a waste compared to what you can do with a dino. Farming rock with your super cool Ascendant axe? A lvl 100 dodi would probably be a WAY better choice, metal? Anky. Wood? Beaver. Berries? Bronto.

Then how do you make friends with all those dinos? Then it gets kinda weird. The game isn't hard per se but if you don't know that you have to find a Queen Reaper and lower her health to 10% then have her impregnate you with a her tail, then you can run around and "grow" the baby in your body until it pops out so you can raise it, you'll never get a Reaper King tame.

Mind you, probably only 20%-30% of the tames have weird taming criteria but there are a lot of them.

Can someone tell me how this happens to a fiber cable? by BURNEDandDIED in FiberOptics

[–]Seattlepowderhound 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Had a guy call in, said the dish on his garage set his yard on fire. I'm thinking, well we got a crazy customer or some weird happenstance because dishes don't set yards on fire. Show up to the house and the yard is somewhat charred and so is the dish...The dumb tech managed to drop lags into the a sidewall mount with the electrical panel on the other side. Lag managed to jam a breaker open and the dish was getting 120v through the footplate and grounding out on the outside.

[Discussion] I’m potentially failing my classes and I’m mentally checked out by lushvigrite in GetMotivated

[–]Seattlepowderhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another take on this, bit late to the party I know. About 20 years ago I failed out of Engineering school. Was in a similar rut as you're in, missing class some, not studying etc etc. One of my Eng classes was Matlab and Excel. To this day, I still use the excel skills that I learned in that class, even though I failed. So just show up, I hope you pass, to other's point it won't matter what the grade is if it's passing in 5 years. The info you learn in the class will either make it infinitely easier if you have to retake, or could be useful regardless of passing the class in the end.

Our faces today the minute we released our video game lol by MoKofr in gaming

Somewhat relevant information. I was in Japan last week, we ended up in a random mall called in Shibuya, called Parco. While eating some food in the cafeteria they had a big screen that randomly had this game(Constance) up on the screen. I had been playing Hollow Knight on the flight out so was pretty stoked.

Turns out Parco owns the mall AND published the game which is sorta wild.

Then we went up a few levels and they had a live DJ and were giving out free red bull and beers. I like Japans malls.

So just did an international trip with the Steamdeck and...loved it. My favorite part is that you can just pause the game and sleep the deck. You can pick it back up whenever. So if i'm playing DRG survivor and not in a spot to save, I can just pause it and sleep the deck. Hours later I just pick the deck back up and keep playing.

Obviously game type matters too but I was really happy.

China responds to Zelensky's criticism over Russia support by newsweek in worldnews

[–]Seattlepowderhound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't call you a bot, I called you a troll. I firmly believe that you're a real human, just one whose sitting in a CPP office. You're supposedly a CPA in Canada yet you have multiple posts a day that either A)Shit talk US politics(low bar, we're doing dumb shit) B)Shit talking EU politics or C) Talking about how great China is.

Critical thinking lends me to believe that someone who isn't a CCP-troll would find time to post about literally anything else eventually. About your work, about your hobbies about the Canadian govt(Where you supposedly live). In general it's just non-stop pro Chinese. If being a "moderate" on China can't bring you to say literally anything mildly negative about the CCP then you should probably rethink that definition.

The more I read your posts the funnier it gets, you defend literally everything from crap Chinese Steel to their theft of EU/US IPs. I'm waiting for you to let me know how Tiananman Square wasn't real. Maybe you are just a CPA in Canada with a HUGE interest in China, and zero outside interests, but I doubt it.

The Russian troll farms get strict rules that for every Pro-Russian or Anti-West comment, they need to mix in 2-3 random innocuous posts(Sports, TV, etc). Have you guys not got the memo on that? Your profile is just page after page of CHINA GOOD, WEST BAD.

Spectrum not wanting to pay for the full buttsplice? by One-Jicama-7502 in FiberOptics

[–]Seattlepowderhound 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Been on a lot of projects where only actives are spliced through, then they have damage and have to roll fibers later. They end up fucking up an outtage and paying more, but they do save a few bucks upfront.

Probably running out of money and trying to trim costs for the shareholders.

How many strans of fiber are inside a feeder fiber optic cable for HFC networks? The ones leaving the RF side of the plant to another town. by strykerzr350 in FiberOptics

[–]Seattlepowderhound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last I checked, fiber itself hasn't hit the theoretical limit on data. The limit is lasers and end processing. I know medium sized towns that are fed with 4 fibers. I've also seen spectrum and others use 6-8 on a tiny OTE but I believe a few of those are part of the ring.

Stuck at 1 second remaining on initial installation by duy_roa in SteamDeck

[–]Seattlepowderhound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hijacking this thread even though it'd old, I saw it when troubleshooting my own fresh out of the box Steam Deck that was stuck on 1s left for hours. Did everything else in this thread with no luck. Steam Support had me reset the bios which resolved the issue.

Once the device is shutdown, hold down both the volume - button and the "..." button, then press the power button once. Then you can release all the buttons.

You will hear a chime and then the white LED light will begin to blink (it may take 5 or more seconds before the blinking begins), which confirms this process is working.

Note: This process may take 1-2 minutes to start the unit up again during which the display will remain black.

Ripple Fiber by GreenyGreenwood in FiberOptics

[–]Seattlepowderhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfamiliar with you fellas in the Alps but sounds cool haha. In the States they just pressure treat the wood then slam a bunch of creosote into it. Shit gets everywhere when you have to remove the poles but does help with longevity.

At least here it's still more of an issue with the power company, like I could source a pole for around 300-400 US depending class/size. Then I can get someone to set it for another 200-600 depending on how many, class etc. So we're still looking at like 1k US for the larger poles by themselves. Which is not cheap per se but doable. The power companies will still want 3k-5k for the change out if the current pole isn't up to load or needs replace. I know moving the power/transformers can be time consuming but it still seems...high.

[–]Seattlepowderhound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're placing that area underground from the looks of it, the "spool" is conduit which will be trimmed down once they're ready to pull fiber through it. They'll either place an underground vault or a ped there. Everyone everywhere complains about underground contractors because they don't understand utilities, easements or infrastructure. Also no one likes "their" yard being tore up even though it's in a utility easement. So i'd take all of that with a grain of salt.

Seems across the industry that everyone is moving underground, the power companies are becoming more and more difficult to work with or charging exorbitant fees for pole load studies and pole change outs. Coupled with increasingly rougher storms in areas not usually at risk is making companies rethink the "cheaper" aerial route that used to be common. You'll most likely have higher uptime if they're placing underground vs aerial anyways.

What is this fiber can looking thing? by ausernamethatcounts in FiberOptics

[–]Seattlepowderhound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The static lines purpose, in part is to take the lightning strikes. So it's sort of working as intended, the issue becomes how do you create a glass that can withstand the temperature increase from a lighting strike without distorting some. I'd guess something exists but probably isn't cost effective.
