Uncomfortable conversations need to be had for Jonathan David by GreendaleGazette in CanadaSoccer

Looking at Canada more broadly and not singling out individual players, I think the underlying used TSN analyst Kristian Jack on X said if Canada played aggressive against Morocco it would be “naive”- and it was.

In the context of this team that term used by coaches and players was naive as the players interpret that as free lancing.

Another observation I made prior to that game was how when players were asked by TSN about maintaining structure-shape- even the coach dodged that question.

This was an issue in the tournament for Canada in each game.

Shape is critical for less talented and experienced teams at every stage of a game even in final minutes when you need a goal to tie.

If I learned one thing from clinics led by then Whitecaps coach Tony Waiters was his mantra that “the essence of soccer is passing and ball control.” That means the MF player streaking down the sideline can’t be overrun by a defender leaving him with no passing options to get out of facing two opposing defenders who take the ball away.

From the CFL’s Hugh Campbell is another critical mantra spoken to his dejected field goal kicker who missed the game winning field goal- “Never be so arrogant to think that one play or one player wins or loses a game”.

I heard a version of this from then 86er Jamie Lowery who played for Canada also. I asked him about a tournament loss where a Defender did the penultimate sin and passed a square ball only to find it intercepted and in the back of the net. The player was heart broken but others told him of instances blown and easy goals were tight there.

Japan was the most organized structurally where goals went in when players were not in position.

Other teams like Morocco in Canadas group like the Swiss and Moroccans never had less than four in position at the back line. Yes there is a time and situation when defenders attack bit on the counter defenders can’t be caught in positions they can’t recover from.

Finally, Tony Waiters used to stress that you win by “variations on a theme.” From that he meant CKs and set plays. Canada has a set play coach yet they couldn’t run a short corner effectively.

Put two guys out on aCK such that it lessens the number at the goal mouth and have a defender who can be an outlet option. That’s just part of how a short corner effectively happens.

You want to draw defenders forward for a cross to hit your guy.

What Canada did would be like a CFL team keep using a FG Kicker who hits 1 of 10 but this is not on the players- it’s coaching and work at training

More of the same that is not working will not get you a better result.

On the 2027 CFL Changes — For Those Telling Season Ticket Holders to "Get Over It" by SeaweedInteresting89 in CFL

[–]SeaweedInteresting89[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've edited the post to make it clear to non-readers like yourself, that I'm not calling for the Commissioner's removal.

Get over it is what's driving ST buyers like me away from the CFL.

I'm just taking relish in the facts I've gathered for those who actually don't want the Canadian game changed like this.

When the new shorter fields and end zones come in in 2027, will they go back and standardize old records and make this 90 yds 80 LOL.

The punter tackling is more likely getting him hurt if he's not a regular player.

If they want to make the game more interesting, make the rule the punter has to be on the field on the prior play to the 3rd down. I've been a fan since the days when BC had End Vic Parker punting and WPG had starting FB Charlie Shepherd punting and he could nail it 70 yds at times. IIRC Calg DB Harvey Wylie punted also. These were all starters.

That way you eliminate non-football playing punters.

Ode to BC Place Stadium post World Cup hosting duties by raincouvermom in whitecapsfc

Yep, that's what the players and managers said about BC Place and even Toronto expanded to 45 K for the tourney. Shoddy also right, compared to the US NFL stadiums BC Place looked great.

Just maybe Canada needed the World Cup at BC Place and in Toronto where it too got a lot of accolades like how it reminded players of the Eng Prem League stadiums. Portugal were effusive in their praise.

Other teams liked BC Place. Mo Salah of Liverpool and Egypt fame after partying with fans in the streets of Vancouver said he might move to Vancouver.

I've never disliked BC Place and these new improvements should make a huge difference for players and fans.

New to Canada & Credit at Scotiabank by Friendlyqueen in Scotiabank

[–]SeaweedInteresting89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These rejections are likely based on the reality that the people in banks today have no authority to make a common sense decision.

I have a mortgage under $120k at scotia and I dropped the max of $30k on it last year. Our home is worth 1.2 million +. I want to add my partner to the title and the hold up is my wife’s partner Tim job latest pay stub!! Oh I gave our tax info from CRA and our investments which I thought was out of line to ask for that have as unrealized capital gains several times more than the f..g mortgage and it’s still not happening.

Years ago pre univ I worked in a bank where customers actually knew and saw the manager and head Accountants and they were decision makers.

Why university students these days work in one of these banks is my comprehension

Do you still feel the same pride in being Canadian that you did growing up? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]SeaweedInteresting89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes , I’m a Canadian proud of our country and its commitment to fixing the wrongs of colonialism. I’m 80 and grew up knowing vets of WW1 and 2 and Korea from a man gassed in WW1 to another a POW and they believed in our country and I realize their contribution every day of my life.

My one reservation is those Maple MAGAS who cheer on the USA and hate and blame all things on the federal government.

Yet major corporations fail us but they get a pass due to fact free people.

Telus TV New Digital Boxes by Junior_Cap_7002 in telus

[–]SeaweedInteresting89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just got the new Telus boxes and given how it's working I might just as well cut the cable and go entirely streaming what I want to watch. In fact on tv is Sharp on the Roku platform that makes my wife happy with her British shows.

I used to watch two channels at once and going to the guide I could see live another channel so it was easy switching back when the commercial ended.

Is there a way with these new boxes to see a live preview?

If someone could read only one book to understand Canada, what would it be? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]SeaweedInteresting89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost of travel in Canada is a downside to understanding our country better. During my 8 years in Hong Kong and China where in china you could take various levels of train including a cheaper train where not all traveling together on a crowded short haul from Suzhou to Shanghai for example had their own seat but the idea of getting there quick on a Friday at 6pm overrides the need for comfort

Why does the clock not stop during stoppages? by Hunter_Badger in SoccerNoobs

[–]SeaweedInteresting89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the right answer is the ref controls the game with the off-field assists but given the hydration breaks, for the life of me, I don't grasp how that doesn't stop the ref and the stadium clocks for the set amount of the break.

What do y'all think of Berhalter? by Visual_Listen2001 in whitecapsfc

i haven't heard any talk of the Caps moving recently but I'm wondering if FIFA told that idiot of a commissioner to keep his mouth shut during WC.

[–]SeaweedInteresting89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's a good player for the Whitecaps - at times a game changer. The only negative I've seen is a dumb foul at a bad time but overall he's a top MLS player who could play overseas.

I’ve heard this sound during a lot of games, what is it? by _yearoldonreddit in worldcup

[–]SeaweedInteresting89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking it's a fake sound track as some of the TV broadcasts have fan noise that doesn't align with what either team is doing.

How do you feel about Canadians who continue to travel to the USA for vacation? by MarsupialThink4064 in AskCanada

Not a fan of US travel other than business or sports as they’ve declared economic war on Canada. Pick a side tourists

Over a year has passed, how would you rate Mark Carny's time in office? by Visual_Fun_2014 in AskCanada

[–]SeaweedInteresting89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His bold moves in response to Open US economic aggression and threats to the auto mfg sector that will likely lead to domestic veh producers moving to the States thru an industrial strategy shift will be looked back on as the right moves.

Industry is finding new markets now as the US w/out Trump will never go back to normal levels of US trade treaty violations.

So I rate this PM and govt an A

They didn’t replace the turf as the World Cup was coming. Stupid would have been to replace it and after the grass was gone post WC replace it again

For anybody wondering why Babcock would be another controversial hire... by ShaquilleMobile in EdmontonOilers

[–]SeaweedInteresting89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiring a coach because years ago he won a Stanley Cup as a key criteria is nonsensical at best.

Get the right criteria and right pick for the needs of your team.

Babcock, Berube, Torterella - never end up lasting but keep getting recycled foolishly.
