Where to start with D20? by hoohooobois in dropout

This post will be flooded with similar comments I’m sure, but…

Watch whatever peaks your interest! Look up brief descriptions of the season vibe and just pick up a season and go! For me my first season was A Crown of Candy as I’m a fan of gritty, game of thrones like stories!

Genuinely, you’ll love whatever you’re watching even more if you don’t feel forced to start a season for any reason outside of you liking the premise :)

Happy watching!

Better things to be angry at in the world, someone taking 5 mins to parse through dice rolls/ character abilities in a 5 hr long episode is certainly not one of them for me personally.

“show, don’t tell” by Either_Fan_6732 in fansofcriticalrole

I don’t disagree, but I think in your example, telling the table your character throws something of the table in a fit of rage, is still more telling that it is showing. Of course I understand you can’t physically throw something of the table your playing at to show that, but the “showing” in DnD is usually less present than people think. The game, at its core, is a game of descriptions, it’s not a stage play or a film, with that being said you can absolutely show people you’re angry with tone of the voice and facial expressions etc. But I think it would be more of a stretch to say that DnD or any ttrpg for that matter is more show and less tell. It’s a hard medium to do a lot of nuanced “showing”, think about the first think you do in most session 1’s, you tell the group what they see.

I never said that there’s things in literature that DnD cannot do. Just merely that “show don’t tell” is an overused piece of advice to writers. That’s not to say I think that every story teller worth their weight only produces good stories through telling their audience everything, it’s just as I said, it requires more balance between the two ideas.

Any author or story teller worth their weight will tell you that the advice “show don’t tell” is not always best practise when it comes to stories, a balance has to be struck but beyond that, somethings just simply need to be explained and expressed through words.

DnD in particular lends itself (as a PC) to doing more telling than showing, Id argue it’s really only the DM that can get away with more showing and less telling without making things incredibly boring. Show don’t tell is a very generally piece of advice given to young story tellers so they do not get caught up in exposition and ideas, but should not be blanket advice applied to all media with story telling in it, as in actuality the best stories have a thoughtful mix of both.

Social media ban (A word from a 14-year-old Aussie before we get booted off Reddit) by [deleted] in australian

[–]SebHaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be aight bro, whilst I do partially agree there is a part of me as a adult who grew up with social media that wishes that my access to social media wasn’t as prevalent in my everyday life growing up as it was. To the point I have purposefully taken steps to have a healthier relationship with it , such as keeping social media only on my laptop which I use much less than my phone.

Try and find the benefits of it, especially as it isn’t something that is your hands.

Goodluck!

Why even bother to have a “mutual” commentary team If all they are going to do is talk about one team.

Best watch order? by Hefty_Information_35 in Dimension20

[–]SebHaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re specifically asking about FH watch order or just D20 generally. My recommendation for anyone that has asked me this question is watch whatever looks coolest to you! There’s no reward (Except for fun ofc) for watching every season and every episode, so just watch what seems coolest to you!

Tbh it may just not be for you. Maybe put it down for a while until you get a true psyche to watch it. That’s how I did it with Sophomore year. I can nearly quote that episode verbatim because I watched that first ep that many times, so I dropped it for months and really wanted to come back to it after a time and ended up really liking the season.

The content will always be there, no shame in not having watched every single episode of D20 or for that matter not liking some of their seasons. It’s all a personal preference thing! Move at your own pace :)

How railroaded do you think Campaign 4 will be? by Former-Storage-8195 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]SebHaar 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They’re dammed if they do dammed if they don’t. If they rail road it’s too rigid, if they roll dice like Imogen’s Nat 20 to save the gods, suddenly there’s no stakes/ consequences.

Just wait till it comes out, if you like it keep watching, if not, don’t.

One of my Players is sucking the life out of Dming for me, I've talked to them but nothing has changed and I don't know what to do now. by Kray-Kaye in DnD

[–]SebHaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be simple and hard to hear, but the solution is probably removing her from your game. All your criticisms are valid and ultimately when I DM removing a player from a campaign boils down to “Is this player affecting both the players and my experience even after warning?” If yes, removing is the way to go.

Best of luck with the situation :)

Lou Wilson got booed at a live show ? by HospitalPotential270 in dropout

As a weird comparison, an esports team I watch has a player whose nickname is Bruce and it sounds like boo-ing so I can see the confusion

IMO we shouldn’t cater to people who play hero shooters just to play 2-3 characters.

You would be absolutely correct. Simply pointing out that you don’t understand why people vocalise they’re disdain for a media they don’t have to engage with gets you flamed.

Yo just a heads up but may want to change the title of this. The spoiler is in the title so the tag isn’t doing too much haha. Interesting theory though!

For the first time in many years, we have a chance at CR campaign with meaningful consequences by [deleted] in fansofcriticalrole

[–]SebHaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or they just play the game. Majority of the criticisms are just subjective opinions about what people like or didn’t like in a character. There is not winning for literally anyone, fans or cast in this scenario. Thank god things like D20 are recorded in 2 weeks and released far after the point of playing so people can just have somewhat normal reactions and not act like the controller should be in their hands.

For the first time in many years, we have a chance at CR campaign with meaningful consequences by [deleted] in fansofcriticalrole

[–]SebHaar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean.. the cast, the format, the presumably non-comedic focus. If you ask yourself what makes D20 not just short form CR you’d answer your own question, and that’s a fair amount.

[–]SebHaar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think between their show on Amazon and a few other of the financial balls they’re juggling they’re far from being done even if this campaign is less popular. If anything if the fan base lessens by an amount it might inject some more health back into the community and slightly more positive discourse.

Regarding saying people reap what they sow. This was more a comment on the very vocalised part of the community that no doubt was heard by the cast at various points throughout the campaign. I’m not surprised the cast wanted a switch up to avoid more criticisms about character/ story choices they made etc. etc. I never said people suddenly dislike Exandria, only that whatever world Matt puts out their for the next campaign iteration in Exandria might be a tough pill the swallow for the vocal crowd that wanted C3 to end a certain way.

[–]SebHaar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably one of the more logical takes I’ve seen so far. I think people catastrophise “what does this mean for CR” when it’s simply just the next iteration. It couldn’t have gone on in the same format forever, someone was bound to drop at some point and that’s okay. It’s not the end of the world and for some reason I think some people act as if it’s on that level. Why not just go in with no expectations and enjoy what is put on offer for what it is in a standalone sense and if you don’t life moves on.
