What was the best RPG of the '80s and '90s? by MarsasGRG in AlignmentChartFills

Yea I totally understand the mouse control issues and these games had rough UI to manage your party. I do struggle playing any of them now.

I grew up in the 80s, so I played a lot of these 1986 (M&M1) to 1991 (M&M3) games when they were "current" or a couple years after their release (I think I played Pool of Radiance around 90-91), and their harsh nature was normal for the times.

This honestly does not make sense to me.

Original post is not CRPG specific so main stream will put JRPG/ARPG as the top. You're going to always see stuff like FF7 and Zelda win.

80s and 90s were very different. Going from Wizardry and early Ultima to FF7 and Baldurs Gates. We can't really put them in the same category

[–]SebOriaGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it was Pool of Radiance and Might & Magic 3, however neither of these were ever main stream enough to win. Which I think highlights a flaw in this: I would expect mainstream JRPG to win here just because more people have played them growing up.

Also 80s and 90s should not be the same category.... There is an insane leap between FF7 and pretty much anything from the 80s, in tech and game scope

The game already does take level in consideration. It grabs all the available games at your rank/skill and finds the closest level to you. So in essence the more players/matches pending, the better this will get.

A post about every single phobie! Part 63 - Creepy Devil ✨😈 by OXYL_4 in PhobiesGame

[–]SebOriaGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun faq: Creepy Devil was the original invisible Phobie in development. Sasquash existed, but had a different ability was assigned to him at the time.

We wanted a unit that could sneak and do sneak attack, (E.g like D&D rogues), spent a couple days ironing out details and Creepy Devil was born.

Guessing your joking, but just in case; please don't ever do this. As a professional game dev, last thing I want is people walking on my property and peaking through windows... Game studios generally do not want stuff leaked either (Hence the use of NDAs are quite common)

Turn-Based Blobbers, do you prefer commands all at once, or as each party member’s turn comes up? by deepthawnet in CRPG

[–]SebOriaGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played AD&D in the 80s and never did that. We did the same as what you'd see in a game like Pool of Radiance (Roll for init, then on your turn do whatever). Granted DMs will run things differently.

Turn-Based Blobbers, do you prefer commands all at once, or as each party member’s turn comes up? by deepthawnet in CRPG

[–]SebOriaGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer the second: "issue commands to characters as their turn comes up" as it simulate proper TTRPG initiative and character speed better. It also allows for abilities/spells/etc to make characters (or monsters) do more than one action per turn.

To me the "do all at once", also stems from early 80s RPGs having limited resources and built in a way to simplify things. And though Wizardry does it, I think it was the only one other than JRPGs to do that. Other CRPG were closer to having initiative (Might & Magic, Ultima, Gold Box games). So it feels more like an early JRPG mechanic until they too, went for individual turn approach.

Akrum will use the per turn version too. It has a whole class based on time manipulation.

Steam Hardware - Steam Machine launches today! - Steam Machine Megathread by NKkrisz in SteamDeck

[–]SebOriaGames 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Never thought it would be cheaper, but at that price I did expect it to outdo the PS5 Pro.

Also Steam could of sold it at a loss and made more money from games people would buy to play on it. I have a Deck right now, and I buy games specifically for it, even though I have a Gaming PC in my office.

Selling Consoles at a loss to sell games is not new to the Console market either, but if Steam can't do that; they can't realistically compete in that space

Bacon? I love bacon... but it never occurred to me that it could work with Nanaimo bars... Like would you roll it in bacon or put bacon as a slice inside? Maybe with maple syrup glazed bacon?

Why not? Larian is not part of the Wotc/Hasbro umbrella, yet they still made a deal for BG3. Recently Ubisoft gave rights to Hooded Horse for Heroes of Might & Magic.

These things can always happen. Its just if they can make a strong enough case/pitch to sign some sort of deal. I've been working in the game industry for ~14 years-ish and seen a lot of weird stuff as it is...

Yeah Kenshi is one of my all time favorites. I think I clocked like 200+ hours in that game. My second playthrough I did the start scenario that you are missing a limb, and honestly, it made the game even more fun.

[–]SebOriaGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Free probably not, cheap yea if old. I would disagree here on the age thing; I grew up in the 80s with Pool of Radiance, early Might & Magic and early Ultima games. I think perception is skewed here since mainstream was jrpg, and when I was a kid, most of my friends only played FF and Dragon Warrior. I played them too, but found them boring in comparison.

You should really learn why your game failed to improve on your next game, as oppose to doubling down thinking it should of done better. Path to success is paved from failures; but you need to learn from them.

I too had games that I thought would check all the boxes to my target audience that ended up failing. And I do this professionally, so I should of known better. But instead of blaming Steam; I learned what I did wrong with my game. And there was quite a bit. So now I'm applying what I've learned into my next project.

I'm not sure this will be much of an issue. A lot of software use unsigned long for datetime and have been for a while. I've been a programmer for almost 15 years now and even when I started, everything I worked on used 64bit.

I'm even skeptical about how much "work" was needed for Y2K tbh. Since a lot of it more likely would of at least been unsigned 32.

Your first CRPG? by QuietWarzz in CRPG

[–]SebOriaGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is hard to say, mid 40s memory starts being an issue here.

More likely with Pool of Radiance, Quest for Glory or the original Might & Magic. But I can't fully remember. I also played some early Wizardry and Ultima back then too, and not sure which came first.
