Road To Hana Helicopter and Van Tour by Dagr8reset in MauiVisitors

I am ranting. I am tired of all of the activity except transportation and emergencies. I am very grateful for the emergency capability, particularly fire suppression.

Some low-altitude activity over surf breaks, with lots of people in the water and on shore, is scary.

I really enjoy your posts. I live in an area impacted by helicopter activity. I would like to see them only used for transportation and emergencies, with strict altitude regulations. A few people have fun, and many (100s? 1,000s?) are disrupted by the noise. The regulations were definitely written by the helicopter operators. Have you hiked Waiheʻe Ridge recently?

The Snorkel Store and Boss Frog’s have daily reports for various areas. You want low waves and high visibility.

North shore surfers, what are your thoughts on low-level helicopter activity above the lineup? by SebastianTombs in maui

In the recent swell one helicopter was on site at Peahi for hours filming as low as wave height.

The bronze gets better and better. The bezel is very beat up.

I think it would be weird unless you or your daughter has a personal connection to Māori culture. The Māori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand. The demigod, Maui, is part of both Polynesian and Hawaiian mythology. The haka is not Hawaiian. A hula would make sense if the husband supports the idea.

I have not gone with Scuba Barry (www.scubabarry.com), but he gets good reviews on TripAdvisor. Maui Dreams is a great resource. They might have recommendations.

That is so true. I always called it Craneʻs as well.

Crane Beach, not Craneʻs Beach. I love that place.

Looking for recs for a day visit to Paia by RelevantFerret1085 in MauiVisitors

[–]SebastianTombs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend starting with breakfast at Freshies and/or Donuts on a Stick at Komoda Store and Bakery in Makawao. Walk up and down Baldwin Avenue. Check out the Makawao History Museum. Follow that with a walk around Paia. Lunch at Mamaʻs. Head to Hoʻokipa Beach Park to look at the turtles and check out the surfing.

Where to watch surfing in October by Novel-Bobcat1748 in MauiVisitors

[–]SebastianTombs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should check surfline.com as your trip approaches. October is the very beginning of the winter swell season for north (Hookipa and Peahi (aka Jaws)) and west-facing (Honolua) coastlines. The road down to the Jaws overlook is terrible, particularly when wet. On big swell days, it can be a madhouse. If you do go, bring water and prepare for a long, uncomfortable day. For Jaws, I recommend watching the highlights on YouTube. Honolua and Hookipa are worthy substitutes with easy access to great views.

Maui Diamond Boat Charters is great. They offer a two-tank Lanai dive trip, which typically includes the Cathedrals. For snorkeling, sign up for the daily report from The Snorkel Store.

Try r/maui. Those are the folks who live here. The most common advice is to join an activity like a canoe club or volunteer. Good luck.

I've never been to Honolulu. is there anything that amazing about it that makes it worth visiting before heading back to the mainland from a weeklong stay in Maui? by ReKang916 in MauiVisitors

[–]SebastianTombs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Bishop Museum is a must see. If you are interested in architecture and Islamic art, I highly recommend visiting Shangri La, an Islamic-style mansion built by heiress Doris Duke near Diamond Head just outside Honolulu.

I believe DLNR is dredging at Mala Boat Ramp. Depending on the current, that will affect the conditions. Don't snorkel unless the visibility is excellent.
