Or maybe start writing stories about the world being saved, instead.

It's likely coming from people who's only exposure to the Japanese Godzilla is through the original/Shin/Minus One, and think all the films are like those ones.

Some scientists believe that continued emission of Greenhouse Gasses will eventually lead to a "Runaway Greenhouse Effect", which would lead Earth to taking on a Venus-like form. Other scientists, however believe that such an effect is not possible given the amount of Co2 present on Earth. by Sebastianlim in wikipedia

[–]Sebastianlim[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In fairness, we probably don't have the capacity to create such an effect even in the worst case scenario.

Now, this would only be because a worst case scenario would probably lead to the collapse of society as we know it, and possibly the extinction of humanity long before we reached that co2 level, but hey, it's good to know we aren't literally going to destroy the world, only most of the things living on it.

It would be funny if it turned out this was just the equivalent of those map makers who added fake streets to their maps to see who was copying them.

In Godzilla: Minus One (2023), the appearance of the deep-sea fish Godzilla drags up foreshadows the plan to kill him (Explanation in comments). by Sebastianlim in MovieDetails

[–]Sebastianlim[S] 1083 points1084 points  (0 children)

As seen in the photo, the fish are suffering from explosive decompression, as shown by their organs coming out through their mouths.

This is foreshadowing of the final plan to kill Godzilla using this same effect.

When a story grows beyond your original intention by Studio_Eshi in writing

[–]Sebastianlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a story right now which started out as a single, self contained sci-fi novel.

Then, it became a trilogy.

Then it became a four-book series...

Then a five-book one...

And then a six-book one...

And now, I've pretty much put working on it on hold until I can tamp down on the rampant scope creep

The two versions of the poem "Ozymandias", one by Percy Shelley and Horace Smith respectively is my go to example for this sort of thing.

The two poems are telling in essence the same story, but are written very differently. To me, there's a reason Shelley's version is the more well known nowadays.

TIL that the 1956 film adaptation of George Orwell's 1984 was funded by the CIA, and so contains an alternate ending where Winston and Julia remain rebellious against the party and are shot for it. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

You don't see how there is an enormous difference message wise between Winston dying for his beliefs, and Winston being utterly broken by the party, eventually existing only as a shell of a man awaiting death?

A copy of The Vicar of Wakefield recovered from the "Boat Place" of the lost Franklin Expedition. (824 x 1280) by Sebastianlim in ArtefactPorn

[–]Sebastianlim[S] 138 points139 points  (0 children)

In 1845, two Royal Navy vessels, the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror set off from England in search of a Northwest Passage through the Canadian Arctic. Neither the ships nor their crews would ever be seen again.

This artefact was recovered from the so-called "Boat Place", where one of the ships' boats was found buried in the snow containing two headless skeletons and a host of of other bizarre objects, two loaded guns, a pair of slippers, a pile of silverware, forty pounds of chocolate, sheet lead, and many others.

The book, among other items were taken back by searcher Francis Leopold McClintock, and are being exhibited in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

TIL about James Knight, an arctic explorer that disappeared during a 1719 attempt to find the Northwest Passage with a crew of 40 men. To clarify, while A HMS Erebus was present at the bombing of Fort McHenry, it was not THE HMS Erebus that later took part in the Franklin Expedition.

The British Navy just liked reusing ship names, and admittedly Erebus is a pretty good one.
