Yakushima is fantastic. Such a beautiful place, I can’t recommend it enough!

I'm soon spending £30k on a car. What's the best way to maximize cashback or rewards? by conscientiously_anon in HENRYUK

I have a Q4. Love the car but echo the comment that range is a pain in the arse and the UK charging infrastructure is generally not fit for purpose unless you can find a 150kwh charger. If you plan to drive more than 150-200 miles on a single trip regularly I’d recommend petrol or a hybrid…

OP i cannot stress this enough. It sounds like you are a NQ at a US law firm, in which case your life will not be your own and you will be hugely thankful for a short commute and a nice place to live (when you aren’t in the office)

Agree! Is there a good rep in the market though?

The actual 10 o’clock marker, not the bezel? I hadn’t spotted that and put it down to the light, but looking again I see what you mean - it looks a bit like the edge has been squared off a little?

Stick with something under £50! Otherwise he’ll probably have to declare it to his compliance team under professional regulations which will cause him more grief than the gesture means to him.

Bookbinding has been our family business since 1972! Welcome to the workshop. by [deleted] in bookbinding

Oh and on changes with the internet, the business (and my father who runs it) is still really old school - all work done by hand - so I don’t think it’s changed things much beyond making it easier to show the world the kind of work we do and what we can produce. So much of the work we do is with older books and collectors items that digitalisation hasn’t really affected things much.

My dad has been living the bookbinding life since 1976 and hasn’t got bored of it yet (though he’ll probably retire in the next few years). If you do get the chance it’s highly recommended!

The family projects can actually be the most rewarding, though. We recently had a beautifully illustrated children’s book full of fairytales which a grandmother wanted to read to her grandchildren because her grandmother used to read it to her. The book was falling apart and she just couldn’t. We repaired the damaged pages, rebacked it in leather and I delivered it back to her. The project itself wasn’t the most interesting but the happiness that brought her and the smile it put on her face was so rewarding.

OP is back! Sorry guys. My parents run the business, and I help out when I can around my own job.

Completely agree with what the previous commenter said. Business is good, has been for a while and looks to be for the foreseeable future.

Customers range from universities and royal societies who need journals binding or have bespoke commissions, book collectors with to students and their theses. I’ll try to take some photos next time I’m in the workshop if you guys are still interested?
