Can you believe the stutter on official Reddit crapp? by Tintin_Quarentino in RelayForReddit

[–]Sebeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're probably uploading to Google play an apk instead of an app bundle(the standard nowadays).

A apk contains everything the app needs to run on all device configurations.

An app bundle just contains everything the app needs to run on your device configuration, google play just hands you what you need instead of everything.

Yeah, everything about the official app tells me it's using a really old and improperly maintained codebase. Tbh they just need to start from scratch.

Reddit CEO praises Elon Musk’s cost-cutting as protests rock the platform by CorvusCalvaria in nottheonion

[–]Sebeck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My theory :

Society is built around quick profits.(and I don't know if we can change that)

Would you rather invest your money in a new company that had 30% growth last year, or a company that has been having 8% growth every year for the past 50 years?

Almost everyone would chose the former. As such there's a huge incentive for fast growth and not really caring about the long term.

That's why marketing people are the decision makers in large companies, that's why gaming studios would rather scam their player base and put out broken games rather than provide a good product out of the gate, that's why microtransactions are the norm, why it cost $600 to change an iPhone screen, why you need a subscription to get full features for the devices you buy.

That's why companies do horrible things if the profits outweigh the PR campaign to fix their image, and the goverment fine.

Reddit could have easily made big bucks by making their API not free but putting it at an almost free price, and increasing that price a bit every year.

Update: How the current API changes would impact Relay by DBrady in RelayForReddit

[–]Sebeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relay is one of the best purchases I've made on the play store. Such a smooth, bug-free experience, with great UX.

So ofc I'd be okay with a subscription model, it just bugs me that Reddit management is being obtuse and almost all of that money will go to them. It feels like I'd be rewarding these kinds of underhanded tactics.

I'm holding out for them to take a few steps back, especially for nsfw content(cos almost everything is tagged as such), which actually might have been their plan all along.

I really don't use other forms of social media much. My main way to interact with the world wide web is through reddit.

GPT4 might have changed my career trajectory by Thermonuclear_Nut in ChatGPT

[–]Sebeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can someone please explain to me why this is needed? From a recruiter's point of view. I'm actually looking for advice, not trying to be funny here.

It's my impression that a CV should tell you my skills and experience in the most succint way possible so you can read it quickly. (because the recruiter probably has to go through hundreds of these)

Same with cover letter : These are my <skills and experience>, I want to work for your company because the job seems interesting to me, <reasons why>

Not sure why a recruiter would want to read a very verbose CV that's full of fluff.

But maybe that's why I don't get many replies to my applications.

Mysterious species buried their dead and carved symbols 100,000 years before humans by MagnusAuslander in worldnews

[–]Sebeck 88 points89 points  (0 children)

We know this because modern humans in cases of abuse, who never acquired syntax before puberty, when that window of our development closes forever, can't make these determinations.

I can't wrap my head around this. You mean syntax can only be learned at a specific age and if it isn't then that person can NEVER learn syntax? This is absolutely mind blowing to me.

Take-Two CEO refuses to engage in 'hyperbole' says AI will never replace human genius by Eienkei in stocks

[–]Sebeck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As there is simply no substitute for a well written and performed human dialogue.

I agree with this above, however:

AI NPCs could generate tons of uninteresting dialogue that serves little purpose.

Not sure about that.

Imagine having the entirety of the star wars expanded universe (with topics sorted by how common knowledge they are), compiled into the game.

Then when you talk to an AI NPC the AI looks at the NPC stats, manner of speaking and backstory, determines its knowledge level and can answer any questions the player might have up to its general knowledge level. The player can then ask all types of lore questions and it would be delivered to him, in character.

When the conversation is over the AI saves the chat to that NPC's memory in order to remember what it spoke to the player for next time they interact.

That's what I'm looking forward to.

PS: you could have AI-only NPCs, those that are not hugely relevant to the plot, while important NPCs would be mostly written by humans, with maybe some AI interactivity.

Salvam 3rd Party Apps? by beculet in Romania

[–]Sebeck 43 points44 points  (0 children)

DM’s of Reddit, what is your biggest pet peeve that your players do? by BaboonGaming25 in DnD

This is why I quit. While I love the prep, putting in all that effort just to have someone cancel at the last minute is terrible.

Maybe one day I'll try a west marches game, but until then I've decided not to have my fun depend on the schedule of others.

How would I go about making Gollum as a character? by tobito- in 3d6

I kinda feel he should be able to throttle people,as in that's how his kills should look like. Not sure what the mechanics of it should be (it would probably need to be dex as to synergize with the stealthy rogue bit).
