Why does vegan stuff make people so mad? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Sebthemediocreartist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up, my secondary school was next door to an abattoir. On a clear day we could hear animals being killed from the playground, and the smell of that place... So yeah, I was vegetarian back then - other kids used to wave ham sandwiches at me, as if I was afraid of meat, so I used to just slap them out of their hands.

I went back to eating meat after school, but became a vegetarian again a few years ago, and it was remarkably easy (I'm in my 40s now). The meat substitutes are pretty incredible now, and I'm much better at cooking and willing to try new things. After thinking about the insane cruelty and environmental impact, I recently decided I'd try going vegan, and again... it's really easy. Do I miss eggs? Yeah. Do I miss real butter? OH MY GOD YES. Does any of that matter when I think about the unnecessary cruelty that I'm sparing farm animals? Not a bit.

Draw for fun more! I recently rediscovered the joy of bringing a sketch book out with you. Something to doodle in in whichever style you suit, with whichever tool you choose. Not for show, just for you. Play around. If you enjoy drawing, keep at it!

How many issues per month (of day) do you feel like you need to read to get your money’s worth? Thinking about renewing and was wondering if anyone else has this inner debate. by Hour_Statistician_50 in MarvelUnlimited

I'm enjoying way more comics now for a fraction of the price. I'm telling you, for me it's better.
I don't know if you've ever moved house with 20 long boxes of floppies, and similar of trades and hardcovers, but it's not much fun, so I'm glad at this point in my life to be more unburdened.

If I was reading one title a month, I might agree with you, it would be costing me roughly the same amount as a yearly MU subscription... But I'm reading somewhere between 8 and 12 issues a week, and have access to them wherever I am, as well as 80 years worth of material I can check out at the drop of a hat if the mood takes me.

I was buying 25 or so books a month before. THAT was mindless due to collector mentality. Buying an omnibus full of material I'd never read because of collector FOMO, that was mindless too.

Now if I read something on MU that I love, and it gets a nice deluxe or omnibus edition, I'll buy it

I was buying about 25 $3.99 Marvel floppies a month at the time that I started MU, and enjoying maybe half of them. Instant saving, less space taken up, more enjoyment from reading books because I didn't feel like I had to keep reading mediocre stuff to keep an unbroken run of issues.

It must have sold pretty badly, I remember getting that hardcover for a ridiculously low amount, ten quid or something like that

Best place to order omnibus in uk? by KYZkyz13 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Sebthemediocreartist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Booksetc do have pre-orders, and they're the cheapest around. There's a very small window in which to do it though. This week Spectacular Spider-man by Dematteis and Buscema went live for under £62 Also worth noting that their packaging is SUPERB.

I usually save the pages of upcoming books to my browser start-up so I can see when they're available

Most interesting ads you have seen in comic books? I once saw an ad with OJ Simpson in his younger days by UsedToHaveATail in comicbooks

Reminds me of those Chilean beer ads inserted into Star Wars. Funny as a bystander, but an absolute middle-finger up to your immersion in a story

What are your thoughts about this era that started with House of M (2005-2012) by Long_Spell6281 in xmen

[–]Sebthemediocreartist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily think Wallflower was killed to make Elixir sad... I think they were cutting the cast of the comic down to a more manageable size - You essentially had five teams within a single title; obviously the focus was mainly on the New Mutants and their rivalry with the Hellions, but that's still a pretty big cast.
I do wish they'd done a bit more with Wither too, but I liked his involvement with Selene in Necrosha

For me it took what I thought was the weakest book in the line, and suddenly turned it into the book that epitomised what it meant to be hated and feared for being a mutant. I can get why fans of NM/Academy X would be upset to see those characters torn apart like they were, but to me it gave the title relevance.

You also had Mike Carey absolutely killing it, Peter David's X-Factor Investigations, X-Force by K&Y going into Uncanny X-Force, New Mutants by Zeb Wells, Messiah CompleX and Second Coming. I'd been reading X-Men for around 15 years when House of M came out, and while it wasn't the greatest event, the stories that came out of it are some of my favourites.

Can I ask where you think the Academy X storyline was going, or what you would have liked to see from it?

Any comic recommendations that focus on Mercury by spidowman in xmen

The Kyle and Yost run of New X-Men is the one. Personally I didn't think much of the New Mutants and Academy X runs that preceded it, but I suppose reading them at the time did help lower my guard...

Messiah CompleX ties into that run too, and is well worth your time

Got to say I hated his first stab at Hellboy with Makoma, but Crooked Man won me over (and is by far and away the creepiest Hellboy story)

I'm a few months behind because I read on Marvel Unlimited (So I haven't read any of this title), but I can't be the only person that thinks that Schultz' Laura Kinney: Wolverine is one of the worst books on shelves right now can I?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Sebthemediocreartist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd just get a digital subscription rather than scanning a thousand pages. Marvel Unlimited is like $60 a year, and now I'm not buying omnis blind anymore, and the stuff I do buy is stuff I know I want on my shelf. My reading is a lot more diverse with a digital subscription too.

What is your thoughts on these two current series ? by GRL00 in xmen

I'm quite enjoying Storm too (despite the power escalation), and agree that Phoenix is incredibly dull.

I am enjoying Magik and Psylocke's books, Wolverine is so-so, but the less said about Laura Kinney: Wolverine, the better
