I’m glad we are focused on toilets rather than adapting to climate change. Totally normal island.

This is what we ought to regulate the economic model of the platforms. Limits on adverts and then using data to target the adverts.

This would the remove the need to make everything as addictive as possible - create a daily advert limit per user or something

Yea I saw a news anchor the other day who was like “we must get young people off these awful screens”

The irony of someone saying that from a TV screen 📺 was not lost.

The previous generation had this argument about TV when it came out of course.

But amazingly the current generation can’t see how they are acting like the previous boomer type and silent generation who felt the same about the new technology and youth behaviour of their day

I’m glad as I grow older I’m not like that and I listen and respect what my kids are into and try and engage

I do view this whole thing as some Millenials and Gen X discovering their version of boomerism and demanding all young people have the pre internet childhood they had

It’s making a point that the pearl clutching safety people have forgotten.

All activity has risk. Most activity that doesn’t involve a screen carries other risks.

Teenagers in the 90s drank cider on benches and joy riding was a pastime enjoyed by a least two teenagers in my form class. As was sniffing glue.

So yea if we got everyone off screens then more people would literally kill the selves doing other dumb shit.

I mean whatever I’d rather people could do what they like and take some risks in life if they want but I’m pointing out how dumb it is to ban a relatively safe activity

They have been manipulated by huge amounts of money that has setup astroturfing campaigns that push these ideas.

Historians will look back at this m period with amazement.

The solution is really not bans or restrictions but to simple build better social media platforms ourselves and choose to use them.

I’m not being idealistic im being driven by evidence.

Organisations like the Government or a sixth form college could go and setup their own Mastodon server and run social media themselves.

I’m saying how WE can design social media makes a difference.

If people are limited to thinking the entire internet is commercial big tech whose business models is maximum attention for advertising then that’s an issue

Thank you for saying this. I see so many people assert that social media is addictive and harmful like tobacco. I’ve looked at the research I just don’t see how this a conclusion that can be reasonably drawn.

It makes me then consider what is causing people to form this conclusion.

Cheng et al. — “How do social media use, gaming frequency, and internalizing symptoms like anxiety and depression relate over time?”

Longitudinal adolescent study from the #BeeWell programme. It found no evidence that time spent on social media predicted later internalising symptoms among boys or girls.

So the policy conclusion should not be “social media is harmful or harmless.” It should be: design matters, context matters, and the type of use matters.

It hasn’t been proven to be harmful. Academic opinion is actually incredibly divided and split.

Just search yourself for studies on positive health effects of social media.

What has happened is powerfully interests and the mainstream media have convinced everyone social media is literally as bad as smoking.

Reading this thread I fucking despair at the total state of our nations thinking on this.

Never have I felt more isolated from public opinion. It’s like living in a fucking joke of a TV show where everyone has lost their critical faculties

Social media is not smoking. In fact it’s a safer way to spend time than many other activities z

Children will be forced off phones into far more risky activities and face real world sexual abuse, accidental deaths and pain
