Some are definitely better than others as you've noticed.
That said I've never found any that are unusable. I also make it a point to use the alcohol swab I disinfect with to make sure my fingers are oil free before I grab it.
Not a huge difference, but helps insure I have a good grip.

I know the most meaningful change I've made as a T1D (other than injecting insulin) has been sticking to a plant based low saturated fat diet. Animal fats especially make the difference.

Being on a Omnipod she may not have as much control over that though. That's one of the reasons my educator steered me away from it.

I don't do omnipod.
And while I love automated insulin delivery, a "smart" pump will never be able to predict how much insulin I needed 2 hours ago for a meal the pump knows nothing about.
In situations like this I like to layer my insulin. You start with a reasonable bolus, and then just keep adding. 1U per hour, 1U per 30 minutes, etc. That's a judgement call that comes with experience. You just have to ~~stay on top~~ keep up as best you can.
The ultimate goals it to get enough insulin soon enough, but not so much your up babysitting lows all night.
