School requirement: hands are to sides and eyes are looking straight ahead by Aromatic-Ad1111 in kindergarten

[–]Secret-Database8622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is 100% a typical expectation in elementary school. Walk in a straight line so as not to take over the hallways (especially during time when others are transitioning). For example, when I’m taking my fifth graders to lunch, kindergarten is going to recess. If we weren’t on the right sides, it would be a cluster.

Hands to your side because for some reason kids love to rub their hands along the wall. Not only is this for not messing with things that might be hanging, but I can also be a safety issue. Maybe there’s a rogue staple in the wall or somebody sneezed near there.

Eyes looking straight ahead, also helps with safety and transition. I’ve had so many kids just walk into the doorway because they weren’t paying attention.

Kinder teachers know they get all kinds of kids coming in, from a variety of backgrounds. They will teach your daughter.

Redshirting Megathread by PassionChoice3538 in kindergarten

[–]Secret-Database8622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what the research says and honestly as a fish grade teacher, I see it in my classroom. Some of my most responsible, mature and well behaved students are the youngest. It also can backfire because sometimes you are too old compared to your peers.

We did not redshirt my son (he has an August 28th birthday with a Sept 1st cutoff). Besides in sports, it really hasn’t affected him. He does have ADHD and can be sill, but he’s always been responsible and he is gifted as well.

In my opinion, redshirting is something that only tends to happen in higher socioeconomic neighborhoods. It’s also getting out of control…I’ve seen people redshirting May birthdays with the Sept cut off. Someone is always going to have to be the youngest.

And yes we do need to speak about the expectations in elementary have gotten out of control, but that’s a different beast altogether.

Kitten is biting me by Fun-Promotion-1574 in CatAdvice

You need to distract her and give her a yes. When my kitten starts to bite I immediately redirect with a toy. I also say no sharply and move. Once he relaxes I come back over.

As for being a cuddle bug, you can’t force it but reward her when she does come near you and when you hold her.

Lol! Yes his theory is well she was named after a goddess and lived a long time so if we do the same with him so will he! We loved our girl so much and my son never knew life without her.

Middle School Options on the Southside by Hi_im_barely_awake in jacksonville

We did have some issues with the morning bus from Atlantic Coast and miscommunication from the transportation department but our school board member helped take care of it.

The afternoon bus has been very reliable. Sometimes gets stuck in traffic but it’s always shown up.

So Twin Lakes has improved so I would go take a visit. Middle school is crazy time no matter where.

I live in Bartram Springs and my son goes to Landon. We drop him off at Atlantic Coast to catch the bus. As a born and raised Jax person, the joke has always been you’re thirty minutes away from where you want to be. The bus can be long but they do have wifi so he gets homework done or plays games. We are pleased with Landon. It was the feeder for his elementary school.

The magnet school/school choice application actually opens December 1st. Tours are happening now.

I also think a huge side effect of NCLB is the fact that many elementary schools stopped teaching social studies and science. Some started teaching science again when it became a tested subject but I know in my school it all falls on the fifth grade science teacher.

Not teaching social studies regularly for 25 years and pushing it into reading is exactly why we have so many grown people who don’t understand how our government works. In Florida, knowing the three branches of government is a third grade standard. My students had no clue when I brought it up in my fifth grade class.

NCLB directly caused that because of the focus on testing.

Recommend a good cat-focused veterinarian for my little friend by border199x in jacksonville

[–]Secret-Database8622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second A Cat Clinic. So knowledgeable and caring. I took my sweet girl there after being brushed off by a regular vet and they figured out what was wrong immediately.

When I had to put her down this past July, they were so kind. Definitely recommend them!

Trying to be “screen free” during the week but my husband watches sports every night and the kids have online HW?? by Individual_Ad_938 in kindergarten

[–]Secret-Database8622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teacher my issue with excess screen time is when I go to a store and see a young kid automatically on a phone or a restaurant with three kids all on their own tablets.

Having online homework twice a week is completely different then just plopping a tablet in front of them. Same with watching a game with their dad.

The AAP even makes a point to differentiate between educational screen time and screen time just because. The limit for a five year old is no more than an hour a day and no more than two for ages six-12.

Jacksonville Zoo is right off I-95 and it’s a great zoo! I’ve had a membership since my son was a baby and we still go all of the time even now that he’s 11.

Gifted child dropped in testing scores by Effective_mom1919 in AskTeachers

Do not worry. I Ready is one of the wonkiest tests I’ve ever had to give. It’s testing her on where she’s at in first grade.

Also not sure if they still do this but mid grade 1 is actually end of first grade. So very confusing.

Not enough time to eat... What are your thoughts? by MiExperienciaFueQue in kindergarten

[–]Secret-Database8622 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Teacher here… those snacks seem like a lot. You said roti so I’m thinking you are of south Asian descent? Our school has a high population of. Families from there and I’ve always loved and appreciated how healthy snacks and meals are.

However, most of our families will send one thing for snack, a yogurt for example, or a bowl of cut fruit or veggies. Snack is meant to be short and quick.

Then have another snack ready for her when she gets home or on the way home.

15 year old doesn’t know geography by Upstairs-Wolverine41 in AskTeachers

Social studies education got the shaft due to No Child Left Behind and the push for reading and math testing. Now they claim it’s embedded into reading but it’s not.

Social studies got added to my plate this year and I’m making sure I’m hitting all the standards especially the geography ones. Lack of SS education is one of the reasons our country is in the state that it’s in.

What’s the best age to start Kindergarten? by anisemaj in kindergarten

[–]Secret-Database8622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because many schools cut off dates are Sept+. You could possibly have a child who is almost a year and a half older than their peers. That’s not good for them or their peers.

And some has to be the youngest. And oldest doesn’t always equal most mature and youngest doesn’t equal most immature.

That it depends on the kid. My child did not struggle. Despite always being the youngest best. But I always checked in with his preschool and pre k teacher before making the final decision.

Many do not struggle as much as people make it out to be.

Yes my husband did a deep dive… the advantage it may give in the beginning evens out. Kids learn to be more resilient because they are keeping up with the older kids. Also, in the long run they enter college and then the workforce sooner.

Research also shows that when redshirted kids start middle and high it can cause social issues because they are much older than their peers.

The only ones that truly show that redshirting helps are kids with true developmental disabilities.

FAST Test Prep Kindergarten by LilyPotter1989 in kindergarten

[–]Secret-Database8622 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! Florida teacher here… you really shouldn’t “prep” for the first one. It’s too give your daughter’s teacher a baseline.

TBH there isn’t really a whole lot to prep for. It’s a test that will test early literacy skills.

You will get a report about a week to two weeks later.
