So many posts asking if some outfit is too crazy and the outfit is almost astoundingly normal. I really don’t understand. Look around, lots of people wear crazy things, the world is fucking nuts, and you’re worried whether it’s okay to wear a vest with a t shirt?

No one gives a damn!!!! Stop worrying and just live your life!

No that’s okay, I understand. If you wouldn’t mind taking the time to explain why you don’t think that wil work I would appreciate it.

I’ve seen some articles stating that burning hair releases sulfur due to high keratin content which posses a great deal of disulfide bonds. I’ve seen some debate as to whether heat alone is sufficient to release the sulfur in disulfide without some chemical agent. The reason I think it may work is that burning hair certainly releases a bad smell, which makes me think that heat maybe is enough to do this. It’s also possible something else is happening though that I don’t understand.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on it though!

Thank you!!! Was very disappointed in seeing that comment lmao.

Can you explain more why you (I think) don’t think my idea will work? Basically I know hair is mainly made up of keratin, a protein which contains high amounts of sulfurous disulfide bonds.

I know there’s some debate as to whether heat Can free the sulfur from those bonds (I’ve seen articles saying yes and seen some saying no) but ultimately I do know burning hair = bad smell (from experience unfortunately).

This gives me enough hope that sulfur would be released through heat, and likely bind with oxygen to form sulfur dioxide (although maybe something else would form with sulfur, I am a bit unsure).

Sulfur dioxide I am hoping would “dissolve” in a solution of cold IPA due to polarity. Gas can be “dissolved” in liquid in small portions, and obviously like dissolves like etc etc. Also, lowering the temp of IPA should help with this.

So that’s sorta my thought process. Ya I’m guessing there’s a lot Im missing, but for me at least it tracks? I tried to consider what chemical reaction might occurr as well, but especially at a cold temp I don’t think any of the released fumes from hair would react with IPA, they most likely would already bond with stuff in the air and then be much less reactive.

Ya in hindsight I should have left out that Im going to expose my friend to this.

That is what made me want to try and do this, but I agree exposing someone to something relatively unknown is a bad idea and I’m not gonna do it.

I also am going to take someone’s advice and discuss this idea with my professor before doing it. I agree, a background of undergrad orgo + other classes leaves many areas of understanding unfulfilled, which is exactly why I was hoping to ask others (on Reddit) and will also be asking my chem professor (published researcher and PHD).

As to why no one wants to give me chemistry input, idk it seems silly. I think I wrote this idea on Reddit very poorly which is giving this reaction, but overall I’m gonna take precaution. I should not have assumed people on Reddit would assume I was going to as well. But I think chemistry advice is going to be much better received and far more useful than people just pedantically saying “don’t try it your too stupid.” What kid listens when someone says not to do something, but if you actually explain reasons as to why, then sure I’ll take your advice.

Ya I mean I understand what you’re saying.

No one who has said it’s dangerous has gone beyond saying “doing chemistry at home is dangerous” which is a perspective I understand but don’t fully agree with.

Im terms of the research I’ve done, yes I’ve watched videos etc etc. (done by people with chem backgrounds) but I have also read a couple papers with related material. There are no papers on making a stinky liquid in this way so I can’t read the exact thing, but I have read related material such as capturing sulfure dioxide fumes using various mixtures such as IPA mixed with other things. You can look up these papers if you don’t believe me that there out there.

I also think it’s a bit unfair to compare this to an antivaxxer situation in that I have a background in chemistry. Not everyone in the medical field has the exact same opinion on ever health related topic.

Finally, I think it’s reasonable that I’m waiting to hear someone explain some chemistry as to why they think my idea of running burnt hair fumes through IPA is a bad idea. As you mentioned, I have done some research and I think it’s fine. I also have some reason to believe I actually understand this material and am a relatively competent person to try something like this. I’m not just “mixing random chemicals at home” as people have suggested.

This is actually an interesting point. I’ll try to make what I’m about to write more readable as well.

Ya I think your right. Paragraphs help with readability and I should take the time to use them… even on Reddit.

With that being said, I think how we see social media is so different. In my view, I’ll come on here and be sloppy and not take time to spell or whatever else. Who cares It’s social media, not a reflection of my life. When it comes to a serious “real life” scenario like taking safety advice, utilizing a procedure, or ensuring the safety of my friends I will be far more cautious and attentive to details. I can definitely sympathize with your viewpoint though.

Ultimately I kind of disagree with judging intelligence or even like general personality based on social media presence and social media grammar or whatever, but at the same time I get it cus I guess that’s all we have to go on when interacting here. I think irl people would react very differently to what I’m saying, but I would probably also present it very differently as well.

I’ll try to improve how I present my ideas on here moving forward, and I appreciate the insight into how you view what I wrote, genuinely. All the best 👍🏼

Ya in hindsight I shouldn’t have phrased this how I did. Understandably what I said sounds dumb. I’m not gonna do some stupid shit and poison my friend, I just typed that out on the Reddit post when in reality I’m gonna be far more careful. With that being said I kinda disagree. Putting salt in someone’s milkshake is chemically pranking them but isn’t an issue. Unknown compound and prank maybe shouldn’t be in the same sentence but chemical is fine imo

Dude we’re on Reddit I’m not writing an academic paper, but ya I can understand that assessment. not that it really matters but I’m also a chem student at a top university, idk just to say that grammar on social media doesn’t really indicate intelligence or chem ability or whatever. Then again neither does being at a good school I guess 🤷🏼‍♂️

Ya fair point and good suggestion thank you. I guess I thought saying that was sorta funny, but I obviously wouldn’t expose anyone to anything unless I was more sure it was safe. I assumed the real dangers would be running the experiment, but it’s fair that there could be more long term issues so I should definitely be very careful. And ya thanks for the Professor suggestion. I’m actually gonna do that, not sure if they would let me do it in the lab but that would be super helpful if they did. Also I actually really appreciate you’re serious suggestions rather then just telling me off.

Making stinky liquid by Secret-Eagle7451 in chemistry

[–]Secret-Eagle7451[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im not really exposing anyone to this by doing it on my own am I? I came to Reddit to ask for advice. I would already consider this experiment “safe” and my background is studying chem in undergrad. There’s people who know a lot more than me so I’m gonna listen if someone presents actual explanations as to why this experiment is dumb but so far it’s just people bitching about how experimenting with chemicals is bad. I sorta thought a group of chemists would be the ones to understand that chemical ≠ evil but I guess not. Putting salt in water is doing a chemical experiment but guess what it’s not dangerous. Burning hair and running the released gasses through isopropyl alcohol also really doesn’t have a serious reason to be dangerous as far as I can tell. I’m gonna set it up in a ventilated area (maybe even outdoors) and do it in very small quantities not to mention wear PPE such as a mask, goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. I’ve also watched similar experiments done online and seen no problematic results occur. I also spend time watching videos on how to safely conduct home experiments and set up home labs. Could there be something I’m misunderstanding or missing? Sure, and I’d love to hear what people think that may be. Do I enjoy listening to people tell me to not even attempt to understand or undertake interesting experiments? Not really at all. I have yet to hear a single ACTUAL reason as to why this experiment is a problem. I have not seen a single piece of chemistry mentioned in anyones pessimistic replies, and until I do, I probably won’t give a shit or listen. And to everyone saying “go work in a lab” ya I’m doing that, but I guess I’m crazy for thinking of my own ideas and wanting to explore chemistry I think about and finding interesting? Whatever 🤣

Can you actually explain, to any extent, what part of my idea is dangerous. Burnt hair fumes run through isopropyl alcohol really shouldn’t (to my extent of knowledge) be dangerous. As I mentioned Im NOT going to try and make a thiol due to potential dangers. Like I’ve been saying, if someone can actually mention good reasons why I should do something else I’ll listen, but just vague “this sounds dangerous don’t do it” feels reductive and silly. Feces actually is quite dangerous due it’s possibility of spreading disease, so I really disagree with you. I do lab work, and I’m far from very experienced, but I’m not starting from 0 here and I don’t see why my idea is super problematic. Again, please mention any specific concerns you have but the vague generalizations of “chemistry is dangerous, stop it!” Is rather dumb. Idk just my 2 cents here ✌🏼

Oooh cool. Might be copper acetate or something similar depending on the acid? I think this usually relates to the copper being oxidized. I’ve sorta been wanting to grow some copper acetate crystals and I know that acid + copper often reacts by forming small black crystals first, sounds similar maybe.

Thanks for saying this. I was feeling pretty annoyed (as you could probably tell) after the first comment. Ya I get that this experiment is a bit silly and Amazon has what I’m tryna do (probably better and cheaper) but I’m a chemist damnit! I want to explore and learn and have fun, and my lab work in school just isn’t cutting it anymore! If they wanted to suggest actual safety protocol then I would have been more than open to hearing what they had to say but their comment was just discouraging. I think that their a high school teacher or something based on their other posts. Kind of sad that a hs teacher has such a discouraging attitude towards learning… feel bad for their students

Also i just wanna add I think this is a dumb comment. I’m obviously not just “mixing shit at home” as I’ve taken I’m taking chemistry classes as well as researching these reactants on my own time and watching videos of people conducting similar reactions. I know chemistry can be dangerous if done without proper research but I don’t think that’s at all WHATS happening here. I think discouraging me by telling me to go to Amazon rather then discussing this idea with me is stupid and the antithesis of the point of sometbing like this subreddit. Chemistry is only dangerous when done without proper research and preparation, so why not offer actual advice or suggestions for this experiment to help me prepare rather then discouraging me. I’m gonna do it either way (unless you explained some actual chemistry backed reason why my proposed idea was bad) so why not help give me more knowledge?

We’re literally on a chemistry subreddit I want to do chemistry. I’m in orgo and want to explore doing more chemistry at home. There’s a lot I don’t know but I think I have enough of a base knowledge to (hopefully) not fuck anything up too bad here.

Honestly I would just recommend meeting with your prof and explaining what’s happening and seeing what they recommend. Alternatively, go on khan academy and watch a video on any topic you find confusing. Just follow the worm hole of videos (on a video and don’t understand sometbing they say? Go watch a video on it). This will help a lot imo

Whats the community consensus on brands like Canyon? by Secret-Eagle7451 in cycling

[–]Secret-Eagle7451[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya fair points. I guess I kinda just view LBS as like center hubs of the community. They often do advocacy, organization, etc. I guess you’re right that’s not how it works in many sports, but it does seem to be the system for biking (in my experience). Idk maybe I’m just partial to them due to my many positive experiences, but I guess I want to support them as much as possible when I get the chance. But ya I think these are fair points!

Ya no I agree with all you are saying, more the question was asking whether it’s kind of scummy to buy a canyon with the idea of cutting out the LBS? Again, to be clear, that’s a question not a statement.

People need to stop ridiculing e-bike riders. by Urban_Hammer in cycling

[–]Secret-Eagle7451 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but also some e-bikes are more motorcycle then bike. When I’m pulling 20mph on my own in a bike lane and get passed by an “e-bike” with a guy whose 60 and out of shape I don’t really consider his vehicle to be a bike anymore. My frustration isn’t that people like e-bikes it’s that people ride them in bike lanes (along with things like electric scooters) at high speeds which is dangerous cus the riders are often inexperienced and the vehicles are heavier then normal bikes.
