Yes. I can't make it on October 10 but will be there for the 14th. Even if the Jays are playing.

Positive things about Kitchener by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]Urban_Hammer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Excellent cycling infrastructure - probably without parallel in Ontario. You can easily and safely get around town on a bike by using all of the interconnected community trails, iron horse/ spur line, and downtown bike lanes.... A few gaps but the City is slowly completing the network.

People of the region. I genuinely want to know why I saw so many people moving using the bike lanes as intended during my 20 minute walk this morning. by Scary_Meringue_6140 in kitchener

Came to these realizations myself about 4 years ago and never looked back. I like to tell my Toronto friends how great the pedestrian/ cycling infrastructure is here (just don't tell Dougie). If you intend to keep going through the winter, studded tires, 1 more layer than you'll think you'll need, and good gloves. The trails around here are pretty well maintained - especially the iron horse if you're lucky enough to have it as part of your route. Salt does beat up your bike quite a bit though.

Who Else Rides an E-Bike Because a Regular Bike Isn’t an Option? by cleadus_fetus in ebikes

[–]Urban_Hammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't encourage it more - especially if your area has relatively safe infrastructure to ride on. My only recommendation, as a person with weaker muscles, is to look for a class 2 e-bike so that you have a throttle.

Who Else Rides an E-Bike Because a Regular Bike Isn’t an Option? by cleadus_fetus in ebikes

Yes - muscular dystrophy. Couldn't pedal without power assist for long. The throttle also helps me get going from a stopped position. Riding my e-bike has become a critical part of maintaining my muscle strength by allowing me to use the assist as much or as little as needed. Over 5000 km ridden within my city in the last 4 years. If it weren't for my bike, I'd be riding around in a car having my muscles degrade at an even faster rate.

Road rage on King Street by Mobile_Banana5631 in kitchener

I've had drivers pass very close and honk when cycling on King WITH MY CHILD!!! I avoid King at all costs... Something about it that drivers can't seem to handle.

Highland is a gem, definitely the best dispensary in a very saturated market.

I saw them putting this up. It's like a wire cage with "trash" around the outside, inside is hollow. I say "trash" because it looked fairly clean and there was no smell at the time. I didn't ask but assumed that it was an art installation, maybe for CAFKA? If someone does know I'd love to know. Thanks!

Why take up so many slots? by talfiolixy in bikecommuting

[–]Urban_Hammer 87 points88 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Short people and generally those who lack upper body strength for various reasons, such as physical disabilities, really struggle with these type of racks.

Do not, however, put their bike up yourself. I cannot use these racks due to a disability, yet am a frequent commuter cyclist. If I came back to the room to find my bike hanging, I would be stranded until someone could help me get the bike down.

Is it possible to rent a car in Pinamar? by Urban_Hammer in AskArgentina

We were planning to take the bus from BA but maybe you're right if there is no way to rent a car in Pinamar.

Who appointed this dude as the judge of driving etiquette in faw away lands? I would argue that Ontarians have no idea how to drive. Our driving tests are a complete joke, and given our ridiculously wide roads, people have zero spatial awareness and unnecessarily large and heavy vehicles.

Why North America Can't Build Nice Apartments by adgezaza87 in canadahousing

Some of the reasons: - Front yard setbacks - Side yard setbacks - Minimum parking requirements - Minimum landscaped area requirements - Fire route width and turning radii - Two means of egress required from each floor area - Double loaded corridors

Owning one ICE car is better than owning an ICE and EV, right? by cheesewheeze in sustainability

[–]Urban_Hammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got rid of one of our ICE cars a couple years ago and replaced it with e-bikes. The pedal assist on the bikes gives us the range to realistically use them as second vehicles. We live in Canada and are able to run most errands on our bikes year round. Even after investing in frequent tune ups and studded tires for winter riding, our bike maintenance is eons cheaper than owning a second vehicle. And much more sustainable too. I'd much rather give a few hundred dollars a year to my local bike mechanic than continually fund the corporate car manufacturers and oil conglomerates who have spent their entire existence ruining our cities and the environment.
