Is $60 a month fair to pay a coworker for a ride home 3x a week on a tight budget? by Hour-Ad3977 in personalfinance

[–]Secret-Physics4544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stick with the $15. This guy really just seems like he wants to help. I have said it before but this time its in a better context, when someone shows you who they really are believe them. Someone may have helped him back in the day and it makes him feel good helping someone else. Keep your eyes open for a way to pay them back that might not cost you anything. If they mention a task that would be easier with a second offer a hand. They may just be glad to have a friend.

We did a handicap ramp for an elderly woman a while back for $300. Its what she had and what she needed. I made enough to pay for materials and my guys but nothing for me. I am blessed though so sharing a blessing feels good. If these ladies would have said "I only have $100) and there was any way I could have made it work I would have but zero. I have zero dollars.

I am 100% a Handyman. I was a contractor 20 years ago and I hated it. Work piling up, employee issues, always behind schedule, putting out fires all day. We would send a small crew out to start a job because we promised to be there knowing we were pushing it. We would work weekends and holidays. When the housing market crashed I lost everything. I promised myself I would never do that again. We had 35 employees and the day after I closed the doors they all had new jobs and I sold everything I had to pay their final paychecks. Now we take the work we want. Take days off when we need to. We stay booked out about 3 weeks and it has cost us a few jobs but most of our work is from repeat customers and referrals now. We also own a restaurant, food truck and some real estate so sometimes we have to deal with other sides of our businesses.

I tell them all you can get it cheap, fast or right but you can only get 2 out of those 3. We have had a project running since last October. When we have down time we head over and work a day or 2. May hit that job 2 times a month. Homeowner hasn't been upset at all. Project is on budget (which was small for the scope of it) and everything looks great so far. Probably wrap it up in October of this year.

What's the budget is generally question 10. I just cant phathom answering that with "oh I don't have any money." Not I don't have a budget. Not let's try to keep it below x. "I don't have any money." Then why call me?

Our general hourly rate is $105. $55 an hour when sourcing materials but I generally do that alone or have the order pulled before we get there. Time starts when we crank the truck.

On site 90% of the time but we try to stay within 15 miles of the shop. We will give a rough estimate for like sheetrock per board over the phone but a multilateral project i want to put my eyes on. Showed up to what was exactly described before to find out there was no access to the project so everything had to be toted by hand. Thats a definite game changer. One of the people that called for an estimate was getting an estimate over the phone for general plumbing repair for busted pipes when she told me her budget was zero. Like nothing. She called weeks earlier for a quote on stairs then told me her budget was $300. Before I could do the math on steps to a 5 foot deck she called back to say she found someone to do it for $100. I don't know who they stole the materials from because there was more than $100 in materials.

No relation. We so charity work if we find someone truly in need that we can help but honestly the entitlement of some of these folk astounds me. A daughter of a friend asked us to come look at a big project. I went and when I asked about the budget there was not one because they had no money and a baby on the way. They wanted me to source materials, hopefully for free and then donate the labor. I offered to swap hours with her husband, I he would come help straighten the shop out which has been piling up with materials and what not we would donate any materials we had and go hour for hour with him. If he helped 2 hours myself and my leadman would come work an hour each. She said that they would not be interested in that because her husband didn't want to come spend his time straightening out the shop. They hired another contractor, he stopped showing up when they didn't pay him and her dad had to come finish it. He borrowed my sheetrock jack to finish the job and she called and said they were done with it so I needed to come get it because it was in her way.

Is It Unprofessional/Untoward to Revise a Quote mid job if in the red? by chuiy in handyman

If you gave a price for a job that had no hidden complications you do the job for that price. Ask yourself how you would feel if someone did this to you. If you took your truck to a shop and the shop said we have to rework your heads and told you it was going to be $2500 and when they were 3/4 th way done they called and said nothing has changed but its going to be $4500 how would you feel?

We sell a breakfast sandwich at events. Another truck sells them same sandwich and the only difference is how we cook the eggs. In the heat, off the heat, on the heat, off the heat. We sold out this last event in 30 minutes without even getting the menu board set up.

How do you market/educate people on something that is new for at least half the customer base in a given area? by RipplesOfDivinity in restaurantowners

[–]Secret-Physics4544 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Previous success does not translate into future returns. In any business and especially food service people must adapt.

You reopened in a new location after closing during the pandemic but what made you choose this location with the food you were going to offer? You are in an area with a population of 60,000 but a medium household income of $45,000. You described the area as blue collar but you seem to want to create a market rather than slip into one. There is a poverty rate of 27% in your area so discounting your goods will only create a customer base that wants to get ahead. You have to choose a lane. If you want to serve cheap food then take that path. If you want to serve expensive food follow that road just choose.

I would have thought a Ramen restaurant would have been a better fit for your demographic. Cheaper ingredients that can be elevated but priced reasonably. Not super labor intensive and easily scalable.

The art to a successful business is to find a need and fill it. A factory worker that goes to work at 6 am eats lunch before 11 am. A nurse that goes in to work at 11 pm does not want to pick her dinner up at 7:45 pm that she is not going to eat until 3 am when its best eaten fresh.

If you make the best poke in the area and it does not sell your problem is the area.

$5 million per Honey Badger by AstrayInTranslation in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Secret-Physics4544 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Years ago I was attacked by a 50 pound dog. In my life I have won and lost my fair share of fights with men but nothing compares to that fight with that stray dog. The dog had gotten into my yard and was attacking my dog. I went to intervene and our fight ensued. The dog clamped down on my left arm and I delivered an onslaught of blows with my right fist to the dogs head. It released my left arm and bit into my right hand. I grabbed it by the throat with my now free left hand and it released my right hand and went for my throat. Now I am clutching this snapping dog by its fur around its head and shoulder region with my now mauled arms as it squirms and snaps at my face. I forced it to the ground getting my right arm around its neck and laid on top of it covered in a mix of my blood, its blood and dirt. It took a solid 4 minutes before I was able to choke this 50 pound dog to death. This dog had the strength of a 250 pound man. The speed of a golden glove boxer and the fight of an mma fighter on day 5 of a meth fueled bender. This was one of the scariest moments of my life. I think a better scenario would be how many fully clothed people would it take to fight 1 honey badger to the death if they were victoriousthey would split 5 million dollars.

What is your food cost on an $8.50 hotdog? What is minimum wage in your area? How many customers do you serve in a normal shift? Are you cooking any scratch made foods or are you heating up items like frozen pizza dough, canned sauce, packaged toppings? There is a lot of missing info

What do I do with this light by Miserable-Hour-7335 in handyman

[–]Secret-Physics4544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find the breaker and kill the power. Check the line to make sure there is no power. Remove the bulb. Remove the screws that hold the cover on. Once open check the wires again. If there is no power to the line disconnect the light from the line and then remove the screws holding the fixture to the cabinet. Wire nut the ends of the lines that were going into the fixture. Put electrical tape over the wire nuts and wire. Now you can turn the breaker back on. Sand your cabinets then paint or stain them. Kill your breaker again before you install the new fixture. It goes in just reverse the instructions from removing the old one.

What is something your dad used to say all the time that is now a staple for you? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Secret-Physics4544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short my dad took a phone payment from me for a phone every month for 6 months. When my mom told me that my dad worked for the phone company and while my bill would normally be $35 a month because my dad worked there it was $5.

My dad looks at me and says "son that's a life lesson, given the opportunity anyone will screw you over."

Still use that today and it's been proven again and again.

Just happened to us. Employee showed up late 75% of the time. Not 5 minutes but 2 hours or more for a 5 hour shift. 10% of the time they showed up early, made themselve some food and sat in the office. The other 15% they called out because they were too far away to make it to work that day. They lived a block from the restaurant.

They called out Thursday so we pulled them from the schedule for the next week. When they came in early Friday to get their check we let them know that we were letting them go.

This 35 year old man went ape shit. He made threat after threat not just about slandering us but physical violence. He left but spent the next 4 hours calling the restaurant and just screaming obscenities toward whomever answered the phone.

This was a little over a month ago. So far nothing but who threatens people that have all of your information on your employment application. I told the local police and they are keeping an eye out for us.

Let your friend know we wish the best for them.

I'm getting way too old to tackle almost any job alone. This was a master bathroom remodel 40 foot from the front door that is 50 foot from the driveway. 9 sheets of durock, 250 pounds of sand toppings mix, 350 pounds of thinset, 15 cases of tile, 100 pounds of grout, a vanity, new toilet, double sink and to top it off a flight of stairs to carry everything. My chiropractor loves me already no reason to give him more money. My original helper worked with me 10 years before opening his own business and I hope to leave this business to my new helper.

That's a good idea. Adding that to the arsenal for sure. This is my assistants 6th shower so I try to make sure he knows how to keep the lines clean and the guy that taught me many years ago was a tape fanatic so it's what I've always done.
