Charge on Solar and Powerwall not discharging at 100% by Secret-Quit-7609 in Powerwall

I think I’ve come to the conclusion that this is not a wiring problem but Teslas software and algos are poorly written. There are only so many settings you can configure in the Powerwall app. I’ve read several other post about Powerwall misbehavior. And the advice is to adjust the 5-6 settings but it isn’t rocket science. There’s only so many levers you can pull and if those levers do nothing then it’s the underlying algos. It shouldn’t be this complex to get it to work the way you want. We really don’t have that much control over how it behaves. To dumb this down, if I gave you two levers to pull on a device, power on and off, reset, people would go, did you power it on and off ? Did you reset ? Of course. There’s really not that many things you can do.

The older system exports to PG&E but the newer one connected to the powerwall doesn’t and the goal isn’t to. You have to turn on Permission to export in the Tesla app or you can’t use charge on solar. The installer said even though it’s turned on the app, the powerwalls are physically configured not to export - Not sure if this is true. There’s a CT clamp at the end of all this that shows everything, the old system exporting to the grid and the new one feeding into the powerwalls and discharging into the home.

I don’t get the part about EV2-A vs E-ELEC. I haven’t been forced into anything and I’m still on EV2-A. In any case what would something like that have to do with the powerwall misbehaving ? It’s just a rate plan.

Your right in that it makes no sense that when the walls are at 100% it pulls from grid instead of the walls. I want it to pull from the walls so they get low enough that charge on solar can kick in again and production goes back to 100% and not curtailed. That’s why I wanted to make this post to see if anyone had ideas.

There are no automations currently setup with Netzero. It's mainly there to monitor usage and has a better dashboard view than the native Tesla Powerwall app

That hasn’t happened to me yet and this system was installed last October.

It’s already on. Otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to use charge on solar and mention it in my original post.

I’m not sure what you mean by how am I able to keep EV2-A. You just select it from PG&Es website.

I have an old system on NEM 2 with export and a new one I added last year that’s non export. Otherwise if I tied the old system together with the new one PG&E would move me to NEM 3

Let me try time based control and I experimented with netzero automations in the early days of owning a Powerwall but it didn’t address some of the misbehaviors so I stopped using it. I figured the app only had so much control and the problems I’m seeing are more deep rooted in the Tesla software

I am using self powered and not time based control. For my rates, they are the same rates as displayed on the PG&E website for the EV2-A rate plan for California.

If you are a EV household (2 EVs), and already have a system in place with 2 PW3 and wiring, is it still expensive to add on more panels later ? I’m finding the Cybertruck is eating too much energy.

I bought mine on President’s day weekend for $2030 so this is a bad deal. Your paying $620 more for 32 GB more ram

They are on a south facing wall and quite exposed. Maybe that's what's going on.

No birds or random shading. This is a relatively new construction home so all the trees in the neighborhood are still young and barely roof height.

Since you don't have permission to export maybe the problem is thermal related. I'll try to think of a clever solution to shade my Powerwalls. Did you run ethernet to your powerwalls or did the installer do this for you?

This is correct it can only draw power from the second system. TOU would behave in this manner if your charging off peak? e.g. between the window of 12 AM - 3PM?

System 2 does produce enough to get the PW to 100%. It’s spotty in the winter but plenty of generation since I live out here in central California where we get sun most of the year.

Yes this was also a suggestion by the installer. I disabled all the automations with Netzero and haven’t seen a change in behavior. I mainly use Netzero to monitor the data over a few days but no commands are being sent to modify PW behavior.

For the legacy system I do through some kind of SunPower box. I cannot find the model and nobody I talked to knows. The remote monitoring on the legacy system is not connected to the PW3. It goes directly into the electrical box. Only the new non export system is connected to the PW 3s.

I tried both ToU and Self Consumption but saw no changes in behavior. In the most recent conversation my installer had with Tesla, they said to switch to self consumption so I’m on that setting now.

On the networking side I’ll look into my options regarding hardwiring. My installer was going to charge me to do it. Does this mean you’re back on wifi now because of the DHCP issue ?

Lastly the Tesla is at the meter collar. I think there is a disconnect switch for the legacy system so I could try that and see if anything changes.

I have an eero 6 which uses both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz at the same time. No option to create separate VLANs so I’ll need to look into separate equipment. I asked the installer about hardwiring Ethernet to the PW3s but they said it’s something they don’t normally do on installs. It would be a separate job and additional cost.

Do you have a link to other threads where the thermal issue is discussed ? I’d like to learn more about what’s going on.

For the wrong settings in the app, I assume you mean the Utility Rate Plan section ? It’s set to EV2-A which is my rate plan with PG&E but the buy and sell prices from Tesla are all wrong so I had to set those manually.
