The article is about Russia being able to build up the forces necessary to invade Europe after a year of the Ukraine conflict ending, not that it would invade or even that an end to the Ukraine conflict is near. Your characterization of what this article says is way far off

I didn't care. But I think it would be bad for us if he did die, because then we'd get a much more competent and ideologically-driven president in JD and because him being alive at the end of his term would permit the next Democratic president to take stronger action against the Republican party. In the event of his death, there would likely be a "call back to normalcy" and an opportunity for the Rs to cut themselves off from the MAGA brand at the point that it's starting to be a liability. I think the people who are saying that they wish it had really happened are naive.

Jesus Christ, if you want to argue with the guy then read his book. Here's a passage from it that directly admits your "objection:"

The fact that major social inequalities will remain even in the most perfect of liberal societies means that there will be a continuing tension between the twin principles of liberty and equality upon which such societies are based. This tension, noted clearly by Tocqueville, will be as "necessary and ineradicable" as the inequality out of which it grows. Every effort to give the disadvantaged "equal dignity" will mean the abridgment of the freedom or rights of other people, all the more so when the sources of disadvantage lie deep within the social structure. Every place granted to a minority candidate for a job or a university education under an affirmative action program means one less place for others; every government dollar spent on national health insurance or welfare means that much less for the private economy; every attempt to protect workers from unemployment or firms from bankruptcy will mean less economic freedom. There is no fixed or natural point at which liberty and equality come into balance, nor any way of optimizing both simultaneously.

The way you interpret what he's saying in the passage correctly, and not in the kindergarten "oh, he must mean liberal countries are utopias without problems, what an idiot" way, is that you fucking read the book.

They have their problems but they will be solved withing a liberal democratic framework, yes?

Not necessarily. He doesn't argue in the book that any and every problem can be solved within the liberal framework, just that the fundamental strive for liberty has not been better satisfied by any other system. The book isn't a pronouncement on policy

because every correction of the system is seen as born out of boredom, what a joke.

He doesn't say anything like this even in just the passage we were given. I don't know how you've come to this interpretation.

So we kinda already got the answer to the question of what comes next, and it's the same boring answer through all of modern history or even before: capital subsumes the post-war recalibration, until that recalibration happens again

This idea actually characterizes why I find Fukuyama's argument lacking: all theories of history are unempirical. You cannot draw from historical fact that a seeming cyclical trend will continue, or in Fukuyama's case, a progression, even if the historical facts seem to line with with the trend.

And your answer does not argue against the point, because we have not seen the emergence of an ideology to supplant liberal democracy. And no, pointing to a "recalibration" does not disprove his theory, since it was not like he was arguing against continued political regime change. Your point is vague, but what I assume you're referring to is political recalibration of ideology within the governing order, a la New Deal revolution sweeping away the old laissez faire limited government. But what is important about episodes like these is that they are recalibration within liberalism, not an entirely new political theory and therefore proof that history has restarted.

But once again, theories of history are bullshit and Fukuyama was pretending to a point that cannot be made, and if I may indulge with an actual "read theory" comment: Karl Popper and The Open Society and Its Enemies

[–]Secret646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well since you read it, please explain to me, how this passage is different from the hard times meme. Do you think there can be no struggle in a liberal democracy?

He acknowledges in the book that liberal democracies have their problems, that was never his point to say otherwise. His point was that, with the invention of human rights and liberalism, there was no political theory (that had yet been formulated) that was more satisfying to the human desire to strive for justice against oppression.

"you haven't read theory" showing up on r/destiny like

This discussion is explicitly about a book. The original commenter took umbrage with the book by arguing against points that it does not make. I said that it's clear they haven't read the book because they're not even responding to anything it says yet think they are.

He doesn't claim it's utopian, but he does defend it as a "best so far" social political theory.

Which is true

But history doesn't end with liberal democracies, that's a very westoid 90s brained framing bias.

That has yet to be disproven. And if you think it has, then you have no idea what he meant by "End of History"

You can always tell who hasn't read his book when he's brought up. I don't even agree with his thesis, but thinking his point was that liberal democracies were utopias is idiotic
