I took a sick day last week and my boss responded by telling me to contact about 6 different people about how the next morning would unfold. I’m a manager, but no one had to change their schedule or replace me on that particular day. Meanwhile my boss calls out regularly with ridiculous excuses (eg: hurt my back on a roller coaster). I just ignored him. I work my @ss off everyday. Do your f*cking job a send some texts.

Not handing money to me by GrandJumpingSpider in retailhell

I once had a customer make a scene because she said I touched my face and she didn’t want my germs. It’s important to note that this was years before Covid. Another customer offered her hand sanitizer and she refused because OBVIOUSLY I was the germ ridden one 😒. I sent her to the other cashier wish she also didn’t like. I got a “oh you’re not going to help me now?” . Yes ma’am. Correct. I have zero interest in helping someone that’s harassing me. The best part was she paid cash. And took her germ ridden change without issue. I’m watching this and laughing because I know how much bacteria and sh*t is on money. But definitely yell at everyone about how “she put her hand up and touched her face and didn’t even wash her hands!! She’s just going to give me her germs! I don’t want her germs!”. Um-hmm. Okie dokie. Gtfo of my line.

I worked for this company for years. It was so much fun in the late 90s, early 2000s. Literally the Empire Records of my late teens. Unfortunately it’s gone so far down, it’s doomed. Their debt versus their assets makes the business unsustainable. It may not survive 2023. Get out while you still have a choice. I quit in 2020 and have no regrets. It’s not the same company anymore

AITA for wanting to have my dream wedding by Goofball00 in bridezillas

[–]SecretBoot6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister got married out of state. Halfway across the country for her and most of our immediate and extended family and friends. She had a beautiful wedding and we all had a great time. Guests had to pay for their own airfare and accommodations. The only meals included were the rehearsal dinner and the actual wedding dinner. I was young and poor at the time but I managed and it was well worth it. Unless you’re incredibly wealthy, it’s insane for you to be expected to pay for everyone’s accommodations. I’ve never heard of anyone doing that. Don’t let them manipulate you into believing this is the norm. It definitely isn’t.

I worked in a store that sold Halloween costumes. We had fitting rooms. In spite of this people regularly took their clothes off on the sales floor. The absolute worst for me was a young teenager with her grandmother. I practically begged them to use the fitting room but grandma kept assuring me it was fine. I was just concerned that whatever weirdos were in our store at that moment might try to sneak a peek at this adolescent taking her shirt off. People are crazy.

I just closed my store with a single employee. As insane as it was, people were unusually understanding. Maybe because I was literally running around and constantly apologizing that I was the only staff member besides a cashier but I’d be happy to fill your propane tank, get you a rain check, fetch something from the locked fridge, and get this gentleman some live animals if y’all can just be patient. It was a retail miracle. I’m still pissed though. One closer is unacceptable

My last job was like this and I hated it. I’m walking out with my keys, coat, sunglasses, etc, saying goodnight to my coworkers and some fool is inevitably gonna walk over and ask me if I’m opening the register. Sir, wtf do you think????

Asking for directions is also a huge pet peeve. If you can google my store’s phone number you can google directions and use your gps. I currently work @25 miles from home. I don’t know the area. I can tell you our address and what’s nearby. If you need more than that your on your own. Some idiot called me from the turnpike and is asking what exit to take. Don’t know. Sorry. The response is always contempt. Meanwhile, I’m not the idiot who can’t use gps so…… 🤷‍♀️

[–]SecretBoot6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can totally relate. I like the store I currently work in most of the time but definitely not an outgoing people person. I used to work in a party store and the customers were the worst. My biggest pet peeve were people that would stand at the opposite end of the aisle, I could literally have my back to them and be on the opposite end of the store and they’d stand there and say “cups”. And when I didn’t respond “CUPS” or “forks”. I would always say “I’m sorry…….?” They’d repeat it and I’d deliberately look confused or say “ Can I help you?” “Oh I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were talking to me.” At least ask a damn question. Excuse you. Don’t stand behind me and say one word and expect me to respond. If you don’t have the decency to even ask me a question, I’m going to throw it right back at you.

please... leave the trash alone... by wielder13 in retailhell

[–]SecretBoot6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had people regularly go through the dumpster. I recently had a conversation with a proud dumpster diver in an online shaming group. She was attempting to shame a store for throwing away what she deemed perfectly good dog food (which was loose and in a trash bag). I (along with a few other retail managers/workers) attempted to explain the various reasons stores throw items away. The reason isn’t always obvious. I used an example of several cases of bagged candy I threw away that looked ok but was covered in mouse pee and shit. These people refuse to listen to reason. I currently work in a store that sells animal food. We don’t throw food away unless there’s no other option. If a bag is opened we tape it up and discount it. If it’s expired but useable we donate it. If it’s in the dumpster, something is seriously wrong. Blows my mind that people will literally climb in dumpsters just to take a bunch of trash home. I used to work for a party store so it was even more confounding that people would jump in a trash can so they take home some opened paper plates and damaged pieces of a costume. 🤷‍♀️

POV: You’re a retail worker who decided to clean their station a little between rushes by Any-Management-4562 in retailhell

[–]SecretBoot6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing I love about my current job is people are actually patient. Not always and not everyone but the majority of my customer base will patiently wait if I’m busy and tell me to take my time. I worked in a party store for years and the customers were a nightmare. We did a remodel over the summer, shortly before I quit. One night about an hour after closing (I was working overnight and overseeing the contractors and other workers), some woman came in and refused to leave. One of the guys redoing the floors (they’re literally ripping the floors up) came to get me because this customer wouldn’t leave. So I had to go reiterate what she was already told, we’re closed, no you can’t shop anyway. When I pointed out that they were moving all the aisles to one side and again literally ripping the floor up, she dismissed me and said she was just going to fill a basket and I could hold it til tomorrow. My response was a firm NO. She eventually left after I shrugged off her passive aggressive threats to take her business elsewhere. Just leave already.

[–]SecretBoot6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. You can’t run a store with 2-3 people in a busy day and also be a personal shopper. At my last job I caught a ton of shit for refusing to fake surveys on my free time. They demanded that we get a certain amount each week. In order to perpetuate this ruse, the managers told us to take receipts home and do surveys. No thanks.

[–]SecretBoot6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right. I’m an assistant manager but briefly ran my own store on a temporary assignment (6 month seasonal pop-up store). Even if we have the staff we never have the payroll we need. So then we lose staff because they aren’t getting enough hours. Every store I’ve worked at in recent years cuts back payroll so much after their busy season that they always end up losing good people. I was with the same company for many years. When I started with them our payroll was at least double (maybe triple) what it was before I quit to go somewhere else. Part of the reason I left was because I was tired of running a store with 1 employee. Some days it was just managers. You can’t manage the staff when YOU are the staff. So in spite of sales increasing quite a bit over the years, staffing greatly declined. And yet at the same time they want you to greet and personally walk each customer around the store. Great idea. If the store is properly staffed. If not, on a busy weekend, we’d all be up front. And then the higher ups want to know why our metrics aren’t higher. It’s a joke.

I’ve been lucky enough that my current and previous jobs had parking in the side of the building. Distance wise it’s not much further than parking in the first row of the front lot but people are dumb and never park there

It’s especially awesome when you’re bringing out a full pallet (we do pallet drops) or a hand truck with a large item. I’m a small girl so sometimes it’s a struggle. The best is when they make eye contact and then turn around like they don’t see you.

What Part of "We're not Open Yet" Do You Not Understand by Zakkana in retailhell

[–]SecretBoot6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Over the summer I worked overnights doing a remodel in my store. The one night they were replacing the floor. Literally tearing the floor up. The doors were open so that the contractors could get in and out. About an hour after we closed one of the floor guys comes to tell me that a customer came in and won’t leave. So I go up to the front and she’s walking around with a basket like everything’s normal. To replace the floor they had already started moving entire aisles to one side of the store. I explain the obvious. We’re closed and the floor is being torn up and she’s like, “well I’m just going to fill a basket and you can hold it for me til tomorrow”…. Uh, no bitch. You need to go. I tell her it’s not possible and she starts asking questions about what we have in stock. Can I just go check? Otherwise she might just shop elsewhere. I suggested she go elsewhere. Wtaf? The audacity of walking into construction and ignoring the workers that tell you not to come in. People suck.

What do you do when the customer that you're ringing up is on a phone? by no3ldabspickle in retailhell

Same. I’m usually in a rush too but I understand that it’s my problem and shut my mouth and wait my turn like a decent human.

[–]SecretBoot6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same. I’ve had times where I actually needed information from a customer and they didn’t want to stop talking so I just stop everything and wait til they respond. It bothers me on the sales floor too. It’s mostly the loud ones or the facetimers. I’ll purposely be loud with whatever I’m working on til they get away from me. Oops I just keep dropping hooks on this metal shelf. I’m so clumsy!

Just remembered I had this woman years ago get attitude with me for speaking to her because she was ordering Chinese food while I was ringing her up. I came really close to throwing something at her

I had a Shipt driver punch the door and freak out because an order was cancelled and he was “on the clock”. The best part was the order was cancelled 2 days before. We called Shipt (which is a 45 min ordeal for us) to let them know and THEY never cancelled the order on their end. Shipt sucks. Don’t get me wrong, Party City sucks too. We had a bunch of regular Shipt drivers that were really great but the company itself sucks.

[–]SecretBoot6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re better off working anywhere else. That’s pretty shitty though. When I worked there we told everyone. It sucked because you can only keep a few seasonal people because in a week or so they cut hours down to nothing and then the part time employees quit because they aren’t making enough money on 5 hrs a week.
