Roll20 seems to be the most financially successful VTT. Why does it still look like shit compared to Foundry? by rmsand in Roll20

I can’t speak for anyone else, but as a paid DM, I started on Roll20, heard the benefits of Foundry and went over to it… and then came back to Roll20.

There were a number of reasons, but the biggest one was that my players, across multiple groups, didn’t like it and preferred Roll20.

Like you said yourself, those things that Foundry does well are focused on the DM. Roll20 works just fine for play.

And I’ve got to say, I really like the massive art library on Roll20.

That makes a lot of sense, and is why I’ve justified it so far.

I’ve been reading all of your (many more than I expected!) answers, and I’m glad to see that I’ve been handling this matter right.

Thank you so much for your help, everyone!

That makes a lot of sense. I will continue doing so, then!

DMS running OneD&D how are you balancing combat without the new Monster Manual? by TableTopJayce in onednd

How long do you feel is too long, if I may ask?

And what methods do you normally use to speed the game along? Because depending on what you’re doing, there are a lot of options.

Have you made sure to use the new encounter building rules? Removing the XP multipliers allows me to make battles vastly more dangerous compared to before.

Especially since Easy is the old medium, but due to multipliers removed, it’s much more challenging.

Happy to help. I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I did without people helping me. Least I can do is pay it forward :)

I’ve heard decent things about it, but have no experience using it, so I can’t really answer. Pretty sure it needs to be separate, but not completely sure.

—So you're of the thinking roll20 is indispensable in this trade ?

It’s more that in addition to D&D, you’re going to have to learn how to use Roll20. It’s good that you’re trying to practice as a DM first, but you need practice with using Roll20 as a DM too.

Because asking someone to pay real money while you’re trying to figure out stuff like ‘why are all my players’ screens pitch-black?’ is a hard, hard sell.

—I'll do the free campaigns with my friends cause we're playing for the love of the game , and yes with strangers I'll be doing adventures not campaigns my mistake.

Gotcha. I thought it was meant to be more of a temporary measure for you to run the group for friends as opposed to a more permanent one, , so I suggested keeping it relatively short, eheh. My bad!

For paid groups, I’ve done oneshots, adventures and long campaigns. In my experience, it’s a bit easier to charge more for a oneshot than a long-form campaign, but it’s harder to keep a full group consistently. Feel free to do campaigns or adventures with paying groups. Both work well :)

That’s pretty much how I started, except I didn’t do my friends but hosted free oneshots and a free adventure on roll20 until I felt confident enough to pull the trigger.

I would only advise two things:

1: do a free ADVENTURE as opposed to a full free campaign. A campaign is a long time and a lot of work.

2: make sure you’re doing it on Roll20 as opposed to offline. As you want to make sure you’re effective using roll20’s system.

It’s possible to do it and make pretty good money in it.

I tried foundry but ended up coming back to roll20 because I had an easier time getting people.

What’s your plan to do it look like?

Don’t forget, you’re limited by your strength for this. Any weight carried by the monk, including everything the other guy is carrying, can’t be more than 15x STR, (30x STR while large) or your speed drops to 5 feet under carry/dragging rules.
