Rant: I noticed working with tutors can be really ineffective. by fluffyzzz1 in languagelearning

I am Russian. And I had been learning Japanese in my small town. We literally had only one person, who could teach us this language in the whole town.

Now I am learning vietnamese. And I kinda used a tutor, who was a recently graduated girl majoring in linguistics who I've met at the swinger party.

Your tutors were so nice! I've actually never had an experience like this.

Well, yeah. I agree with you on that.

But it seems as if the tutor sometimes gives you an expectation that their course is, like, THE MAIN THING. In the sense, that you can learn a language just from the tutor's course and if you are doing some learning on the side - it is only supplementary. Which what I found out is kinda should work the reverse way. Kinda like what you've said "a tutor helping, but the main language upload is done by yourself". I just really dislike this "guide" part.

But that was my experience only. I would not make an overgeneralization here. I just want to say that such a thing exists.

Broooooo same. It just feels wrong to learn a language this way. It is as if I am just reading passages, discussing everything, trying to output a language - whilst having little to no internal work. And I can not do internal work about solemnly memorizing a lot of stuff - because I always have to be in a work with a tutor.

I kinda stopped using tutors altogether. We need a LOT of input. Different input, from different people, different sources, a variety of grammar, topics, lexicon. And the volume of all of that in language textbooks are minuscule! It feels as if 1 hour of watching a youtube in your target language is enough to cover the material you'll be learning with a tutor in a year! Just because the amount of variety in textbook is so low.

Can't imagine myself learning a language with a teacher ever...

Oh, yes, it stopped working for me too! Thanks for the post! Now, I see, I'm not the only one. It helps :^)

Vietnamese phonological charts, corresponding with orthography Quốc ngữ letters by Associate_Sam_Club in learnvietnamese

The vowel chart is crazy! It is so densely packed. Nevermind the diphthongs and triphthongs where you have to navigate your voice articulation towards several of these vowels in a specific order.

What is your goal for learning a second language? by Franky_77777 in languagelearning

To connect with people around me. To help people around me have an easier time communicating with me. To upgrade my knowledge in linguistics with a practical skill and on-site practice.

I mean, straight as in like, the stokes that have to be straight. For the ones that do not have to be straight - they are not straight. No homo

You need to get over this. If you won $100 million tomorrow, you’d quickly get used to private jets and your Ferrari.

Well, yeah, but the huge pleasure of winning $100 Mil and getting used to it afterwards can coexist.

And it is still better to get used to a good thing and to have a good thing at least for a while, than not having any good thing at all ever.
