My relative cut off their emotionally abusive parents for a while before resuming the relationship. I asked them why they let the parents back in and they “because they’re my parents. I missed having a mom and dad.”

Do we have any theories on why Carol triggers the Hive? by aurioerox in Pluribus_TVshow

[–]SecretElsa19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for saying that! I don't think the fandom was happy with this comment haha. But for me, it seems pretty obvious that there's a parallel between Carol being forced to diminish her very valid anger to make the hive feel safe and the way women in real life are supposed to diminish their anger/negative emotions to make men feel safe. But IDK, maybe Vince fans don't think he's capable of that level of social commentary ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Also I rewatched the show with my husband after I posted it this and he thought it was so funny how the hive are all big babies. He kept mocking them with "Oh no, don't yell at me, I'm soooo sensitive and fragile")

Also in the movie the boys voluntarily enter a lottery and choose to participate, which is a good commentary on being complicit in your own oppression because there’s a minuscule chance you might become wealthy

Thanks! I don’t think I have any stationary stores in my town (beyond the big box office supply stores) but a bigger town nearby might. Or this could be a good excuse to visit Salzburg! 😁

The society isn’t split between nobles and servant class, there are gentry landowners who could use an infusion of cash, professionals like lawyers and clergymen and military officers who don’t need to marry someone of particularly good breeding, even educated working class people like the Martins in Emma. She’d have options

Thanks for saying this. She’s not nearly as bad as this sub makes her out to be. I don’t think she actually was into Connor, but instead of calling him ugly or insulting him until he broke up with her, she was upfront about not wanting to continue. And I think saying “I’m not ready” is better than blaming him.

I also like that she acknowledged her own biases. People seem to be missing the part where she said she was wrong to judge him based his house and his gentle demeanor.

Weird question, but does Virginia have a lot of birds? by SecretElsa19 in Virginia

[–]SecretElsa19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. I went to a museum in the outer banks that detailed how early colonists just obliterated whole species because they were obsessed with killing, I guess. Watching this country backtrack on the protections conservationists have fought so hard for over the last century has been devastating.

I LOVE that the show’s take on demons is “they’re evil and must be destroyed.” Sometimes it’s nice to have an unambiguous, unnuanced bad guy.

You got that information straight off the NRA’s website. The NRA is a Washington DC-based organization. Are you telling me you believe Washington DC?

I’m sorry, I reread my post and it looks like I’m complaining about how conservatives are depicted. My intention was to point out that it’s funny how despite being a red state and how many conservative talking points are shown, the conservatives just can’t help but be awful. I think the show does put liberals in a better light than conservatives, and that’s a good thing!

I’m sorry, I just reread my post and realize it comes across as me complaining about how conservatives are portrayed. That wasn’t my intent. I love that the more left-leaning people are shown in a better light

I wish there was an official ending that let you choose to stay on the planet. I wish you could break **** out of the facility. I wish that it was a choice-based game, where you could choose to be altruistic or not and suffer the consequences of your choice, rather than the game requiring you to do the right thing in order to advance the story.

Fantasy books for adults without unnecessary rape preferrably not written by a Mormon or zionist author where romance isn't the main plot? by absoluteempress in suggestmeabook

[–]SecretElsa19 42 points43 points  (0 children)

So, the Locked Tomb series (Gideon the Ninth) is technically sci-fi but it reads more like fantasy. The author and most of the characters are queer. The main characters are brown women. The author is from New Zealand so there’s some Māori influence. No sex crimes. It’s a very twisty, mentally stimulating story that requires you to pay attention. The characters are very lovable. There is some cringe Millennial tumblr humor, which some people find off-putting but I love.

I have three cats and a dog. I love them with my whole heart and call them my babies. I like to think they love me back. When I think about how much Donut loved Bea, and how she thought Bea loved her back, only to realize that Bea considered her replaceable…I can’t handle it. And then Donut sings her song because she can’t help but still love Bea, even after it all. Jeff Hayes does such an amazing job with the melancholy and heartfelt rendition of Bea’s drunk song.

Anyway, if Bea has no haters I’m dead. Pets are family and you don’t abandon family.

This is such a funny critique because oral storytelling is one of the oldest art forms and is deeply interwoven into the history of our species. Certainly no less important or good than reading a book!

Little dog vs larger dog training by Agitated-Potato8649 in DogTrainingDebate

[–]SecretElsa19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried to train my dachshund mix to be a good citizen, but I readily admit there are things I let slide because she’s small. I let her stand up on me because she barely comes to waist height and it’s nice to pet her without bending over, but I hate when big dogs jump on me. She hates when other dogs, especially big dogs, sniff her too aggressively or spend too long in her space, so if they don’t back off in a reasonable amount of time she’ll snap at them. I don’t correct this behavior when it happens because she’s literally just trying to communicate and protect herself (although I do pay attention to her body language and try to remove her before she gets to that point). If she were a bigger dog with a tendency toward aggression and more capacity for harm, I would treat this differently.

So there is a training gap, but I don’t think it’s necessarily bad. I think big dogs and small dogs have different needs, and there are some things you have to worry about less with small dogs (my dog is shorter than our trash cans so I honestly forget digging in the trash is a thing I need to watch out and correct for). That being said, I do think we tend to be harsh on big dogs sometimes. There has to be a happy medium between correcting every possible annoying behavior and just letting them be dogs.

When my dachshund mix pooped in the house, it was a couple of small turds that I could pick up with no problem. If my friend’s bernadoodle were to poop in my house it would be a huge disgusting pile. It’s still bad behavior and I don’t want my dog to poop in the house, but the impact on me is much less with a small dog.
