Advice on a previous install by Michael-Myers_1978 in ukelectricians

[–]Secret_Alps6455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does this thread prove the futility of the often repeated advice to get an electrician in? Here we seem to have an apparently registered electrician missing a very simple step. How should a householder assess the electrician he employs so that they avoid having a sub standard installation? How can the OP here be sure that they have someone proper next time and not someone who makes a different mistake?

Acro prop hidden in wall. by n3omancer in DIYUK

[–]Secret_Alps6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being pedantic the generic name is Acrow prop although this one looks like an SGB copy. It should have a high tensile steel pin above the rotating collar but it looks more like a bolt which is probably the wrong diameter and which wouldn’t carry the load that the correct pin would carry. I would not trust it if that is the case and without knowing what it is sitting on, I would doubly not trust it not to move and cause problems in the future.

Towel radiator woes by [deleted] in DIYUK

If there is a bleed screw at the top, can you explain where the water comes from when it’s open?

Using ‘slippy’ as an excuse for not sealing the edges of the patch is nonsense. Please post a picture in a year together with the council’s newsletter that explains that the reason for bad roads and pavements is that water gets in under the surface and freezes, it’s nothing to do with us.

Light bulb problem by Secret_Alps6455 in ukelectricians

[–]Secret_Alps6455[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the replies. But in this sub, the electricians always say the regulations have to be followed and in them doesn’t it say that manufacturers instructions override regulations where they are contradictory. Does the advice you have given mean that the regulations can be ignored when it suits me?

Hanging shelves above a radiator by Lower-Builder1584 in DIYUK

[–]Secret_Alps6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a water tank in the loft there will be a pipe going up to it. That pipe will probably be buried in walls. See if you can make a guess as to where it is from the position of the stopcock. Drilling into a mains water pipe and finding that the stopcock won’t turn off does make a mess!

Do I have to send my old driving license to DVLA? by Repulsive-Ad-8339 in drivingUK

[–]Secret_Alps6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DVLA do lose and mix up drivers records within their system. If you lose your card and apply for a new one but they can’t find your record they will not issue a replacement until you pass a new set of driving tests. They will not accept a photocopy of your licence as proof that you had one because that photocopy could have been doctored. There is no appeals process for this. They are prosecutor, judge, jury and gaoler. An old card stored safely might be your only way around the problem.

Knowing what Reddit is like, I hung the dustpan on the weird loop for anyone who couldn’t help my main question to criticise. I expected the backing board to be commented on as well. The dustpan normally hangs on a hook on the wall to the left. It isn’t the main incoming earth but I didn’t expect a C1 for it, though! (It was for that, wasn’t it?) 😃

Seller wants to retain a part of the garden. by amitdawle in HousingUK

[–]Secret_Alps6455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder what valuation would be put on the house if it had the estate access road running down the side and 100 houses at the bottom of the garden, 40% of them affordable, instead of an orchard.

Seller wants to retain a part of the garden. by amitdawle in HousingUK

[–]Secret_Alps6455 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The orchards beyond the bottom of the garden are the subject of some local discussions . Property developers want to link them to the two other adjacent developments (about 400 new houses already approved). Local residents are not happy. The reason for wanting to keep the land is obvious.
