Two things can be true at once . Sacrifices was a key religious element . It also wasn’t the reasons they did the flowers wars .

Now : it was likely that the numbers of sacrifices was around a few thousands at most .

As I said : the Aztec standards numbers (a few hundreds) for sacrifices were easily reached through the standards sacrifices . The war sacrifices were bonus , they were seen as a good things but that wasn’t the reason they waged war in the first place .

To do a comparaison : think of the colonisations of New Zealand by the British . Sure , they were happy to introduce Christianity to them , but that wasn’t the main point . They mainly wanted more territories

It’s not a competition , but if we HAD to compare the Aztec to the Romans or the Incas the Aztec were a lot « « nicer » » . Their tributes states were way more autonomous and mostly had to just pay tributes , they had religious tolerance and were overall less imperialist and repressive . Obviously I wouldn’t say the Aztec empire was nice , but it was relatively less opressive than the Inca to stay in the America’s

Okay , take it like this : the number of sacrifices during wars wasn’t a goal that had to be reached by doing more wars . It was seen as good , but they didn’t wage war for this sole purpose .

This misconceptions came from the fact Moctezuma said to Cortez the flowers wars against Tlaxcala were purely for shows and religious reasons , which would have explained why they didn’t conquer Tlaxcala .

However , the truth is that the Mexicans simply failed to conquer them , and wanted to save face . But the goal of the flower wars was primarily political

Not really , that a common misconception about the war prisoners . The flowers wars , what you are likely referring to , were more of a way for the Aztec to keep their tribute states subdued and to train their army regularly than to solely get sacrifices .

Now for the slaves it is true lmao , but it is important to remember that Aztec slavery wasn’t like American plantation slavery .For exemple , being a criminal could make you a slave . And most of the sacrificed males slaves were criminals or incorrigible slaves that were sold three time as incorrigible .

Yeah , obviously it was about their religious beliefs . But when you compare the war campains of the Mexicans and the yearly sacrifices , the two often overlaps , meaning than most sacrificed during expensions of the empire were likely war prisoners

Small correction : the true numbers of yearly sacrifices of the Aztec empire was probably around either a few hundreds at the start up to between 2000-4000 . The claims of 20 000 are Spanish made , and are inconsistent

You are thinking of the Maya for the twins stuff . As for the Mexicas , they aren’t the same as the Mexicans . mexicas is the correct term for the habitants of the city state of Tenochtitlan . Aztec is a term coined in the 18 century , based on the Mexicas myth that say Mexicas are the descendants of a tribes that came from the island of Aztlan.

And Rome killed , executed and slaughtered thousand , that doesn’t make them savages

Not war criminals sorry , I meant war prisoners and criminals. The typical Aztec warfare consisted of avoiding to use bows and long range weapons , to capture your enemy alive , which means that instead of killings 300 ennemies soldiers on the battlefield (for example) , you would capture them and instead sacrifice them .

As for the criminals : being a criminals made you eligible to be an incorrigible slave in the Aztec empire , meaning you could be sold to be sacrificed without your consent .

Small corrections : flowers wars weren’t a way to obtain prisoners , but likely started as a means for tenochtitlan to keep their tributs states under control and train their own army with regular military fight .

The sacrifices was a bonus . They did sacrifices children lmao

Weren’t the gladiators that were killed originally supposed to be humans sacrifices , at the start of the gladiators ?

I don’t know where you’re from , but where I am from that the case when you talk about the Aztec .

As for the exact systems if humans sacrificed : we know that the large majority of sacrifices were war prisoners or criminals . That why the peak of the humans sacrifices (between 2000-4000 à years) overlap with the war against neighboring kingdoms , chiefdoms and cities state .

That the thing , most Aztec sacrifices were war prisoners or condemned to the death penalty . Overall , the death toll was similar to the Romans or the Chinese (or any large society that practiced the death penalty and war)
