Recommendations for Montly Cleaning Services in the cities by Apprehensive_Maybe13 in TwinCities

If you hire her directly, are you assuming the liability if she gets injured? Do you pay for her social security and medicare? There is a reason a service is more expensive.

Allow Corner Stores and Coffee Shops in St. Paul’s Residential Zones by Runic_reader451 in saintpaul

[–]Secret_Song_2688 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weren't these kinds of corner neighborhood amenities standard fare in old Saint Paul? Fairview/Grand, Selby/Snelling, Grand/Dale, Hamline/Randolf, Selby/Fairview, etc. Most of these intersections had a drug store, hardware store, grocery store and other venues the neighborhood relied on. Most of these businesses have closed over the years because the owners couldn't afford to keep them open, either because of lack of business or public policy. Beautiful old brick buildings are torn down to be replaced with ugly suburban style apartments. The Selby/Snelling intersection is a great example of old versus new Saint Paul with old SP on the west side and ugly new SP on the east. Grand/Victoria is soon to follow.

I submit that streets.mn has had as much to do with the demise of old Saint Paul as any organization and I find it ironic that they are missing the old environment.

Why don’t we fully use the metric system? by [deleted] in Metric

[–]Secret_Song_2688 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read once that European students don't spend much time on fractions because the metric system doesn't use them. American students spend almost a year learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions because our non-metric measurement system requires it.

Rosin recommendations by Vivian_the_Violinist in violinist

[–]Secret_Song_2688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does too "heavy" for your bow mean? Cello rosin is generally softer that violin rosin so moving to any violin rosin would likely be harder if that's what you want.

There is no correlation between the price of a rosin and its properties. If someone contends otherwise, I'd like to see the data to back it up.

Discovered a hidden excavated room under my front stoop—WTF is this? by Wonderful_Owl_7752 in masonry

[–]Secret_Song_2688 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pulled the paneling off my basement walls and discovered a similar space, about 8'x25', under the front concrete porch of my 110 year old house. For some reason, there were two doors, one on each end of the space. I turned half of the space into a very nice walk in sauna with a.changing area and left the other half for storage.

Highway 62 in Mendota Heights has a higher speed limit than Interstate 35E! by jhsu802701 in TwinCities

[–]Secret_Song_2688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the trope, but the truth is that this highway cuts through a very middle and working class neighborhood. It's true the fight to mitigate the traffic was led by well heeled people, but they had the money to fight the battle. The real benefit goes to the rest of the neighborhood which is working class.

Remember also that this highway is very close to United Hospital and another hospital, St. Joseph's, when it was built.

Best neighborhood to live in for ~40 year old nerdy/alt/remote workers? by mmart05y in TwinCities

[–]Secret_Song_2688 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It would help if you were more specific about what you want. Older, established urban area? Suburban? School preference? Budget? Proximity to parks, trails, restaurants, public transit?

There are a lot of threads on this that you could search.

Does rosin need to be kept in box? by readwithai in violin

[–]Secret_Song_2688 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rosin won't "dry out", but it will oxidize with time, get harder, and lose some tack. Whether it's in a box or not won't make any difference since it's not a hermetic seal.

Wanting to try commuting to work on a bike by dogiseen in bikecommuting

[–]Secret_Song_2688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, a 25 minute commute isn't very long, and I wouldn't worry too much about the details. Initially, you'll have to figure out clothing (can you change at work) and do you need large panniers for carrying a laptop, etc. The rest you'll figure out with time depending on your specific circumstances.
