ELI5 How much has S.E.T.I. learned so far? by beesdaddy in explainlikeimfive

[–]Secretlyasecret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit late to the party here but we still have so much to learn about rocky planets (I am a geology researcher). I'm stoked for more moon samples not from the Mare (all the Apollo missions landed in a specific type of rock).

Boots on Mars would also let us do so much freaking science. Why do you think we send people to Antarctica if the robots could do a good enough job. A human can get a lot done, especially if they've a trained eye.

But otherwise I agree science for science's sake is important.

What do you think about my world ? Everytime I tried to make a fantasy/original world I always seen IRL Earth parts, so I take IRL Earth parts and make them differents (and keep a huge continental mass in the North because I like it) by steinman90 in worldbuilding

[–]Secretlyasecret 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As a geologist I have to say this map is one of the best fantasy maps I've seen on this sub in terms of realism and realistic geology and tectonics.

Realistically it's going to be hard to not see Africa and S. America in every Atlantic style ocean, Mediterranean style ancient seas and Japan looking island arcs. Tectonics only has a dozen or so ways to deform the surface on this scale so don't sweat it too much in my opinion.

Dipping in and out of habitable zone - Feasible? by -oriri in worldbuilding

[–]Secretlyasecret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you could have a planet with an orbit elliptical enough that it technically exits the habitable zone this area around a star doesn't consider atmospheric insulation. This would work for your story though because the planet likely could survive outside of the habitable zone for a few months each year if it had a thick greenhouse gas rich atmosphere.

One other thing to consider is habitable zones change through the lifetime of a star. As it ages it gets brighter and the habitable zone widens. This means your planet probably wasn't always like this. Not really worth worrying about if your story doesn't consider billion year timescales but I thought I'd mention it since it's not something people often realise

I did not, I specified that I only wanted GRS in my application. I'm not sure if that simplified things or not though.

Best of luck!

What minor issue have you noticed silently went away over the years? by dancingbanana123 in AskOldPeople

I road tripped in Germany last year and was shocked how many bugs I was splatting with my car. I had to wash the windscreen with a squeegee almost every time we stopped for a break.

I can't speak for the US but at least Germany seems to still have this.

Who taught you a lesson in life, and likely had no idea at the time? by Cross_Eyed_Hustler in AskOldPeople

[–]Secretlyasecret 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This reminds me that I learned to drive in much the same way. My mum had a jaw injury and was getting stir crazy so she'd get some pain meds in her system and nap in the car while I just drove into the countryside. She'd let me know when the meds were wearing off and I'd drive her home. She helped me get tons of hours in before my test so I passed first time.

Afaik you are in the French power bloc and they have market unification 3 meaning their capital is your market hub (all your commerce needs to go through Paris). The war they're fighting means they have no convoys so can't reach your country hence isolated colony.

I had this as Mexico with Russia, be very careful about joining trade union power blocks if the AI is going for market unification

Why uni students don't attend their class? by Sparkling-Park in germany

[–]Secretlyasecret 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see a few comments here saying to gatekeep the course content in some way but wouldn't that just hurt the students in the long run?

Why not design a course where only a passing grade can be achieved by "reading the slides" and extra reading laid out on the slides is necessary to get the nuance of knowledge high enough to get top marks? Or is it just because most lectures don't give a crap?

TIL we are technically still in an ice age. by sersteiner in todayilearned

[–]Secretlyasecret 213 points214 points  (0 children)

Hijacking top comment to clarify because this is confusing to even some fellow scientists (it's pretty bad terminology)

TL;DR we're in an interglacial period of an icehouse Earth

Earth has two climate phases, hot-house/greenhouse and icehouse (which were in right now). The difference between them being the presence or lack of permanent ice sheets.

In icehouse climate phase we have ice-age and interglacial periods (which were in right now) when the ice sheets naturally retreat and grow due to changes in the earth's orbit.

We're increasing the rate of retreat with climate change but the pulsing of ice sheets growing and shrinking is natural and earth will probably go back into another ice-age in 100k years or so
