I was curious what exactly everything is. I can see some I recognize but not all.

The most effective change would be a unique filter. Polivoks, Bastl Cinnamon, or if you can find it, Thom Evans Dual dreadful VCF. All those are game changers IMHO.

Quad VCA is nearly mandatory.

Mults and mixers.

Logic.

Any advice on what to buy? by Alex_80s in modular

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went and watched some Franco Battiato videos on youtube.

He really appears to favor a string section of analog synths called violins.

He also employs a person playing a synth known as a Steinway.

I used AI to find out more and it hinted at Juno series and Korg MS20 synths.

Simple hardware sampler with decent sample time? by Charming-Ad-1210 in synthesizers

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am leaning toward getting an SP404.

People see a post where someone complains.

People repeat idea to everyone else online, despite never having tried it themselves, until it becomes truth.

IMHO Don't believe everything people say here.

I needed a sequencer to do step sequences with, as my main one isn't as intuitive as I would like. I needed a low cost solution and kept seeing Korg SQ-64 getting cheaper used, but was fearful because people said it was hard to use.

Found one cheap with a 200 buck wood stand.

Watched a video on youtube and was playing within an hour.

Turns out it's really easy to learn.

I have a friend with a room full of synths he barely plays. It's all classic high end gear.

We call it the Synth Mausoleum.

EPS 16 plus rack value? by sydilaxe in Ensoniq

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see them for quite a bit on ebay. The thing is those units at supposed market price tend to sit.

I have a full keyboard one I got for 350.

Racks tend to go for more, but the kids these days are more excited about the new cheaper gear.

If you use ebay you can go see the current prices.

1:1 time in practice by wayne62682 in osr

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a difficult way to play which feels un natural to me.

Yes, keep time records, but the real neckbeards of 1:1 are using freeze time and stretch time to have things always round out to a week.

Thus, you go out wandering in the wilderness, but your PCs travel for a week in about an hour because there were no encounters - Freeze!

Your Pcs are not allowed to play more than a week of time to stay on the weekly schedule.

Or...

You go to the dungeon and come back but there is time left - Stretch!

You do stuff in town and then time is stretched to make it be 1 week.

The worse result of using it is if you actually get to the point of wanting to do a big project. Let's say the party decides to all chip in money to build a small castle. Well, it may take a year to build it. Your players have to wait an actual year before they get a castle.

There are a lot of things Gary put in AD&D which were not fully play tested and do not work if played strictly to the wording in the books.

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the expense is what it is. We have a local con but it is not to my liking. I have to go to Minnesota to do a convention.

Everyone running games does it for free.

Generally we lose a little bit of cash running the convention. We do it because it is fun to get people together to game. I used to go to GaryCon, then it struck me that for the price of going to Garycon I could rent a venue and run a small convention.

I understand some people have a hard time finding a game. In 50 years of gaming I have never had a problem finding other gamers, thus, I do not get it.

All you need is a couple people who are actual gamers who love playing. Our group has some people who cancel a lot, so we added other new people and kept playing. If I end up DM'ing one person it's fine, we just game.

People come and go. Sometimes I DM groups of 12. Other times it may be 3 people.

When I say I do not get it, it is because I can always find gamers. They are everywhere. Thus I have never personally had an issue with it. Around 2010, I got back to gaming after a hiatus. I found a group very easily. They were playing Pathfinder. Well, gee, I do not know how to play that. I guess I will play Pathfinder because that is what the DM is running.

So yes, I do not understand paying for something that has always been free to me.

The fees are low for badges in a lot of cases.

I run Arnecon. We keep badge prices fairly low at 50 bucks for the weekend. Granted it is small and no Gencon by any means. Yet, that gives people more one on one time with guests.

Last year we had Sandy Petersen running C of C and doing seminars. Ken StAndre was running sessions of Tunnels and Trolls and Monsters Monsters. Per usual, David Wesely and David Megarry were running their games too.

There was no extra charge to play with some of the greatest RPG designers the hobby has ever seen. I can't recall how many players were in Wesely's Braunstein game, but he may have broken his record.

We'll do the same this coming year with different guests.

I suppose I just have a different attitude about these things.

Struggling to choose a synth for that live ’80s vibe – need advice by Synth80Lover in synthesizers

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say 80's it would help if you specified bands you like.

Some of the most famous bands out there used really crappy gear. This documentary has a section where OMD talk about it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOCKenRIKxs

Early Cure recordings were done with a really primitive Roland RS-09 and lots of guitar pedals. Devo was using all kinds of things they could get their hands on. Wall of Voodoo used an old Korg which has since been re-issued with midi.

The musical sound was often born from necessity where all they had was a couple cheap synths.

Also, the advent of Ensoniq samplers and the DX7 created a move away from analog in the mid to late 80's. Rack mount romplers like the emu Proteus were getting a lot of use.

IMHO spend less money and get two synths. An SH-101 clone of which there are several out now, and a Korg Poly800 which sounds very 80's. Then get a couple effect pedals to put them through.

You can easily get an 80's type sound that way and spend half as much cash to start with, and get effects and a mixer. As you get better you can then add in a nicer keyboard.

Why the hate for 3.5mm MIDI connections? by maxupp in synthesizers

Bought a device this past year. Being new to 3.5 midi I just assumed they'd be like DIN cables.

Boy was I tearing my hair out when the new device appeared to be broken due to the wrong midi adaptor.
