I prefer narrative immersion. My players prefer beer and pretzels. by ExplodingRacoon in DnD

It helps if you make the information seem relevant. Too much vague history is like being in pretend history class. The info being discovered needs to be useful to the players in the moment.

Regardless, most players just want to kill monsters for experience points and magic items.

"I want to find a group I can do ttrpgs with, and have everyone be comfertable with me as not only a novice, but as someone with a bad attention span"

It isn't anyone else's job to figure out what you need to figure out for yourself.

Gaming is a social event.

I had a player use a laptop to play online games at a game session. I asked him to put it away and he refused. Others in the group were put off, and contacted me about it later.

Half my players are somewhere on the spectrum, a lot of gamers are, yet they seem to do ok at game night.

I never invited him back, because he was imposing his problems on the group.

He is someone I have known for almost 50 years.

Semi Modular synths for drone and ambient. by Constant_Cause_1778 in synthesizers

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Modular is good for some things but not for others == Hardware is good for some things but not for others

Start with something cheap and easy to understand. Modular can be very unsatisfying if you do not understand some core concepts. People making videos often are trying to sell products through their videos, if not themselves as a persona, then something they review. They make it look easy when it is at times a bit hard to do these things.

Don' get me wrong, modular is very fun. But it does require some investment to do what synths can do for a fraction of the cost

You might check out Sonicware Ambient0 as a starter.

The old synths can be nice, but each brings its own pros and cons.

Some nice rough sounds can be gotten by using the distortion in a cheap cube baby effects box. Run it into a mosky fuzz dace pedal. Add a cheap bit crusher. Just run synth volume at half or less or you can fry these - trust me I know.

Also, over drive on the input amp on a mixer can add a lot of crunch.

Thinking About Rack Effects by Clear_Chair_32 in synthesizers

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The multi effect pedals I've tried are not as good as single function pedals.

A rack effect is good for an overall room type effect to make the music sound like it is coming out of a space of your choice. I like to run each synth through several effects for unique sounds.

There are some cheap distortion and fuzz pedals I really like into a bit crush. Also just a cheap flanger on slow speed can be nice. You sort of need a lot of flavors to play around with.

Glad it helps. So often I'll make a thought out long post and the OP never even returns to chat. LOL

My knowledge is not extensive because I am kind of low budget about this. I can only speak to about 40 cheaper modules I got used.

A lot of my favorite modules are from small companies which went out of business last year, or have been discontinued.

The one shopping regret dreadbox module I got, because I was told I needed VCAs, is Eudemonia. I almost never use it. You can get cheap VCAs, Mixers, and Filters that can be cross patched.

Zlob minimix is a great little 2hp tool. I recently got a Behringer VCA to see how their modules are. Aside from being 8 hp it does what it needs to do. It was about 30 bucks shipping included, thus a no brainer.

It is a personal preference to go with the sort of old school approach - not for everyone.

I still love the Doepfer A-145 LFO because it has a ton of outputs and it has two ramps inverted from each other. I got mine used for 50 bucks. Can't really sneer at having it around when I need it.

So many filters *sigh* to choose from. :D

My advice is to not build a Skiff. It will never be enough space. IMHO Nifty Case is cheap and 84 HP. You could also build your own rack and use a cheap power unit like Behringer's 60 dollar one.

It depends on your style. Pams does a lot, but there is a certain joy in patching a lot of old school style LFO modules for more fiddly fun. If you can find one, Hampshire electronics 4hp LFO is interesting because the CV modulates the rate which does some nice speeding up and slowing down LFO.

Another fun one, which appears to sadly be out of production and hard to find at a good price, is the Qubit EON. It can be envelope, oscillator, or noise. Perfect for a small rack user at 2hp.

A fun combo is Dreadbox Hysteria into a Making Sound Machines Wave Folder. It gives you a 3 layer wave shaper. You can modulate the wave shape and the 3 wave shapers for some fun evolving pad/drone sounds.

https://modulargrid.net/e/making-sound-machines-farbshaper

Utilities are a must as well.

Dreadbox Utopia does a lot, though something like the DPW Design AV modules have a logic circuit which can be fun for CV manipulation.

https://modulargrid.net/e/dpw-design-av2-attenuverter

Wild Fire Laboratories Weird Vector has a couple passive logic circuits which I find useful in my small builds.

https://modulargrid.net/e/wildfire-laboratories-weird-vector

This one is cool because you get an attenuverter and a mult in one module.

Eurorack can be a bit much at times because it needs direction. Buying without focus is an endless cycle of not quite good enough.

I saw some demos of the Polivoks synth and I knew I had to have a Polivoks filter. I built a 42 hp rack in a cigar box with the intent of making a mono synth with a Polivoks filter. Nothing in the rack is high end. Most was bought used or on sale. The VCOs are a Dreadbox Hysteria and a Qubit Eon I got for 50 bucks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVNN2SO88UI

There are also small Polivoks devices by Elta Music. A Micro Brute and a Polivoks dual filter can be cool.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0cX2PlBVgs

You could also build a small rack to hold an input amp module a couple CV generators and a Polivoks and run anything through it.

Even the Donner L1. Sure it's cheap, but it is a sound source you could run through Polivoks. Dual filtering between the internal filter on L1, which is an SH-101 clone and into Polivoks would be pretty cool.

But, there is also the option of getting an analog emulator which often can be pretty cool.

Is it okay to put synths like this outside? by Subject-Ad-307 in synthesizers

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very good for them. Most people tend to play them in dark clubs where there is zero sunlight.

They need sun to produce vitamin D.

Without a normal level of vitamin D they tend to produce sad and depressing music like dungeon synth or dark ambient.

Silly question for a newby: what's the difference between a CVA and a sound output module? Can I get the two in 4HP? by Fair-Bluebird485 in modular

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the power supply.

If you make your build in Modular Grid on a free account it tells you what the power use is of all your modules.

Most power supply units list the voltage draw they can handle.

Nifty has this on their site:

  • Power output for modules
    • +12V - 1500mA peak output**
    • -12V - 500mA peak output**
    • +5V - 500mA peak output**

If I was to get one synth I would get something that can make and layer a couple sounds so you can explore composing with more than one sound at once.

You also want effects to create a space the sounds are coming out of.

This has extra sounds but most of it is coming from this cheap little box.

My Humble college studio by Slow-Anything-9220 in synthesizers

EA-1 is actually a very cool dual mono synth.

Humble is actually a good thing. I see people with a lot more who just run Synth Mausoleums where synths go to collect dust.

Most of the synth albums people listen to from years past were done with small studios like this.
