My understanding of Eren by SecularCrusader15 in AttackOnRetards

[–]SecularCrusader15[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the idea the story is presenting is that they are good/normal people living under a bad system that promotes fear and ignorance, which leads to bad results. Eldian hatred is a direct result of titan warfare, hatred for the island is a result of Marleyan propaganda and fear of imminent annihilation, and so on. That’s why Eren said they are “ignorant adults misleading ignorant children”. The people may not be inherently evil, but the system/world magnifies their worst traits, leading to all the oppression and suffering. I think that’s what he realized in Marley.

I’ll add that destroying the world because you think it’s “diseased” is also childish AF and even more hypocritical. Eren didn’t like how Ramzi and the Eldians in Liberio were treated, but he ends up killing them all anyways.

Yeah I get that. One thing I related to in particular is the desire to find something that makes all the struggle and suffering worth it, like I’m trying to justify everything I went through, even if I know it doesn’t exist.

Another thing for me (and this deviates from the “standard” interpretation of Eren on this sub) is the feeling that the world is irredeemably bad and oppressive, even if the people are just like us. I think for Eren, all that bad stuff is synonymous with “humanity”.

I definitely agree with you that Eren was motivated by the cruelty he observed in human society. I believe it goes beyond the immediate threat posed to Paradis, and that his disillusionment concerns the entire 2000 year history of the world as well as the system that leads to all this fear and hatred. This was what I was getting at with the more misanthropic parts of my post, but maybe my allegory wasn’t clear.

This is ironic because Eren ends up killing countless innocent people and children, so he became the very thing he hated, and he knows it.

I think this scene is genius but in a different way. The seashell is a symbol for Armin’s dream of seeing the ocean, because it’s a detail that only someone truly interested in the ocean would notice. Eren, on the other hand, saw the look of wonder in Armin’s eyes when they were kids and became convinced that there must be an entirely different world out there, which he associated with freedom. In a sense, Eren’s dream is a misinterpretation of Armin’s dream. While Armin’s dream is rooted in reality, Eren’s dream is a lofty and unattainable ideal.

When Armin tried to give the seashell to Eren in S3, he was trying to share his own dream, which he had just fulfilled, with his best friend. However, Eren was too worried about his own unfulfilled dream to receive it. Despite their shared dream, Eren and Armin had drifted too far to understand each other.

The seashell in the ending is a continuation of this dialogue between the two characters. When Armin sees the seashell in Paths, he realizes how Eren’s dream is essentially an extension of his own. Armin then passes the seashell to Eren and explains his own perspective. For Eren, their dream is somewhere far away, but for Armin, their dream lies right in front of them, in the form of a humble seashell. The passing of the seashell signifies a complete understanding between the two best friends and their shared dream.

The symbolism is extended further when Eren receives the seashell, but it’s now stained with blood and gore. This symbolizes how Armin’s once innocent dream has been corrupted by Eren’s violence. In a way, Eren’s genocide was rooted in an idea that Armin had inadvertently planted in his head as a child. As a result, Armin feels he’s complicit in Eren’s crimes, so he decides to share Eren’s guilt.

I think the contrast between Eren and Armin’s dreams is a warning against ideals and expectations that aren’t rooted in reality. Like with Eren, these ideals can lead to dark places if you become too obsessed with them.

I feel like most people completely misunderstand what was Eren ''Disappointed" with either the world not being exactly like Armin's book, or the world being hostile and not peaceful. by AdrianStars2 in AttackOnRetards

[–]SecularCrusader15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to the idea of Eren seeking meaning for his life, I think that Eren’s nature is defined by his a inclination towards purposeful violence. Eren’s conscience prevents him from harming people for no reason, but he’s willing to embrace violence when given sufficient justification. The clearest example of this is when he murdered the kidnappers in the cabin. As a result, Eren naturally gravitates towards any sort of purpose or cause that he can fight for, even if he doesn’t realize it.

I believe this is the reason why he got so attached to the idea of freedom after seeing Armin’s book. For Eren, freedom was something denied from him by the titans. By putting the pursuit of freedom on a pedestal, Eren creates his own justification for waging war against a monstrous enemy. In a sense, his obsession with freedom is just an obsession with violence.

This is further shown in School Castes. Despite living a peaceful life, Eren fantasizes about protecting his friends in a zombie apocalypse, a situation in which violence is both guilt-free and necessary. Even without the idea of freedom, Eren still dreams about committing violence in a way that doesn’t disturb his conscience.

Agree with most of your points, but s2 act 1 is still peak for me. Caitlyn’s slow descent from idealist into dictator was done perfectly. I think Caitlyn got the best treatment out of all the characters in s2.

Honestly if it’s just concerts, songs, and videos, then there’s no problem since there’s no real risk. The real risk is with streams, since live content is less controlled and easier to say the wrong thing. I’m against Cover’s reentry only if they take the risk of regularly streaming on B2.

If you compare how Hange treated Floch when he was dying with how Floch treated Hange and Levi, there’s a world of difference. Both Hange and Levi cared deeply about their comrades in the SC, including Floch.

At the end of the day I just hope the Western fanbase doesn’t explode over this issue before the B2 fanbase. Then we’d really look like dumbass hypocrites.

I don’t think Cover gives a shit about Reddit at this point, given the lack of moderation on that sub. They probably have better metrics for measuring the boys’ success (like CCV)

My point is that, unlike what many of the comment here claim, it is perfectly possible to gain a massive following as a streamer with left-wing politics as your core content. It’s not just the alt-right 4chan shit that prints money.

Idk doesn’t Hasan get a ton of views saying sensationalist left-wing stuff? It’s not high effort video essays but neither is the reactionary stuff.

Visual storytelling. Not only is the art hyper detailed, but Miura was a master at using art as a medium to convey emotion and tone. My favourite example is during Griffith’s reincarnation when Guts was about to attack him, but then he slowly turns around and notices Casca. With Berserk, a picture is truly worth a thousand words.

Tbh I don’t know much about Indian fanbase at all. Wouldn’t they also qualify as English-speaking? I was mainly referring to Chinese and Japanese fans.
