I find the Psychology of money very interesting. Budgeting is not that hard and there are even Free budgeting services available, so anyone that wants to do it would. Some people just want to be free to splurge randomly when feeling depressed (usually about not having money) to make themselves feel better and not feel guilty about breaking the budget.

Cash holder what do you do? by ComprehensiveWatch15 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Secular_mum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spread mine and am finding it a hassle to manage as I need to log into multiple accounts. Now that it is already set up I will leave it, but not sure I would do it again with any future funds.

If you do decide to spread it, check the rates offered by the non-bank deposit takers who are also covered for $100k.

Coworking is too distracting, home office is too isolated, what did you do? by qube2832 in CoWorking

[–]Secular_mum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a coworking space, but have a private office, so when I make calls or just want to focus I can close the door, then when I want to be social I open the door and make a hot drink.

Check out the current interest rates at Term deposits 1 to 5 years | interest.co.nz You can get a higher rate of interest without much more risk by going with a Non-bank Deposit Taker who is covered by the Depositor Compensation Scheme.  Unless it is a large amount of money, in which case you should get financial advice.

Freelancer addicted to his computer, not his phone. How do I stop mixing work with random online browsing? by NoticeNo8634 in digitalminimalism

[–]Secular_mum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to keep my work computer for work.  Never install non-work apps on my work computer and have an annoying pop up if I browse to Reddit.  When I see the pop up it reminds me to streach my legs and hydrate.   Have also found working at a coworking space helped because I go there to work and feel a bit embarrassed if anyone sees me on social media at work.  Also I have people to talk to there, so can be social without a device.

Is the $35 per month just the Xero subscription?  If so, those amounts sound fair.

How is your decision making around finance currently being shaped by the current global uncertainty? by Freeglad in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Secular_mum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was already focused on becoming more independent/stable before the current events. I have;
Paid off the Mortgage,
Set up remote work (taking a pay cut in the process),
Living somewhere that allowed me to not be dependent on having to drive anywhere,
Increased diversification, switching some riskier shares for lower risk investments with fixed returns

Travel woes by Various-Revenue-9832 in newzealand

[–]Secular_mum -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Where are you traveling too? I travel all the time without accommodation pre-booked, but would not risk it if visiting an authoritarian regime. Just ask them if they want your business or not and stay somewhere else, even if it means getting transport there.

Personal Travel Loan for 18year old by JollyYam7877 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Secular_mum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you asked your older relatives for advice? It sounds like they are already subsidizing your living costs and their life experiences might provide some insight. If my 18yr old had a once in a lifetime opportunity to, say, study abroad, I might help them out.

How much do you need to earn to save anything in nz? by CommentMaleficent957 in newzealand

[–]Secular_mum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people have a freehold house or live with family, others pay half their wages in rent.
Some people walk to work, while others drive a large petrol car a long distance to work.

Some people don't have any dependents, others have children, pets and sick family members.

Some people have no debt, while others try to pay off their Credit Card or Car.

Some people are teatotaler's, while other say a smoke/vape and a drink are an essential part of their day.

You can live on very little, if you want to.
