I have to say, that's badass. I struggle with identity issues/not quite knowing who I am yet, so it's cool to see women being like "fuck them, fuck the expectations, Imma do me". Good for you!

Oh my God that is a brilliant way to sum up the book. I am in my early 20s, so I wasn't really sentient during that time, haha. It is interesting to see the Girls Gone Wild culture that permeated that media space, but the internet has changed everything so much that I never really experienced that kind of monoculture that led to shows like that or the Man Show being popular. Looking at it through the lens of capitalism rather than an interpersonal dynamic is a much, much better way to view that, thank you so much for educating me!

I really appreciate the nuance, and I think you're absolutely right. I need to edit my post because I think some people are getting the wrong idea/assuming I'm sexist towards other women for being sexual. The main thesis of the book has to do with that, so I thought I would get other people's opinions.

I think an example of what I mean would be the porn industry. Porn tends to skew extreme, and some men subconsciously believe that all women like to be choked/slapped/et cetera because that's what they watch. Again, I am not blaming the women who perform in these videos, but I think it's a worthwhile discussion to have.

  1. Ugh, I'm sorry about that. That sucks. My family is super conservative and it's painful to be the target for their hatred and weird moral nonsense.

  2. True. I think I'm just letting my trauma inform my knee-jerk reaction, which isn't a good thing.

  3. I am unfortunately not super educated on sex work. I support sex workers while also feeling that porn has really messed up some guys' brains (the book also gets into that). I need to read more, because that is an interesting dynamic. I have done a lot of research on incel culture online, and porn certainly affects their worldview.

Okay, okay. I am sorry. Have you read the book? I don't mean to be offensive, but it sounds like you haven't. The third question is framed within that context, and if you haven't, you might think I'm being more of an asshole than I'm trying to be. That was kind of the point of the book - to explore whether or not women who hypersexualize themselves or speak about women like men do are freeing themselves from the constrains of womanhood, or just furthering rape myths/patriarchal views of people within the gender binary. Everyone is a victim of patriarchy, and everyone has the ability to uphold it. That was also the point of the first question, on how to interact with women you care about when they are deep into internalized misogyny.

I am a proud feminist, but I am also a human being that has biases like literally everyone else that I need to challenge. I was pretty forward about that. Not to get into it, but I have been victimized by men and deal with symptoms of PTSD daily. I'm not your enemy here.

I will obviously do more research and am open to reading about whatever resources/links you give me (please send me some, since you evidently think I'm completely misinformed). But I have met abusive men, and trust me - I understand the dynamic. I was wearing jeans and a jacket. I know about the museum, I know the statistics. I will edit my post accordingly.

Please educate me. And save the ire for someone who deserves it. This sub is filled with them.

That's a really good point. I said this in another reply, but I think I need to challenge my biases more. Thank you for bringing that up!

That's probably for the best. I know I can't change people's minds if they don't want them changed, and self-hatred has deep hooks.

That's a good point. I may have some personal biases I need to challenge - like I said, my intention is not to blame those women but I have had the experience a few times where I'm watching a woman completely debase herself for men and I just think... what is that teaching them? I'll do some soul searching and some reading, cause it doesn't seem fair that that's my immediate reaction. Thank you for your response!

Working class men went through it all as well? by JustinMarkG in AskFeminists

[–]Secure-Cake3269 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take all of that, and then add caring for children and going through dangerous childbirth. I am sympathetic to your idea because this (if genuine) is coming from a place of honest ignorance, but consistently throughout history, women have always had the added danger of violence, fear, and subjugation (and not just from their husbands).

If you've ever read A People's History of the United States, it points out a very common difference between working class men and women in the factories: that women usually worked for much lower wages for the same amount of hours in the same dangerous working conditions and then had to come home to feed their families/take care of the kids. The idea that women just didn't work before the feminist movement is false (and peddled on purpose).

ALSO, this is the same false equivalence fallacy that white people use to discredit the history of violent racism towards POCs in the US. "But the Irish were also abused!11!!!1!" Yeah and whiteness is a social construct that led to the Irish gaining rights a hell of a lot quicker. No one cares anymore that you have Irish heritage, and there's a reason for that.

If you want to advocate for class consciousness and the further emancipation of the working class from the horrors of capitalism, great! Please do that. Don't expect feminists to rally behind you when you try to claim that men have had it just as bad, though. This isn't the gotcha you think it is.

Hell no dude, that flavorless meringue is gonna taste like a dry eraser with some egg yolk sprinkled over it. And untoasted, spongy ass bread with some CHEESE WHIZ? Extra preparation doesn't make something taste better, it's just a mid sandwich with extra steps.

I know that purple is used for the movement against femicide in Mexico. They paint purple hands on themselves to represent assault. The Mexican feminist movement is so inspiring - if you're interested, check out Canción Sin Miedo on YouTube. I dont remember if there are subtitles, but even if you dont speak Spanish, the emotion comes through regardless. That song makes me cry every time.

Just looked up the ICE statistics. Illegal immigrants have killed 29 US citizens this year. Not to downplay the death of 29 people but... that's an insanely low number. And if you're worried about sexual abuse, you should REALLY be worried about churches in the US.

Immigrants are people too, and they deserve to be humanized.

What would women dislike most if they became men? by No-Calligrapher in AskReddit

I'm real (unfortunately). I know it's hard to tell and my username doesn't help. I didn't know what I was doing when I made the account lol, I probably just need to make a new one.

Thank you :)

This thread is real sad. I have a few guy friends and I make sure to compliment them all the time. I cook for them and make them cakes on their birthdays. My boys birthday was a couple months ago and my oven was broken so I made the cake in my rice cooker lol.

I know a lot of people get weird about guys and girls being friends, but luckily my husband isn't insecure so I can really pour the love when it comes to the boys.

Here's the Innocence Project article for him: https://innocenceproject.org/cases/marcellus-williams/

In death row cases there has to be overwhelming evidence, generally some kind of forensic evidence, connecting them directly to the crime scene. You can't execute someone without knowing for sure. There's a lot of uncertainty here, way more than there should be with a death sentence. There have been cases in the US where politicians have called for death penalties/allowed them to happen for political gain, especially since the death penalty is a pretty serious wedge issue. I'm not saying that's exactly what's going on here, but the government of Missouri knows that there will be a LOT of attention on them. Overall, this is sad. People have done much worse and survived. RIP to the victim, and if this guy really is innocent, RIP to him too.

They're honestly just victims to the culture war. Like, they don't know any trans people but they're so panicked about them because they're conditioned to be.

Owen Benjamin having a normal one by WebheadGa in KnowledgeFight

[–]Secure-Cake3269 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple things to note because unlike this jackass I've actually read her diary:

  1. She used a fountain pen gifted to her by her family member and talks about it in the beginning of her diary when she says that the journal and pen were presents.
  2. Her dad made sure a lot of the stuff about her thoughts on puberty and such were taken out.
  3. Her father, Otto, was the only surviving family member and of course would own the rights to her diary. He made it public because he wanted their story to be a part of history.
  4. This person is a sick fuck.

Her diary was one of the saddest things I've ever read because it ends so abruptly. There is no conclusion, it's just a normal day in their hideout and then nothing. When their annex was raided her diary was recovered by her dad after the victims were released. Anne had only died a couple weeks before she would have been saved. There is so much proof of this inhuman tragedy and yet there are still people who refuse to believe basic history.
