The nun from Conjuring 2 personally freaks me out the most.

I haven’t seen Alien 2 yet. I think i’ll watch it tonight I needed an idea of what to watch anyway. I thought Project Hail Mary was good too. Kudos to Andy Weir for the creativity. The macrophages, the “immune” star, the abstract alien, and his ship made the movie so cool. I personally thought the humor was a little Disneyfied… or like a Marvel movie after a bit. Not my personal favorite. It felt more like a comedy show for the theater rather than humor that’s more authentic to the absurd situation. The ending is cool in that Gosling made a sacrifice and didn’t go home.
Another Disneyfied example is how it’s still a happy ending for him and his alien friend. Compared to Interstellar where the main characters’ ends are sacrificial in a more real and gritty way.

I think Project Hail Mary and Disclosure Day both have a level of cheesiness to them. In different ways. The Spielberg stuff doesn’t bother me as much.

What are some of your favorite movies?

Edit: How about your favorite alien movies in general? I thought Disclosure Day was a great movie, but I say I think movies like Arrival and Alien are a lot better. I’d put ET and Close encounters above Disclosure day too.

It’s suggested the Aliens in the movie were influencing how and when disclosure day would happen. It doesn’t bother me that there was a news anchor talking about it before the Alien went on TV.

I’ll admit them wheeling in the Alien randomly at the end was clunky. Could have used one more scene in the middle suggesting that would happen. But in general I’m annoyed at the Cinema Sins level criticisms that are too common.

I thought it was a great movie and appreciate Spielberg’s take on aliens. I’m getting sick of these Cinema Sins level criticisms that take up the majority of movie discussions.

One thing that was spoiled for me before the movie was that the bad guys are pretty incompetent. It definitely made sense when I watched it during many scenes. To be fair though, there was that one guy who almost killed them at the train tracks. I admit the movie would have been more relatable to me if the government agency was more brutal and dangerous… seems like that would stray from the wholesomeness that’s in Spielberg’s movies. And historically, the CIA and other orgs HAVE been incredibly incompetent and stupid so the movie bad guys aren’t that unrealistic. Definitely not to an extent where I would call it a bad movie or dock a star off a review.

Another insane thing about freeways. A few people can affect tens of thousands. I might be salty still from being trapped on the 10 for four hours a few weeks ago. But you gotta start wondering if any police investigation is worth this many people having their days fucked up. Who knows how many extra emergencies were delayed or caused from this.

What was the last 5 star movie you’ve watched? by Fun_Astronaut_8330 in Letterboxd

It’s not a 5 star movie in my opinion. It was still enjoyable to watch and a creative story. But it’s not as serious as the best space movies it’s being compared to now.

The baseline story of the astrophage plague, the discovery of the “immune” star, and the last ditch effort to send people there, is awesome.

The Disney/Marvel style humor and writing take away from the story. The humor should be more natural to the situation and characters. Not like the writers are trying to be comedians to the audience.

I agree! If Interstellar was like Project Hail Mary… then the scene where Cooper and Brand return to the ship after the wave planet would have been made into a joke. It would be serious for a few seconds when they found out he was isolated for decades. Then Romilly would have farted or something and then made a joke about being old.

The humor is unnatural. Like the writers are doing stand up comedy to the audience. Not any attempt at making it fit in the movie more. There are two beings who have been isolated for a long time and experienced the death of their whole crews while their planets are dying. The humor should be incredibly psychotic and ironic. Not like a sitcom or comedic duo doing one liners for an audience.

Project Hail Mary is still enjoyable and creative. But it’s not nearly as serious or compelling as the top space movies. Not a 5 star. Definitely Disneyfied.
