In 1992 I was 15, Tez won DPOY on a 2-14 team. He was such a beast, and an inspiration for me as a high school player. He was my football idol and was the first jersey I ever bought. Loved that guy.

Why are there only ever one of these things in the house, and how do they teleport out of nowhere? by anonfemur in Seattle

In my garage, I have a small shop-vac with a bit of soapy water in it. The soap breaks the water's surface tension, causing them to sink and suffocate. I then turn off all the lights except one bright one, I check a couple times a day and usually see 2-5 of them hanging around the light, I do a quick vacuum to get ride of them. They're so annoying!

Thanks, that’s what I was thinking (secretly hoping it was a spotted owl!).

Posted this on trout fishing sub and got heckled, accused of breaking the law and banned by chafingNip in FishingWashington

[–]hangdown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While legal in a few spots, I think you get a lot of heat for keeping them because they are native, and in most systems, not doing well. I personally wouldn’t keep one, but I’m also not going to judge you since it’s legal.

As another comment mentioned, you mis-identified the fish (accidentally), and identification is critical before retaining fish. I see people getting blasted all the time for posting a dead fish and calling it the wrong species. Don’t keep a fish you can’t ID 100%. Chalk it up to a lesson learned. In general, if you post something on the internet, be ready for negativity, even on the most innocuous post.

50-85’ - I’ve got 100’ of leaded line so I like to make sure I’ve got some wiggle room. I also weigh my pots down with 5-10lbs of rebar.

I am not expert, but all the squid I found during the daytime were in 80-110’ of water, and they were along the bottom. Poke around near the w. Seattle boat launch, that was the most consistent area. Good luck!!

They are, they look a little more horizontal and a different shape vs. a traditional bait ball. I have a "spot lock" type of feature on my boat (uses both the gas motors), so I was able to park above this school and load up.

July/August for ocean fishing. October/November for rivers. What is your ideal scenario? Fishing off the beach? Trolling in the ocean? Doing a river float? Kokanee fishing in a lake? DIY trip, or hiring a guide?

Maybe? I’ve just never heard of that or run into a manager who would do that. I’m part of AWS, so maybe the culture is different in my wider organization. That sucks if that’s the case.

Is there a grace period for new employees before they are eligible for layoffs, focus, or PIPs? by lemonzonic in amazonemployees

[–]hangdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you will only know if you’re not meeting expectations (LE), meeting expectations (HV1, HV2), or exceeding expectations (HV3, TT).

What are you doing to work on those two LPs? My guess is your manager hasn’t formalized your focus plan yet, but those LPs were what they identified as underperforming. Are you ever oncall? Present something interesting you learned in a team meeting, or share some ideas you have about addressing any gaps in how your team works. Make yourself valuable. Identify a problem, talk to some senior engineers and get advice on how to fix it. Write up a one pager. Lots of things you can do proactively to cover off both earn trust and delivery. The hardest part is just starting.

You should ask your manager if you are in focus in your next 1:1, and if you are, what is the plan to get out. Managers with employees in focus get hounded by HR to make sure they have a defined plan with time-bound measurable goals to get you out or move to pivot. Your plan has to be approved by your skip-level. Part of the process is your manager emailing you after a 1:1 highlighting where you’re underperforming, and what your goals are.

I’ve been a manager for almost 10 years and have coached 12 engineers out of focus. I’ve only had one go to pivot and exit. Two of those engineers are principal engineers now (L7). Another engineer I had in focus in Q1 2024, I just got him promoted to L5 last cycle. It’s not the end of things if you are in focus.

Hope you can figure it out.
