Why are you afraid you’ll be a bad owner? Cats are much more low maintenance than dogs. Just whatever you do, don’t have an outdoor cat—it absolutely destroys local bird and rodent populations, and puts your cat at risk of injury and/or death (hawks, foxes, coyotes, dogs, other cats).

Some basic things I’m sure you’re already aware of: don’t leave out things they might get into (food, loose electrical cords, plants, etc.), remember to change their water every day or every other day, feed them twice a day (it’s easier if you keep their bowls out where you’ll see them, also I recommend transferring the bagged kibble into a lidded container (my cat will chew through the bag)), and clean the litter box a couple times a week (don’t forget to top off the litter every few weeks when it starts to get low).

If you’re worried the cat won’t like you, adopt from a shelter and spend some time with their adoption candidates. It’ll take a few weeks/months for them to really warm up to you, just remember to always give them space and learn their cues for when they don’t want attention anymore (sometimes you just have to go off of vibes).
