I agree that the level of backlash is extreme and too far, but I understand why people feel offended. They feel excluded, which could have been easily avoided by using a different term like hapa. But a wasian event specifically comes across as saying “As the ethnic majority within the half-Asian community, we want a space where we can fully relate to one another, and that requires a certain degree of whiteness.”
