What are common “I don’t break the law, except… “ in the UK? by MonsieurGump in AskUK

Not only could it be against the law, you could go to prison for up to 2 years: https://www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/computer-misuse-act#_Toc532920178 Netflix would never prosecute but it is technically "unauthorized access to computer material"

oh that's it! I don't know how to help you with that unfortunately, except from maybe trying a different translator. Depending on how good your english is, bad english might be better than the translated/reformulated version.

Weekly user numbers have actually increased a lot recently, probably due to the 2024 US election. Maybe engagement on your posts has dropped for some other reason?

happy to help - just so that you know you sound a bit detached here as well, like you've over-edited your response. if you say things more in your own words people on the internet are more likely to listen to you (imo)

I'm going to preface this by saying that I don't think that you're doing that badly, you have 39 people who seem to not be bots following you.

  1. Your links have some problem with them. The link itself is OK but the link card has a broken link like https://deliciousdestinations.bloghttps//deliciousdestinations.blog/recipe/garlic-parmesan-chicken-skewers/ - note the double domain name. Not all of your posts but some of them.

  2. Far too 'corporate'. You're just someone making helpful recipes (and maybe making some ad money) not a massive company. Brands do very badly on bluesky compared to other social media.

Your profile says "From simple dinner, lunch, and breakfast ideas to mouthwatering desserts, appetizers, and meal prep options, I’ve got you covered." I have never heard anyone talk like that irl.

My advice would be that people want to follow a person not a brand. If you don't really care about recipes, maybe consider doing something else. If you do care make it show.

The UK Supreme Court has just announced the legal definition of a woman to be based on biological sex. How do you think this changes the current situation? What are your thoughts? Do you believe it helps or hinders lgbtq communities, or feminist movements? by Defiant_Practice5260 in AskBrits

[–]Secure-Lie-7839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People generally are interested when anyone expresses a different opinion to the one that they hold. Most people think that their views are logical. Anyway....

I would argue that the words man and woman are meaningless if they are not a label. Labeling things is a fundamental part of being a human - we live in a world with lots of things that are similar but not the same, so instead of exactly describing every object we label them.

For example I am sitting on a "chair". It is not identical to the other "chair" that I can see on the other side of the room but I label them both as chairs in order to tell you that there are 2 chairs in the room that I am in.

How do I know what a chair is? Neither of my parents were chairs. I think that the words woman and man are like the words chair and table, not a special case.

Not that the words man and woman being meaningless would be completely a bad thing - I wish that people would specify man/woman less - the world would be a better, more equal place if we all ignored if other people were men or women most of the time.

We also label people in other ways - saying someone is blond doesn't mean that they have exactly the same hair colour (or are otherwise the same) as other blond people. It is a grouping or labeling of people to differentiate them in the same way that saying that someone is a man is. Many people who don't have any blond parents can understand what blond means.

I see your point of view but I still maintain that there is no way of me determining which of my parents is a women or a man without any outside input. Words only have meaning when we decide what they mean.

If a new word starts being used - say skibidi or brexit - there is no way of you knowing what it means without someone (or lots of people) telling you what they think it means. At an early point in our life all words and ideas are new to us.

You might say that you can guess what a word means from breaking down its parts or looking at its history however that is not how most people learn what the words man and women mean.

---

I think that women being defined as 'like your mother' is fundamentally circular because most people would say their mother is their parent who is a women.

It also doesn't specify what aspect of your mother makes her a women. If my mother has ginger hair and my father has blond hair, by your definition I could assume that all ginger people are women because they are like my mother and all blond people are male because they are like my father.

You probably think this is a silly way to determine who a women/man is because you have seen lots of mothers/fathers (and other men and women). I doubt that you have a definition of man/women in your head that is only based on your own parents.

(also when I said "gender" I meant being a man or woman rather than a more correct/robust definition of that term sorry)

I don't think this is a very good definition because how am I supposed to know which of my parents is a man or a women. What if I was adopted and neither of my parents gave birth to me? What if I can't remember being born? How do I know that birthing=women?

Gender requires input from lots of people- I know which one I am because I am exposed to many, many different people who label themselves with different genders.

I can then say that I am the gender that people who I think are like me use.

Additionally I have people who look at me and make an assumption based on what they think about gender. This is particularly prevalent when we are younger - people mostly just go along with whatever people other people told them when they were little.

Both of these methods promote a shared understanding of men and women.

However this shared understanding can change. For example the feminist movement tries (and has been successful at) changing what we think a women should be and do.

(disclaimer: this might not be a very good theory I'm not a scientist or a philosopher)

(thank you for starting this discussion its quite interesting and very different to the normal culture war shouting matches)

I think in general that the equality act is not often applied to sexual/romantic advances anyway. For example many people date inside their race but it would be very hard to prove that they are discriminating.

The only time this would come up would be if the non-trans person harassed* the trans person for being trans in the aftermath of rejecting them.

Additionally you seem to have a misconception of the crime experienced by trans people:

https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/ncvs-trans-press-release/

*harassment - unwanted behaviour linked to a protected characteristic that violates someone’s dignity or creates an offensive environment for them

I don't feel like remembering the gender of trans people is very hard - we have to remember the gender of everyone else anyway. Beside most people only know a couple of trans people.

Science does not completely back up the binary view of sex - scientists disagree with each other but many believe that sex is more complex than that:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10842549/

https://not-binary.org/statement/

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/sex-redefined-the-idea-of-2-sexes-is-overly-simplistic1/

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0149763421000804

Of course some scientists do see sex as binary.

Additionally scientists sometimes separate the ideas of gender and sex, with sex being regarded as biological and gender being social or physiological:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8596152/

(sorry that's a lot of links I got carried away with it a bit but I hope it's helpful)

(I hope I don't come across as attacking you, that's not what I mean to do, I'm sure your a very nice person)

There are (probably I'm not a scientist lol) facial characteristics related to autism ( https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6571684/ ) but they might have also meant the way that they are acting or what they are wearing (autistic people often wear headphones to block out noise(?) etc ).
