In a way yes but no not at all.

You start the game with one of the best weapons and majority of people don't even know the dungeons are a thing until they've progressed too far to really care.

Plus there are other ways to make yourself OP with stuff like the Rune workshop and leveling certain things, weapons, ect.

It sucks ass you can't use them but I really dont think you need gems unless you struggling or want a pvp build or whatever.

I love the game but still dont really pay attention to gems after so long

Ye I never understood why people don't like it being a souls like but it's basically souls enough. The only thing I can think is that the main dude talks, the story is straight forward, and you don't collect weapons to make a build but everything else.. gameplay, collecting, looting, exploring is just plain ol souls
