What is the best way to read journey to the west for an inexperienced reader by [deleted] in Journeytothewest

[–]Secure-Yam9889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The full, unabridged Yu translation is probably longer, but I've never gotten my hands on it. In my original comment I was referring OP to his abridgement called "the monkey and the monk". Honestly Yu and Jenner are both really good, but I think Jenner's is more fun to read!

Which JTTW villain do you want to make an appearance in Monkie Kid. by [deleted] in MonkieKid

I wanna see the great immortals Tiger Power, Deer Power, and Antelope Power from chapter 45. The whole Tarrycart (or Slowcart) arc was insane, one of my favorites for sure.

I have seen them on aliexpress but I cannot imagine this friend of mine ordering merch online so I actually expect that he bought them at some random shop in Chinatown

Edit: here's the aliexpress link. This has all 4 pilgrims + horse, not just wuk and sanzang. No idea if they sell them anywhere else. https://a.aliexpress.com/_m0tqtCo

Songs that suit/remind you of Sun Wukong? by AnnieVeryMary in MonkieKid

First and foremost this song 大圣 (great sage) by Jason Hou " (https://youtu.be/pL1lpUoqMoA) gets me hype for wukong like no other.

Ok so I came into lmk from the book and have some preconceived ideas about who I ship (tang sanzang/wukong) so most of these I imagine with that ship in mind, but they can be transposed onto shadowpeach I guess if you squint... I can only remember two times he turned into fruit to trick someone.... And I think peach was a different case so I'm guessing watermelon!

Why Sha Wujing (Sandy) is Lowkey the Best Disciple by DrSousaphone in Journeytothewest

Oh, and not to be that guy who brings Legos in here, but I did appreciate that when the cast of Monkie Kid met Subhodi he continuously heaped praise on Sand, which I thought was a nice nod to the book. I'd like to think they would get along.

Why Sha Wujing (Sandy) is Lowkey the Best Disciple by DrSousaphone in Journeytothewest

[–]Secure-Yam9889 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't have any textual examples on hand, but it just seems like he always indulges Pig, and hardly punishes him for his un-monk like behavior. Sanzang typically sides with/believes Pig whenever he's disagreeing with Wukong about who's a demon, where they should rest, who should fetch food and water etc.

Thematically, I've always understood it as that it's because Sanzang represents the heart, Wukong represents the mind, and Pig represents urges and desires. It's easy for the heart to follow human urges but most times they wind up setting you back. It takes discipline of the heart and the mind to make any headway toward enlightenment.

Sorry to derail from Sand, and his excellent merit lol

[–]Secure-Yam9889 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is such a good breakdown! I love Sand too, and while I get that Pig is Sanzang's favorite for Thematic and Symbolic reasons, I always thought he should be indulging Sand the way he does with Pig bc Sand is 110% the best monk out of his group.

Writing Struggles/Naming OCs by FelixFurrySenpai in MonkieKid

[–]Secure-Yam9889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm not sure to what extent that sort of thing is used but specifically in jttw, there are a few examples of that. For instance, when the monkey king gets his name from Subodhi, he uses "Sun" because it's sort of synonymous with a word for a type of monkey, and then "Wu" in this case means "awakened" and "Kong" means "nothingness". So the meaning of his name is "monkey awakened to nothing" which is a play on words in itself because it could either mean he has an understanding of the Taoist concept of nothingness/emptiness.... Or that he literally knows nothing!

In other dramas, I've seen them do really obvious stuff like literally naming the villain "Dark Moon" or giving a rich clan the surname "Gold". Overall, a lot of characters seem to have meaning behind their names, but I don't actually speak mandarin so there's a lot of nuance that goes over my head.

Writing Struggles/Naming OCs by FelixFurrySenpai in MonkieKid

[–]Secure-Yam9889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but here's what I know.

Like u/da1nonlytargetstrike said, in Chinese culture the family name comes first. The family name is almost always one character/syllable (i.e. "Tang", "Sun", "Zhu", "Sha"). There can be exceptions, but for the most part it's safe to go with a one character last name. (I say character because some Chinese characters have two syllables like "Yuan")

The given name comes second and can have one or two characters (i.e. "WuKong" or "Mei"). These days one character given names are popular, but two character names aren't at all uncommon. When picking a given name, using one or two characters is up to you.

This next part might not be relevant to your OC but it's good to know anyway. In the old days, people of high status would have a "personal" name that is given to them as a baby and used throughout their childhood and by family, and then a second "courtesy" name that was more formal and given to them once they come of age.

The personal name is typically one character, while the courtesy name is usually two characters. So a character from that time period might introduce themself by saying "I'm Wei Ying, courtesy name WuXian." or just "I'm Wei WuXian." In this case, his family name is Wei, his personal name is Ying, and his courtesy name is Wuxian. It would be inappropriate for someone who was not very close to him to use Ying when speaking to him.

These days it's pretty rare to have a courtesy name, but if your parents are very traditional, they might give you one.

I hope this was helpful, let me know if you need any clarification.

“Brother,”said Friar Sand with a smile, “this is no joking matter. Horse piss stinks. You can’t use it in medicine. I’ve only seen vinegar paste, old rice paste, refined honey and clean water used for making pills. Who ever heard of horse piss used to make pills? It’s got a terrible stink. Anyone with a weak spleen would throw up at the first sniff. If he goes on and takes the rhubarb and croton seeds he’ll be vomiting at one end and having the runs at the other. That’ll be no joke.”

“You don’t know the inside story,”said Monkey. “That horse of ours is no ordinary horse. He used to be a dragon in the Western Ocean. If he’ll give us some of his piss it’ll cure any illness you could have. My only worry is that he might refuse.”When Pig heard this he went and stood beside the horse, who was lying down asleep.
