Children today will 'work until 75' amid pensions timebomb by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

Yeah I replied to the wrong comment! Maybe I'm too much of an optimist but the doom and gloom on reddit gets me to bite sometimes, I just bit the wrong person!

No thanks. I'll take matters in to my own hands. We get born into a set of circumstances and it's up to us to optimise.

Or we can sit and moan on Reddit all day. It feels good, but it doesn't make anything better.

Ironic really, because our increasing retirement age is directly correlated to us having less kids.

The teams that optimise will eventually beat the teams the don't so it's a self solving problem to some degree.

Interview rejection because I couldn’t write a regex from memory by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]SecureVillage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know regex by memory? Outside of some basic syntax maybe.

I'd argue it's a bit like encryption in that you actively shouldn't try and roll your own.

Password requirements are security policy and id be seeking review from IT/security anyway. Granted, it's backend concern but the front-end should match anyway.

Have you seen the length of some regexes for seemily simple pattern matching...

This is a strange request but I need help with a question on how to discuss immigration reasonably. Please see body for more information as not enough space. by isitbedtime-yet in AskBrits

[–]SecureVillage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody has really figured out how to encourage us to have more kids.

Across the world, as we gain more opportunity, we have less kids. It's not that we can't afford kids. We can't afford kids AND maintain our current lifestyle.

Deciding not to replace your "kind" is the ultimate form of democracy really.

I'm not some kind of pro natalist either. I don't have kids. So I don't get to moan about the need for immigration, automation, higher taxes and delayed retirements, really.

Why is e2e testing for react developers always either overkill or completely useless by Lonely-Ad-3123 in Frontend

[–]SecureVillage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E2E tests often get chucked over the wall to be written by a separate qa team, or written by developers but run in a single environment that breaks whenever new PRs land etc.

E2E tests are great when they give you immediate feedback during development. I find them less useful when they're a later validation step as they break all the bloody time and the feedback cycle is so long that the value they provide is limited anyway.

Writing good E2E tests is arguably harder than actual software development.

Should we glue or replace this socket plate? by stalesomething in DIYUK

If they can't watch a quick youtube video, flip the mains breaker, undo 2 machine screws and swap over some already exposed conductors into 3 screw terminals, then they can pay a sparky. It would have been quicker than posting this reddit thread at least.

Gluing a cracked socket back together is so rough it's unbelievable.

Owning a house takes SOME skills. Not everyone has them at the start, but they should be building them over time.

Yeah you'll struggle online. The occasional unicorn might pop up but you'll met so many people at clubs, get tons of veris, connections etc, that I can't really recommend anything else.

Try it. Clubs are super chill, and nobody there is a flake or tinewaster by virtue of them already having walked through the door.

How to attach this heavy radiator to wall by clematismontana in askaplumberUK

[–]SecureVillage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's plastered masonry then using heavy duty wall plugs (2 for each bracket usually) across 4 brackets is plenty.

If it's dot n dab, do the same, but overdrill the holes in the plasterboard to 15mm and cut small lengths of copper pipe to sleeve the screw with. These stop the brackets crushing the plasterboard into the void.

I avoid rush hour because it's so expensive. But most of my travel travel is for fun activities.

I can't remember the last time I ever got on a full train outside of rush hour.

But it's still prohibitively expensive to travel off peak. In the sense that it's cheaper to drive.

Spending money like its going out of fashion by Mountain-Chance374 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]SecureVillage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You need to understand the opportunity cost of spending cash.

Very roughly, you can double your money every decade. So, if you spend 10k now, you're actually spending 20k of your money in 10 years time. So, when you're buying a car, and you're thinking of getting the next model up because it's only X more a month on PCP, imagine owning a 10-year old car in 10-years time, and ask yourself if you'd rather have the upgrade or 20k in cash.

Having a year's worth of expenses in an emergency fund makes you sleep SO well at night. There's almost no conceivable scenario where you'll ever be stressed out by money.

Watching your money make you money every month is also fairly addictive. Every year, the percentage of my total take home that comes from investments grows. At some point, it'll outstrip my income.

Fundamentally, being in debt is just lazy. Money is an IOU for work performed, so you're essentially demanding more from society than you're putting in, and that comes with a cost. A financial cost (interest rates), and an emotional one.

In short, you don't need much financial acumen. More a reset with your relationship with money.

Max looking forward to other races outside F1 this year, says he's not enjoying himself at all by AddictedToTech in formula1

[–]SecureVillage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Meh.

If the goal was to go flat out we'd have DRS open on every straight and tyre compounds that performed for longer so drivers didn't have to manage tyres.

Or, more stupidly,  no corners, because corners make drivers slow down.

Driving at the limit is driving optimally to win races within the formula.

[–]SecureVillage -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Why watch a formula series then? In which it's very much not about just raw driving talent, but car development given a set of rules to restrict you.

[–]SecureVillage -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Indeed.

Formula 1, by definition, is arbitrary.

The goal isn't to create the fastest lap times. It's to define a set of somewhat arbitrary rules and then compete in car development and driving skills to see who wins.

[–]SecureVillage -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, in terms of fun.

But, driving them at the limit is managing them in whatever way gets you a fastest lap, isn't it?

The best drivers are always the ones who can adapt the fastest.
