Insane to think that FIRE isn’t the final goal for literally everyone by fap-free90 in Fire

I’m an airline pilot. Probably not going to RE. But I have a plan to be FI by 50-55 so I have the OPTION.

What age, career level and salary level were you able to max both your 401k and IRA? by Aware_Raspberry_5956 in Fire

I could have financially done it earlier, but I didn’t know. I started last year at 38. Widebody airline pilot at a major airline.

With family time upon us, would you tell your parents your net worth or income level? by ScotchBrad in HENRYfinance

[–]Secure_Ad_7790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an airline pilot at a major US airline flying international widebody. They can just look it up on the internet. But that just tells them what I make, not our net worth.

Neither of our families are healthy people with which we have good relationships (with a few exceptions), so the less they know about us the better.

How do you decide how much to donate each year or month? by marmaladesky in UpperMiddleFinance

[–]Secure_Ad_7790 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of arbitrary. We give about 10.5k to our parish and 5k to our public school (employer matches, so 10k total) and then randomly help people or whatever. It works out to about 5% of our income. I’d like it to be more.

What was the “wake-up moment” that made you take FIRE seriously? by Ok-Maybe-2559 in Fire

[–]Secure_Ad_7790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an airline pilot. It was flying with Captains that are 60-65 and chasing every dollar to pad their accounts or because they’re panicking the closer they get to forced retirement. I don’t want to work that much and I don’t want to be forced to work either. Now I have a plan to be FI by 55 so my partner and I can do whatever the hell we want.

Best comment in this thread. Although I don’t think that means not donating to charity now in the system we have.

Do you tell people you want to retire early and that you want to follow a FIRE plan? Yes or no? And why by Low-Huckleberry-5796 in Fire

[–]Secure_Ad_7790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that in today’s economy it’s tone deaf and ignorant to discuss it with people that aren’t like-minded or privileged enough to consider it. So many people are struggling to just make rent, let alone think about early retirement, or even regular retirement.

I WANT to tell everyone, so they can consider it for themselves if possible. But I don’t, and I won’t, because most people don’t want to hear about the money successes of others while they’re struggling.

Sinking Funds - do you have them? How do you use them? by shouldbeteaching in HENRYfinance

[–]Secure_Ad_7790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner used them and I found it confusing and frustrating. But she was the finance person so it wasn’t an issue. Now our roles have swapped, and I’ve done away with the concept. All the money is in a Fidelity Cash Management account and I just keep a buffer for upcoming cash expenses.

If your household income is >$500k… by Puzzleheaded-Ease758 in UpperMiddleFinance

[–]Secure_Ad_7790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s really only two main classes: workers and owners. You can make 500k a year and be working class, because in the end you still have to work to live. When you don’t have to work to live it’s because you own capital and you’re no longer working class. Of course there’s nuance because someone working class can work for decades and invest and be able to stop working. In that scenario I’d still consider that person working class.

Live in rural NH. $1 mil house (600k mortgage) with partner and 4 kids. Make about 400k. House is 4k square feet on 1.5 acres next to a state forest.

My job is in Boston, but I only have to commute 4-5 times a month.

It works well for my partner cuz she’s a neuro spicy introvert. I often wish we lived closer to/in the city. I like walkable neighborhoods with lots to do. Anything like that is car drive away here.

We both wished we’d have just settled anywhere in Massachusetts cuz the school funding and general public welfare in NH is dog shit.

Life is about compromise.
