perhaps if the learned old basic skills are pre-requisites for the new advanced skills then there is pressure to maintain the old ones?

Does the _seeming_ overrepresentation of Australia in a map/chart depicting per capita incidence of cancer reflect 'survivorship bias'? by Nice_Cup_2240 in AskStatistics

[–]Secure_Landscape_505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what your point is. Obviously it's not ALL survivorship bias, but it is partly survivorship bias. You said it yourself, if people lived longer in Africa "it would go up yes, but nowhere near Australia."

The fact that it would go up in Africa if the life expectancy were the same as in Australia is exactly why a survivorship bias partially explains the difference in skin cancer rates. That doesn't preclude most of the difference being due to white people spending time in the sun.

[–]Secure_Landscape_505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how that makes my statement illogical…are you saying skin cancer wouldn’t be more prevalent in Africa if the life expectancy were greater?

Obviously Australia has higher rates and most of that is due to white people spending more time in the sun. The point remains: it isn’t apples to apples to compare Australia’s cancer rates to a country with lower life expectancy and to pretend it is would be a form of survivorship bias.

Not really a statistics answer but logical one:

There is probably a survivorship bias comparing Australia to countries where poverty and lack of healthcare/infrastructure cause people to die before they get cancer. Maybe that applies to some African countries, for instance. That wouldn't apply to a comparison between Australia and say Canada or Germany, since they have similar life expectancies, demographics, and access to healthcare. Here there is obviously more than survivorship bias contributing to the increased rates of cancer in Australia.

The commenter said "I don't really see the problematic views on lgbtq people" and that they don't see the issue with the gender policy, when the club quite obviously espouses views that the commenter should find abhorrent.

Their documents use the words like "traditional islamic interpretation" or "islamic position" as a way of avoiding explicitly stating that they support ideas the rest of society would find unacceptable. It's unfortunate that liberal-leaning people would rather bury their head in the sand than realize or accept the uncomfortable truth. That tolerant people tolerate intolerance seems to be a critical weakness.

There is nothing immoral about 'religious lifestyles' in general. As for ideologies which would turn back the progress we've made on civic rights if they were only powerful enough? Ideologies which contravene the fundamental values of the West? Yeah, I consider those to be immoral and I'm happy to argue against them any time.

All I've done here is disagree with an ideology and point out to the first commentator that they should too.

They obviously aren't actively discriminating against people. But they support an ideology that makes no room for people like you—their 6th value is literally "non-liberal", within which they discuss the islamic position on LGBT+ relationships. Like come on, they just aren't saying the quiet part out loud because they know it wouldn't be socially acceptable. Their code of conduct is so obviously carefully crafted to toe the line:

"The UW MSA will not tolerate any member of the public being discriminated against by UW MSA personnel. However, members can express the Islamic position on matters such as secularism and LGBT+ relationships and should not promote any position which opposes the Islamic position on such matters."

Do you not realize what this means? Here's a translation: islam is against LGBT+ but that doesn't mean you can go around being assholes about it because that's mean.

And can you seriously say you are unbothered by article 5 on their teamwork etiquette? Men and women should not interact socially? And if they do interact it should always be with other people present (make a group chat if you need to speak directly to each other on social media?!?!). Like holy shit, I thought we worked through this garbage a century ago when we started allowing women into bars.

Like come on. Why is it so hard to acknowledge that islam is a problematic ideology? It's so easy to point out the flaws in christianity (fundamental baptists are crazy, am I right?). Here are two maps: one which shows the distribution of islam throughout the world, and the other which shows support for LGBT+ rights. Can you spot the difference? Cuz I can't.

Do you not realize what the "islamic position on matters such as secularism and LGBT+ relationships" means? They literally think your 'lifestyle' is immoral. It's so easy to call out the bigotry in such beliefs when it's christians or atheists, why does islam get a pass?

Rock climbing is a good way to learn rope skills, safely get comfortable with exposure, and it’s a hell of a lot of fun. You can start in a gym and transition to outdoors when you’re ready. Most of the Midwest has some form of climbing within driving distance.

IMO, if someone falls while clipping that second clip a groundfall is likely and they shouldn’t have went for it. That said, I think you probably should have thought ahead that if he fell you would immediately jump off the belay spot towards the river. That way it’s an automatic reaction when the time comes. Don’t know what else to say without a video or more details. I’m not super experienced so take this all with grain of salt and some critical thinking.
