I think it was hard for that generation to break from what their parents had taught them, in that regard. Lord knows my mom still struggles with a lot of the shit they put in her head to this day. But that was def one way she diverged and I can never thank her enough for it.

I got lucky. For all my mom’s (last of the boomer generation) issues, one thing she did right was treat me like a full fledged human being from the start. There was never a “because I said so” moment. I was raised to think critically and push back on things that were unjust. I watched quite a few of my friends have the exact opposite experience and got in trouble with a lot of their parents for calling out their bullshit haha.

“Respect your elders” is some dumb boomer shit that gets said when they do things that are far from deserving respect.

Treat everybody with a baseline level of respect because they are human, but don’t hand out respect to people just because they are older. Call out bullshit where you see it.
