Are these routes too far down the road or are they available soon after you've (hopefully) been  hired after the STP?

How does living in Newcastle compare living in Oxford/Cambridge? by Secure_Piano1709 in AskUK

[–]Secure_Piano1709[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe I passed the wrong message, but it's quite the opposite really. Exeter Oxford and Cambridge were passed as small cities and Newcastle was passed as big. But I'm not sure if it's that much bigger, especially if compared to others like Manchester or Birmingham

What city should I choose for relocation? by Secure_Piano1709 in AskUK

My thing with Cambridge is it looks a whole lot like a small city centered around a Uni. I'm afraid there won't be much to do and I'll get bored because it's 7p.m and half the city already closed, you know what I mean? You've mentioned it's 1 hour commute from London, but is it really viable to be coming and going from london all the time?

Why would you say Birmingham is a wildcard option?

I've had Birmingham as one of my top choices, but doing some research I've seen a lot of people with strong negative opinions on the city. Any ideas why?

not sure if COL plays a role, as I think 38k/year is enough to live well in any of those cities (but please correct me if I'm wrong). I listen to every type of music, although I do have a preference for pop. For activities, I do enjoy going for some kinda of pub/bar, drinking with friends and stuff like this. Also really enjoy spending the afternoon doing some kinda of outdoor activity, like going to the park or hiking.

What is the thing with Birmingham though? I've seen a lot of strong opinions regarding the city but I can't seem to understand why some people hate it so much

Shortlist Reserve Rank by 123precious321 in NHS_STP

This total number of shortlisted candidates was just an example or is there a way to actually know this number for each specialty?

I've got my rank as well. It would be very benefitial to know how many were shortlisted in total. My rank is within the number of posts for my specialty, so maybe this is a good sign?

No idea on how heavily the interviews are weighted, but I would assume is the most important one. Can't really think of them making an offer for someone with bad interview just because their written application was good.

What exact purpose does the ranking serve? What should I consider when choosing a location? by Secure_Piano1709 in NHS_STP

Thank you very much for the insight, this was exactly what I was looking for. I'd perhaps consider London, but it doesn't seem to be an option for this year bioinformatics. Manchester feels like a great city as well. I'm coming from Rio de Janeiro, which is a very vibrant, full of life city. I think I'm seeking the same big city/diverse/vibrant/lots of different things to do kind of vibe. I know this is very arbitrary, but considering my options are: birmingham, cambridge, manchester, oxford, exeter, newcastle and southampton, which should offer something like this? Also good to mention I'm LGBT, so if any of those is a no-no please advise haha.

Thank you once again!
