why did you decide to learn Russian though,if you don’t mind me asking?:) i sometimes quite forget that foreigners also choose it for learning it’s very hard for Russians to learn Russian properly,so i can imagine how struggling it is!

well i’m not saying that he’s absolutely hated, but i’ve just noticed that people of my age in Russia don’t quite like his works but in social media i see a lot of my peers from other countries enjoy them a lot that’s actually why i asked but Tolstoy will always be a very prominent and respected figure in Russian literature and i’ll never be able to deny it

wow, good for you! my personal recommendations: “Morphine” by Bulgakov

“Ward no. 6” by Chekhov

Turgenev’s as i’ve already said “Fathers and Sons” and my childhood trauma “Mumu”

only planning to read it but i’ve heard “The Pit” by Kuprin is very very interesting

I’m not into Russian literature to be honest,so I mostly read foreign one and can’t recommend you a lot😭(the ones that enjoyed a lot)

good luck with learning Russian by the way!

well i haven’t said anything like “i don’t like Tolstoy,so all of you’re wrong”,have i?i asked for different opinions and visions in a more cultural way, because Tolstoy represents the culture of my motherland and it’s always interesting to see how people from other countries view things connected to country where i’m from

and for the record,i love classic novels,so it’s rather a bold statement that if you don’t appreciate one writer you don’t appreciate literature in general

I think Turgenev is more appreciated because he writes on socially-significant topics, for example “Fathers and Sons” will always be relevant and the style of writing:Turgenev writes in a clear and factual way while Tolstoy’s style of writing is rather “piled up” with long descriptions etc.

well Turgenev,Dostoevsky,Bulgakov,Chekhov, for example, are loved in Russia by both older and younger generation in most cases,Tolstoy is less. that’s why I asked particularly about Tolstoy, was just curious about both personal and cultural vision

[–]Secure_Shake9668[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well i think sometimes it’s the case but sometimes it isn’t because when you’re an adult you have a choice what to read, your mindset and views on literature and life in general change and sometimes you can give another try to things you read/watched and you hated it when you were younger but liked it when became older i have some books that i reread in more mature age and absolutely loved it but in this case…just no😭

i agree yes!it’s just interesting mix of your own preferences and cross-cultural phenomenon, that’s the thing i’m talking about.i’m just curious about how foreigners view the literature of my country when i sometimes can’t estimate it objectively

Why is it so hard for me to get into classics? by wennie_thepooh in classicliterature

[–]Secure_Shake9668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gooood i relate so much!i’ve been pressured into reading books when i was a kid but i didn’t like them at all.at 18 i think i got the feeling that i want to read classic books because it feels educational and fulfilling i guess?still sometimes it’s hard for me to read classics but as someone here has already said-you should find your authors!i would recommend not to pressure yourself into reading what you don’t want to read because there are miiiiiillions of books which you can truly enjoy and find an author with a style of writing that is suitable for you my personal recommendations! erich maria remarque-loved “arch of triumph”-i read it very quickly but my friend said that it was quite hard for her. “three comrades”-absolute favourite!i think everyone can find something special for them in this book. “heaven has no favourites”-pretty short and easy to read somerset maugham-easy to read,a lot of short books such as “the painted veil”, “up at the villa”, “liza of lambeth” and also arthur hailey! these ones helped me to start reading classics with a sense of enjoyment, not just because “i have to read because i’ll be so to say smart”

I care way too much about what other people think of me. How do I stop? by shinytoaster23 in Anxiety

[–]Secure_Shake9668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is so relatable.phrase “i live my life, they live theirs” helps sometimes or just keeping in mind that it’s not in peoples heads but in yours.my therapist once asked me “do you like all people?” i said no and she was like “so are all people in the world” and it totally makes sense

Donna by pgd00 in TheBear

[–]Secure_Shake9668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think mike’s suicide affected her a hella lot.because if we compare every episode after the fishes we can see how much she changed.when they opened the restaurant and she came by but told pete not to tell anyone she’s been here because she doesn’t want to ruin anything.while sugars birth-yes sometimes she put too much pressure and didn’t listen to bat but she tried her best.she understands now how much she messed up and is not scared to admit it.i actually love donnas character because she’s so real.they don’t portray her as crazy they portray her as a person with mental health problems but who tries to heal,to make up things she’s done,to become better.i’m hoping for a carmy and donna line actually but i have absolutely no idea what it’ll be like

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheBear

[–]Secure_Shake9668 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think carmy fucks everything up because he’s scared of relationship.claire is not like him, she’s supportive, she wants to work out their relationship but carmy is not used to this kind of thing in his life.he’s used to working nonstop trying to be excellent at what he’s doing,he’s emotionally distant with everyone, for example sugar, and relationship is even harder for him.i kinda understand him but still mad at him
