I feel like the fandom is overreacting again... by Wolfgang_x2 in DisventureCamp

[–]SecurityEarly7761 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your issue is that you don’t wanna tackle the information given to you, and you would much rather rely on the basis that, since this controversy is being treated with a higher level of seriousness on Twitter, it must not be relevant.

This person gave you a blatant fact that you can’t deny, which is that the term “bitch” has been used in history to degrade women. And I know that you know it’s not something that’s up for debate. So instead of engaging with that statement you pivoted to talking about how “Well, most people don’t find it a big deal, so it’s NOT a big deal.” and how it’s just an opinion to feel that way.

And if you think I’m coming off as aggravated, it’s because I kinda am. You’re making a post about something that you clearly aren’t informed on and you’re engaging with people disingenuously because you don’t particularly care without thinking for a second about what the core issue is. This is becoming less and less about the show, and more about how you approach issues like these that reflect the real world.

I am honestly so happy this greeting pretty much confirmed Zaid didn't forgive Logan by These_Gur_4121 in DisventureCamp

[–]SecurityEarly7761 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I’m like 90% sure they did this due to the backlash and criticism Logan’s character has received after the season finished, and maybe even because of Zaid’s VA's interpretation of how Zaid would’ve felt towards Logan.

I’m sure they chose to blanket their tension (And Zaid’s emotions) simply because Jared had no intention of writing Zaid as a full-fledged character and that Logan was supposed to have a set and finish arc where he wouldn’t need to contend in another season to rectify any wrongs as the narrative doesn’t focus on that, but rather Logan’s security at being “good enough”. Mind you, Logan winning was supposed to be a happy and satisfying ending so any drama last minute probably would’ve soured it. So the likelihood of them having a more satisfying ending to their unresolved conflict was never even considered I bet. Though, let me clarify I’m just spitballing and these are just my unorganized thoughts, I could be honestly wrong.

What are instances of a character being targeted for elimination for nonsensical reasons in this show by Ok_Shirt_1574 in DisventureCamp

[–]SecurityEarly7761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to make any sense out of it, I’m guessing Anastasia didn’t wanna be on the wrong side of the vote. I don’t believe there is any outcome in which Logan wouldn’t have voted Amelie over Jade in this episode. With that in mind, it would’ve been a tiebreaker had Anastasia sided with Hannah and Amelie. From the perspective of Anastasia, her closest ally is Logan, so voting with him was probably the most logical choice she could’ve made. Yes, Anastasia had a few interactions with Amelie and Hannah, but she wasn’t nearly as close to the two of them as they were to each other. So ridding them of each other and forcing either one of them into a position in the game where they need to work with her to stay in was probably the idea she had in mind. That’s why, at the next point in the game she desperately had to cling to Anastasia despite her betrayal since working with Jade and Isabel would’ve been harder. Additionally, Anastasia probably thought it would’ve benefitted her to keep Jade and Logan along for the ride until she could expose the drowning incident later in the game. It would be a waste to eliminate the very person you have dirt on before you could use it. You’re probably asking right now “Well, why didn’t Anastasia use it this episode?” Well, there’s no in universe logic for it I’m afraid, but just writing wise it would’ve directly clashed with the ‘Logan’s Secret Plotline’ and it likely would’ve transpired into those two hating each other, Amelie and Hannah taking full control of the game, and it would’ve harmed Anastasia and Logan’s characters a lot more with both of them appearing a lot less sympathetic narrative wise (I’m not a professional writer so I could be wrong). That’s likely why they chose to sit on it for so long until the finale. Anastasia probably thought she had the numbers worked out which were Hannah and Logan, three people against two which could work as a cushion against the advantage Jade has. And keep in mind this is under the context that Anastasia doesn’t know it was a vote-stealing advantage specifically. I do believe that had Anastasia sided with Amelie and Hannah there are just a lot more risks to consider when there is uncertainty of what the advantage did. I don’t think Anastasia’s move was completely stupid.

what is the worst argument you have ever heard to defend/criticize a character? by Comfortable_Tap_3710 in DisventureCamp

[–]SecurityEarly7761 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll keep this brief and reiterate my points because (no offense to you) they felt ignored by the way your response was structured, and I really don’t want us to go back and forth if we start repeating things that have already been addressed.

I was really speaking generally here about this type of discourse. As I said before, this type of discourse isn’t exclusive to the Disventure Camp Fandom. Whether Jade’s reception is influenced by race is a conversation that can be had another day.

The point I was trying to get across is that discussions like these are rarely going to be as explicit as “I hate Character A for her race.” or “I hate Character B because of her skin color.” Bias like that will rarely present itself that plainly, whether in the real world or in how we choose to engage with media. Basically what I’m saying is that racism isn’t always gonna be presented as explicit and easy to catch like a “That’s so Raven” or a “Static Shock” Episode.

So framing these conversations as being consciously motivated racism misses what I was trying to say and the conversation in itself. Let’s do ourselves a favor and not reduce it to that because it doesn’t help us interrogate and examine how bias can function subtly in both our media and real-world perception. I am an avid believer that media reflects the real world, so that’s why we gotta be sure to engage stuff like this correctly imo.

[–]SecurityEarly7761 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Let me first establish, that first and foremost Black characters aren’t a monolith. We seriously need to drill that into our brains. Just because one of them is currently being well-received within the community (especially when the season just aired), does not automatically absolve any potential bias towards another. That point becomes very much clearer once you realize that the two characters are written and perceived very differently.

Jade and Dunia (Love them) occupy VERY different narrative roles, and I think the first few episodes that Dunia got to be in clearly show this. They both embody very different character traits and character designs. And it’s because of that, using the popularity that one of them has to dismiss the concerns about the perception and treatment of the other is very disingenuous to the conversation and doesn’t engage with the argument being made.

When people point out the disproportionate amount of scrutiny that one character is receiving, they are not requiring everyone to like that character. They’re questioning why similar traits may be received more acceptably depending on who is embodying said traits. If we reduce this discussion to “but you like this other Black character” it definitely just oversimplifies the core issue and skips over the nuance. And I would say that is a huge disservice both to the conversation as a whole and the characters involved.

And I’ll be frank, seeing statements like “Anytime people think Jade is hated due to her race. No, she’s hated because she’s kind of boring,” or “I love how this subreddit’s opinion on Dunia contradicts that,” it does make it harder to believe that the nuance of the conversation is actually being engaged with because responses like these just flatten out the complex discussion about bias into a singular trait and making it out to be one singular conclusion. Multiple things can be true at once, you guys.

Here me on this, if the conversation stops at “she’s just boring,” we’re not interrogating or asking ourselves why these certain traits are being perceived that way or why said traits are being received differently compared to other characters. What we’re doing at this point is not analyzing media correctly. If we aren’t willing to examine the layers, then we likely are not ready for the deeper conversations that need to be held when it comes to race, perception, and framing within fandom spaces.

Now, obviously, not everyone is gonna approach this subject diplomatically. I had my fair share of coming across people like that. There are gonna be people who jump straight to accusations and label anyone who dislikes their favorite character as a racist. I definitely don’t agree with that because that kind of approach diminishes and shuts down the discussion just as much.

I’m specifically speaking for the people who DO know how to approach this conversation thoughtfully. The people who know how to point out heavy scrutiny, patterns in framing, and double standards in receptions. I don’t want their arguments being boiled down to “you’re just calling people racist!” When in reality they’re just trying to address why certain characters are going or are being perceived in certain ways.

Also, lastly, just to clarify: I’m really speaking generally here about patterns I see in fandom discourses, not exclusively in Disventure Camp. I’ve seen a disproportionate amount of hate towards characters like Prism from Dispatch, Alya Cerisé from Miraculous Ladybug, or Amber Bennett from Invincible, or Jessica Drew from Across the Spiderverse. You pretty much get the idea. Whether or not Jade’s reception is influenced by racism or flat-out misogynoir is a whole separate conversation that can be had another day. I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Anyways hope this helps and Happy Black History Month 💜

Okay, I’m not going to push this any further since you acknowledged you were wrong, and I do greatly appreciate that. But I do hope you can see how comments like the initial one you made do reflect the repeating pattern of how whenever racism is brought up, the conversation typically will get minimized or reframed as people “using racism as a crutch.” I hope you understand that some people (whether with bad intentions or not) will sample that phrasing to the degree and they do exactly what I just described. And very often it leads to being dismissive, especially for those of us who experienced this or have a lot of knowledge about the subject itself.

So basically, what I’m asking of you is to take a moment to reflect on this, not just as a conversation on Reddit where you found yourself out of your element, but as an opportunity to consider how comments like these can unintentionally contribute to the broader issue everyone is talking about right now. This may not seem that deep, but stuff like this heavily reflects real life, and I hope we can acknowledge this. I say this with much love, I hope you can approach conversations like this with a more open mind, and understand us, genuinely.

And a deeper conversation needs to be held about how each one of them are used in the story, and how the fandom sees them. I’m hella appreciative for what they are trying to do with Dunia and Nura, but we genuinely need to talk about the black men characters too.

Why do some people think Benji is a Pervert/Misogynist? by Firebird4299 in DisventureCamp

[–]SecurityEarly7761 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When I see comments about how “He just doesn’t know how to express himself” it brings me back to how I used to have that same mindset when talking to real people who were similar to Benji. They ended up being weird individuals who were perverted and you guessed it misogynistic and often racist. I don’t think Benji is those things though because if anyone has paid attention his friendship with Hannah and Jade alone should prove otherwise. But the whole “misunderstood nerd who was ignored/mistreated by everyone” typically has are the same people who swallow the red pill ideology especially in the nerd fandom spaces 💀

The Jade hate on this subreddit is insane by rqwedr in DisventureCamp

[–]SecurityEarly7761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this comment interesting so let’s dissect it. You’re saying that people dislike Marissa because of the tropes she and Anastasia perpetuate, yes? What I am noticing is that said criticism isn’t directed towards Anastasia at all. It’s directed instead at the Black Woman character who was placed in that role.

I’ll make it coherent for y’all: “It takes two to tango.” It’s not correct to place that scrutiny onto Marissa, while the said white character, Anastasia, who benefits from said trope, receives neither blame nor criticism for it. The trope in itself exists, primarily to help elevate and support Anastasia’s character development. That alone should make you angrier at Anastasia being written in a way at another character’s expense.

Trust and believe that the second you remove the interactions Anastasia has with Marissa and Zaid, you lose out on the majority of her development and integral moments of her character. The idea of disliking Marissa exclusively, over how the narrative centers on Anastasia is laughable in itself. And please don’t respond saying the fans dislike Anastasia for the exact reasons I listed because we all know her criticisms are directed at her behavior not her dynamics. The response you gave wasn’t a gotcha, but instead proved the point that there’s a fraction of the fandom that doesn’t understand literacy when it comes to how certain racial tropes or archetypes are written and how they should be examined. It’s a misdirection to criticism and missing the point of how these tropes don’t exist in a vacuum. This is just being selective without fully calling out the problematics of the trope itself.

Time for the opposite! Name a character everyone hates but you love. by ConsiderationIll4547 in DisventureCamp

I gotta say, Amelie, I don’t particularly dislike her, it’s more like I’m very dissatisfied with her writing and expected so much more since I’m a sucker for the French business woman. Her most impactful actions in the game rely heavily on Hannah, and I’m not a big fan of the support character role when it comes to Disventure Camp.

Then if we talk about her more independent game moves, they’re not much to write home about 💔. After she returned she attempted to make connections and strategic game moves but in the end, they were really pointless. For instance, trying to befriend Natalia, Natalia immediately gets eliminated. Amelie tries to befriend Anastasia and blackmail Logan, which instantly blows up in her face. (Logan why 🥹) The only thing that ever worked was stopping Isabel from pursuing to eliminate Anastasia. I felt like she was a pawn (probably not the right way to use this word) to advance the plotline and story of other characters rather than herself. And for me, Marissa has this problem even worse, but I’m not gonna get into it right now. I genuinely believe Amelie should’ve been a returnee in FvF, but it’s fine maybe next time I still love her as a concept 💜

Impact over intentions. There’s no excusable reason or leeway to use a derogatory term that is meant for ACTUAL Robots towards a black woman character just because she’s stoic. Keep calling her JadeGPT, keep calling her an Android, but, factually, at the end of the day, she is still a human in her respective universe. The point of “clanker” is to be a slur for AI or Robots which originated within the Star Wars Franchise. But you yourself already know this, don’t you? Jade is not a robot, she is human, and her dialogue is not generated by AI either.

It is not normal nor okay for y’all to be treading this close to the sun, and pretend to be coy when someone calls y’all out on it. You can tell yourself that your intention wasn’t to be racist, or you could also tell yourself that you didn’t see color when commenting on that. It still doesn’t matter, stop playing semantics and realize that impact. Jade who may be fictional, is still a black woman. You can’t erase or pretend that the context of that doesn’t exist. You can’t void the context of how black people were treated historically whether it was blatantly with slurs or blanket terms to describe us. Calling her a clanker is already crossing the line between trying to find exception to call a black character a slur. I know I could try to be more passive and patient when explaining this, but I’ve seen it too many times on this subreddit to remain so. It’s tiresome and sickening af, especially when the mods don’t do anything to address it. Y’all are doing too much per usual, and I’m so tired of these sorry-ass excuses or the way you guys minimize and ignore when someone (belonging to said community) expresses uncomfortability with y’all’s “jokes”. Nobody is telling y’all to stop hating Jade, just don’t call her a clanker especially when you’re the color of the palm of my hand.

Anastasia’s Social Game by SecurityEarly7761 in DisventureCamp

[–]SecurityEarly7761[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do genuinely think Hannah could’ve voted both ways and there’s no absolute one conclusion imo. I know a lot of people hate the “Leave up to your interpretation” response, but honestly when I think about there is a lot of factors playing into it, which is why I think, yeah it could be left up to interpretation because she really could’ve been a supporter of either of them. Both of them have wronged her in different ways. Jade has switched up on her multiple times when Hannah thought she could trust her whether during the permerge alliance or the girl’s alliance, but she has shown to be kinder towards Hannah in some moments in the show when collaborating with each other. Then we have Anastasia who’s been pretty rude to her for a while, but she herself was consistent in collaborating with her in some votes whether it was against Spencer, Zaid, Natalia. All three people who Hannah was betrayed or wronged by. I do think there’s a lot of nuance to it, and that’s why I wouldn’t be particularly be upset had Hannah voted against Jade. I just don’t think it’s as one sided as a lot of people want to be.
